Probably been said before, but! I got to the last chapter, and I think I’m missing characters, some of my supports are missing a Thief and a Cavalier?

The cavalier is most likely Fernand, while the thief is either Jesse or Acantha as they are the only playable thieves in the game

Edit: Fernand will never stay in the army from my knowledge, so he will stay unsupported. Acantha is recruited by Silque in the thief shrine when you first go there and Jesse is in a cell on Celica’s route

I never tried Gaiden or Sov so this hackrom was my opportunity to try as close as possible, and if the official deliveries are like that, then I am looking at one of the best Fire Emblem ever made.

This demake is art, the best Gba demake I have ever tried. The mechanics and portraits are incredible, my only complaint is that after completing the game there is not much to do… But leaving that aside, this demake is a work of art, I hope that in the future they continue to come out with FE demakes that are at this level.

I appreciate that it has a translation into Spanish and Chinese, to reach a much larger audience.

Does anyone have an old version? Perhaps 0.9? I’m interested in seeing how they handled the intro for the ā€œHeroā€ anims before they added Nura’s Myrmidon.

I think I may have it. If you want I could give it to you later, but at least I can describe how it looked. Basically it’s a major re-sprite of Hector’s class in FE7, only with a shield, a different head sprite (one that has a bandana) and obviously using a sword instead.

This is correct. I also do not believe intro anims existed at that point, so none were made.

I started playing the game earlier, but despite saving, and seeing save files in the folder, I don’t have the option to continue my playthrough. Is there a known fix/work around?

Update: Upon trying again, it worked. No idea why my saves failed to work but now I’m also using save states in addition to the in-game save over somewhat justified paranoia.

Japanese version please

I played from start to finish. It was really good! It’s on par with an official GBA FE, and I’m impressed and in awe of the work and effort put into it! My only complaint is that it’s a demake, so I might as well play SOV instead. On the other hand, I’d love to see FE4 remade in this way, it would be magnificent! Thanks for this hack.

Just finished this game. This demake is awesome! Shoutouts to Clair and Est being Anit-Mogall support, but-

Complaints

The player archers suck and
SCREW THAT CELICA EARTHQUAKE MAP I HATE IT SO FREAKING MUCHHHHHH

Other than that, fantastic!

Genuinely curious, what happened for them to suck for you? I haven’t finished yet but I’m only a few chapters from the end and both Python and Leon have been pretty good for most of my playtime (I didn’t make any of my villagers archers). Their damage wasn’t the best, but the Radiant and Holy Bows help them have do enough against a lot of threats by either targeting Res or having terror effectiveness, respectively. Also the insane range and mobility once they hit bow knight is really useful imo, plus at bare minimum they’re at least good as rescue bots since they have high movement, aid, and access to canto. And that’s not even mentioning their general utility by having flier effectiveness, although there are a ton of mages with Excalibur who can basically do the same thing and more (just with way less mobility).

Must’ve been RNG screwing then, my archers got really bad levels.

I think they suck just because it is so hard to level them up. Every single unit in the roster by the end for me was fully promoted except for the thieves and archers. Tobin, Python, and Leon were still just snipers I never got a single bow knight. They attacked every single turn the entire playthrough but almost never killed anything so they hardly leveled up. Atlas and Alm are just better bow users I think.

In the middle of postgame and first of all, amazing hack! Had a really good time and am currently grinding to get all the characters. I definitely consider this the definitive way to experience the story of Valentia!

That being said, I’m currently having an issue because I decided it’d be fun to make Randal, one of the postgame characters, a mage using a pitchfork (don’t ask me why, it was just a whim), but now I’m in a position where Randal cannot use any magic on player phase. I suspect it’s because he does not have a spell list since he’s a postgame character, so the game just gives him the default mage weapon of Fire, but he is essentially locked to using Fire on enemy phase if he wants to attack since he does not have the B. Magic or W. Magic options despite having Fire in his inventory and being able to use it on enemy phase. Is there any shot this can get fixed or should I just put him in a different class?

Just tested this out and found the same issue, I’d say just put him into another class or back into the Cavalier line.

I’m on the final chapter now. I never played Gaiden or Echoes, so I can’t speak to how faithfully the story or gameplay mechanics were implemented, but this was a very enjoyable hack. Here’s my thoughts on the game as a whole, as well as my final squad with comments on each unit.

