Hard agree on the PRF part. PRFs are like plague when it’s given literally just because they want to make a unit unique gameplay wise when stats, skills, classes exist.

It was my first FE and I thought it was amazing for a long time, but FE8 has lackluster “almost everything”, with gameplay and music being the best part of the mush. The writing especially suffers in Ephraimmode. Still better than FE7 to me.

Yes, the developers said around when Awakening was released that they, too, reset.

But this is a big part of the reason why some of the later games have so many design flaws in relation to permadeath. Kaga did not expect resetting, and the series formula is devised with this mindset. The current developers have no idea how to actually handle permadeath, and so the mechanic only adds tedium, because resetting. 3H for example is terribly designed for permadeath.

I’d generally agree with this but i recently played a blind Ironman of Awakening on hard and got through the game with close to no casualities, and even in the case of casualities you have child and Einherjar units to fill up your slots. Same goes for Fates really, so while how they handled Ironmans (just put in nearly unlimited amounts of optional units) is certainly a bit different from previous titles (units that you get throughout the main chapters and are atleast somewhat relevant for atleast the chapter’s story), it’s still enough to where ironmans are perfectly viable. That aside i heard 3H is really bad in regards to ironmans plenty of times, but i haven’t played that one yet.

Kaga literally stated that fire emblem was made around not resetting when units died. That’s the entire philosophy behind archanea unit balance and design.

Nihil is bad game design.

FE10’s story gets meme’d on a ton but it’s actually not the worst in the series (spoiler alert: it’s FE14) and only slightly below average for an FE game.

It gets memed a lot for not being as good as PoR but I don’t think the community as a whole puts RD’s story in the same lowly category with Fates.

At least RD still had the many solid characters of the Tellius series.
Fates on the other hand had a laughably bad story and most of the characters except a few are very forgettable.

There is little reason to return to FE6 after playing Project Ember
Cannot even look at this one without an immense wave of disappointment, every game in this series has reason to be played. Except FE8. No but in all seriousness, FE6 and PE are such radically different experiences in the end, it’s fine if you prefer either one but to compare them like that is foolish and that goes both ways. It’s kind of like FE3 vs FE12 in that regard.
At least RD still had the many solid characters of the Tellius series

Yeah I agree on this one. I think I mentioned it in a how to make archers good thread before or smth like that. Chucking 2-3 range bows into a game that wasn’t built on having that from the beginning in order to make archers good is a terrible move. Obviously FE6’s maps weren’t made with universal 2-3 bows in mind so the end result is only archers are really suitable for taking on other archers and it’s just generally awkward.
The battle platforms on the battle screens of the GBA FE games are the worst. The battle screens look so much better in the DS games (and the arenas of the GBA entries) since at least the background is not a still image.
aren’t those more of a still image than what GBA does? Either way I would much prefer that style in GBA hacks IF the bg scrolled with the camera but alas it does not.

My personal view on both 3 and 12 as a whole is “a game with very high highs and very low lows”
When it’s good, it’s very very good, but when the maps tank in FE3/12?
Christ on a bike it’s fucking terrible, easy some of the worst the series has to offer.
Now the Kris half, yeah I feel the same way.

FE1 is unironically a good game. Its main flaws, in my opinion, boil down largely to slow and clunky control feel. There are some wonky design choices in there (Medeus’ defenses make it way easier than it should be to softlock in the final chapter, unless magic can hurt him at melee range), but for the most part it’s a really solid and retroactively very interesting and unique installment.
I do think that it’s nigh unplayable today given the other options there are in regards to experiencing FE1 cough shadow dragon but most of my gripes there stem from the experience of playing the game rather than the game’s design itself and on that front, yeah FE1 is perfectly decent.
Sort of an extension of the above, I don’t think Fire Emblem, or any game, needs to be designed around (i.e. “designed under the assumption of”) optimal or high-level play on the player’s part. It’s okay to include things that are useless to that playstyle if they add to the game in other ways.

The stat scaling of FEs 1, 3, and 5 was good actually and makes each individual point in a given stat much more meaningful.
Idk if I’d call the scaling in these games ideal because unit growth and general balance is fucking bonkers in these games, Palla, but it’s interesting and fun.

Alright Hot Takes Time:
Fe1:
-Not every class promoting is a amazing idea that should come back
-Solid Foundation
-The player phase theme is amazing
-Iron Manning is how the series is supposed to be played.

Fe2:
-I think Gaiden is by far better than echoes.
-Alm being stuck in the draco volcano and being attacked each turn is a amazing gameplay/story integration.
-Gaiden is pretty fun and replayable with graveyard warping, infinite warp, broken rings, etc.

Fe3:
-Interesting but overrated and slow,
-Lorenz exploding is godly.

Fe4:
-Verdane Enemy phase is the only music in Fe4 that i dislike.
-I dislike prologue as a map.
-Travant is the best character in the series.
-We need more units like Lex: Bad early game, Great mid game, Meh Late game.

Fe5:
-Every mechanic introduced is amazing.
-FuCC being hidden from the player is good as it surprises the player.
-Max Hit being 99 and min hit being 1 should be the norm in the series.
-B route > A route
-Capture should be the norm in the series.
-Joke units like Shannam are amazing and should be in more games.
-I like very cryptic recruitment methods that also require to kill off a unit.
-Berserk is a amazing staff.

Fe6:
-The hit rates in Fe6 are at their best. Every hit chance being at 100% is just bad game design. Why have a hit% in the first place.
-Everyone is perfectly usable in FE6 Hard Mode. (Besides Sophia (Who’s made bad on purpose)
-Fe6 has the best unit balance in the series.
-Not every unit should be equally good. There needs to be a clear difference between 9/10 units and 5/10 units. Not, everyone is 9/10 or 10/10.
-Roy is my favorite lord in the series gameplay wise. I love how he’s weak but has his niches and has to be escorted onto the seize points strategically. He’s like the king in chess if chess was a seize game instead of Kill Boss.
-Sacae > Illia
-Fe6 is the best game in the series behind Conquest.
-Fe6 has the best story in the series behind Fe5 and Half of fe4.
-Player phase gameplay >>>>>> Enemy Phase gameplay.

Fe7:
-Not a good starting point. Enforces a lot of FE “stereotypes” and ugh (I hate saying this) “Pitfalls”. Haha green units bad, rout the enemy spam, archers bad, Too many defend maps, training lords, weak enemies, enemy phase gameplay, etc.
-Bad game in general.
-Low deployment slots let you rarely use other units. Instead the player will most likely just level up 6-8 units until Late game.
Fe8:
-Too short
-Too easy
-Grinding doesn’t work when the game is super easy already.
-Creature campaign should be in more games.
-The story is bad, really bad and super overrated (Hell Warriors story is literally the same as SS but one gets hated and the other praised.)

Fe9:
-Game is pretty bad
-Hand axe to win is not good gameplay.
-Killing Naesala > Talking to him. He’s such a fun boss to take on.
-Ike is the worst lord in the series both gameplay wise and character wise with so many asspulls it’s insane.
-Bonus Exp should never ever come back ever again.
-Only 3 entire master seals in the whole game??? Being forced to level to 21 instead of promoting at 10-20 is bad design and promotes stat inflation.
-Hard Mode Ashnard is the worst final boss in the series. (I sure love only having 2 units that can damage him, one of them being Ike, really great boss).

Fe10:
-Naesala got ruined character wise.
-BK got ruined character wise.
-Team switching doesn’t work and just kills avaliability.
-Part 4 is the worst part of the game (And the series tbf)
-Stat inflation and enemy spam isn’t good design
-The OST bores me to death, easily worst in the series.

Fe11:
-Criminally underrated.
-Not Ugly
-H5 is one of the best designed difficulties in the series besides the first 3 maps.
-The online shop makes it so much better because you can actually get Master seals before chapter 10 (And you only get 1 in 10, 2 in 12)
-Berserker should have had C rank axes at base.
-DSFE avoid sucks

Fe12:
-Terrible maps
-Gaiden’s are horrible here.
-The 8 Prologue maps are horrible.

Fe13:
-Only fun part is post game unit building
-Lunatic is not fun. Enemy spam + Stat inflation isn’t good design.
-Sol > Galeforce (Until post game). Awakening is enemy phase focused.

Fe14:
Birthright:
-Overhated like all of fates
-Fixed every issue with awakening possible.
-Ryoma is overrated as a unit.
-I legit love Zola in Birthright
-Fighting garon is always fun

Conquest:
-Best game in the series
-Best gameplay in the series
-Gunter is severely underrated
-Capture is amazing
-Story isn’t bad (Fates got shit localization)
(Also please play JP Fates)
-Only bad map in the game is Kitsune Forest
-Endgame is one of the best maps in the series, same as 26, 23, 22, 8, 9, 10, 12, 17, 18, etc.
-Best cast in the series.
-No durability makes each weapon choice strategic due to buffs and debuffs
-1-2 range not being able to double is amazing.
-Pair up should come back
-Dual strike should come back
-Baby realms was innofensive
-Hans is one of my favorite “Villains”, He’s just someone who’s trying to reach a better place in society by any means while he’s still under the chains of Nohrian culture. Basically Caellach but better.

Revelations:
-Massively overhated
-One of the best games in the series
-The maps are the best the series ever offered (Besides Chapter 14 and Sumeragi’s Elevator)
-Huge cast makes it great for replays and Iron Mans
-Valla is one of the best settings IS created

Echoes:
-It ruined every good thing in gaiden
-Berkut is not a good villain. He has great voice acting but he’s a bad villain.
-Berkut X Rinea is literally Berkut just shouting at Rinea and ignoring what she says.

3H:
-The story is a mess
-80% of the game being monastery isn’t good
-Theres only really 2 paths (SS and CF), VW is a SS copy paste and AM has 2 different maps and that is it.
-Marianne is easily the worst character in the game

Warriors:
-Very Underrated
-FEW >>>>> HW
-Clones don’t matter when they all have a amazing playstyle. Meanwhile HW is just a lot of playstyles that are just janky and slow.

General stuff:
-Soft IronManning is the best playstyle
-Berserk staff should come back

I’d generally agree with most things here although i liked FE10s Soundtrack aswell as Echoes. And bonus EXP and Party split are good ideas with bad implementation