Gameplay
As mentioned above, I didn’t play the original game this was based on. Based on this hack, I would say that Gaiden probably was a relatively unique Fire Emblem in terms of mechanics compared to say the GBA titles since there were quite a few things that I was not used to.

I liked that weapons were generally weak because it allowed for combat to focus more on individual units’ strengths rather than one shotting every enemy. The route split was interesting and implemented well. Promotions were a bit annoying since I did not particularly want to go back to the extra chapters in order to promote a unit.

Map design was strong and I didn’t feel that the game was a slog at any point. Maps tended to be short and sweet (some were really short).

Archers felt very different in this game. Bows had massive range, but it is balanced out by archers generally having weak stats. Overall the implementation was fine and it did not feel like archers were broken.

Deployment size was generally a bit too high because I ended up benching my weaker characters and still clearing maps comfortably.

Stat rings and shields were an interesting mechanic at first, but later felt a bit too commonplace since there were more enough to give all my units one.

What was with the Dracoshield? Desaix’s comments about receiving it as a gift in his first appearance made me think it would be actually used as part of the game, but it ended up being only seen on bosses you weren’t supposed to kill yet in the story and disappeared in the bosses’ next appearances.

Characters
The characters were interesting and had personality. Again, I can’t compare them to their original iterations, but you did a good job regardless. One character I did not like at all and do not feel like he deserved redemption is Fernand. He was an asshole and a traitor who took up arms against Alm’s party and taunted Mathilda before what he thought was her presumed death, so I find it bemusing that Clive forgave him so easily. Also, Berkut is insane and I feel really bad for Rinea.

The villagers from the beginning with Alm were pretty useless from a gameplay perspective. Their bases were mediocre and their growths sucked. Among them, I ended up using only Kliff (relatively sparingly at that) after the earlygame because units who joined later were simply better and did not require as much babying.

Story
I don’t understand Emperor Rudolf’s plan. Why did he let Alm kill him and only tell him the truth afterwards rather than join forces with Alm against the Duma Faithful? I understand that he wanted to send Alm away to keep him safe when he was a child, but why keep up the facade by the time Alm nearly conquered all of Valentia? Also, Conrad was supposedly tailing Celica closely the whole time, so how did Jedah manage to replace him for several chapters without the real Conrad noticing?

I assume these things were part of the original plot, so it’s not your fault. The story as a whole was nevertheless pretty good.

Squad

Good in earlygame, mediocre in middlegame, and good in lategame as a combat unit. Personality-wise, he’s a little too much of a goody two shoes, but still an enjoyable (if somewhat stereotypical) protagonist.

I really like her! She has a strong personality and her portrait is very pretty. She’s an excellent combat unit too, with her ability to use magic and swords.

Why is her mouth open

She was a little annoying at first but grew on me as the game went on. Rather squishy, but very good with the Saunion.

I thought I would drop him after a certain point because his growths are not great, but he got a bit blessed with levelups and ended up being quite decent.

Basically Clive except much better.

Archers are pretty weak in this game, but still good for chip damage.

She has great growths, but joined a bit late to make maximum usage out of them. She’s also really squishy, especially because magic costs HP to cast.

The only member of the villager squad that I used (mostly because I made him a mage and a unit with ranged attacks plus heal always has utility).

Basically Clive 2. Not sure why Berkut hated him so much.

I gave her the early Levin Sword which made her a really good combat unit in earlygame to midgame when most enemies did not have much Res.

Mommy pegasus knight. All the pegs in this game had pretty good stats/growths so I used them all.

She turned out better than Boey so I picked her for the mage in Celica’s squad.

Typical healer.

Those growths are so tasty. I typically don’t like training ā€œEst archetypeā€ units, but I felt like using her since both her sisters were part of my main squad too.

Not as good as Palla, but still serviceable. I probably wouldn’t have kept her if not for her narrative connection with the other pegs.

He’s an absolute beast and the MVP of Celica’s party. His ability to tank both physical and magical attacks after promotion to Dreadknight made him a one-man army with the Holy Sword (and later Mercurius at endgame). I also like his personality.

He has good growths, but not too much opportunity to use them due to his late join time.

He was a good tank up to midgame who fell off a bit towards the end due to the higher amount of enemy magic users.

Standard healer.
