Share your Ideas of designing a Jagen. Personly I think a Bishop would be intersting. Early game crutch; staff utilty would let them see use though out and Bishops look cool.
Class-wise, I think paladins are the better option. It offers the movility of the cavaliers, and they can take a hit, as well as be good carriers for the early game (or even the whole game). Flier classes can be a good option too, or maybe a FE4/5 mage knight, with a mix of magic and melee.
Story-wise… it can be any promoted class. Depends on the kind of role the “Jagen” plays in the story. Is he/she a mentor? A guardian knight? A bodyguard? A paid mercenary?
What if your lord is a priest/priestess and your mentor is a bishop. Also what if you are making a FE like game or a rom hack and what to have experiment with the concept more. Maybe a valkyrie with swords or axe or lance.
Skeleton lord and Necromancer Jagen or vise versa.
a bael queen with bows and claws , stated like a warrior.
Puppet summon jaegen bows and axes
i think this is a neat idea from narrative standpoint
I think have persistent utility is a good idea because it’s always nice for the player to keep using the jagen when the story makes them likable or relevant. Staves, high aid, or thieving are all good options in this regard.
I also like when the jagen is not a hard carry in combat beyond the first few chapters. Zachary from Four Kings is a great example - can survive a single round of combat with pretty much anyone early on due to speed and starting health pool, but cannot survive a second round. You still have to deploy him wisely.
That could be a really good idea for a game, same as experimenting with the classes. It all depends on what the story and gameplay requires from the Jagen.
the jagen must be essential for the early game and face crit rates from every enemy in the game.
Anything less would be too easy.
I had a Jagen that was a Battle Sage. Swords and Magic, but no staff utility. I gave her weak magic but stronger Str, and enough stats/growths to still work as a tank for most of early-mid game
I believe Length’s of Time had an earlygame bishop, but I think you had another “proper” jeigan as well.
Druid Jagen that can heal but is locked to anima in the early game before you can buy dark tomes.
One Jagen I am quite proud of:
ARTEMIS: A Baellista, a spider capable of shooting bows, in story a “mother/pet” role of the protagonist, the only friend she has at the start of the game as she lives alone on the plains, in gameplay a sniper who is unable to attack at one range and thus cannot enemy phase, but she is someone who can bait enemies too, especially since she is a high HP / Low Def sorta girl. Artemis also has river/mountain walk, which snipers don’t have, but snipers can use ballista, such giving a reason why Artemis can’t do all your bow related duty (Even though Artemis is better at the front than at the back with a ballista anyhow, I at least presume.)
Fe 4 has an interesting twist on the idea i suppose where Sigurd the lord is basically the Jagen. He falls off pretty hard halfway through though literally unplayable…
jokes a side a lord who is the Jagen but dies in the plot could be executed in different ways
Jeralt from Three Houses could have easily been such a role. He even has a personal like this: Blade Breaker - Fire Emblem Wiki
It wouldn’t surprise me if he was planned to be more playable.
But Sigurd isn’t really a jagen who dies halfway because pretty much all of them die, Quan leaving the party for a while would fit the “Temporary Jagen” better, considering he is also a pre promote.
A lords father could be an interesting temporary jagen, considering that fire emblem loves killing off the parents of protagonists.
yes. also i ment he is sort of a Jagen as he is far stronger or at least easy to use than the 1st gen people but that was mostly a joke. 4 to my memory doesn’t have a older charter who has has mentor role. The Jagen charters usually have a plot and gameplay role that are pretty well integrated which is nice. There was a game, Unicorn Overlord, that despite being inspired by ogre battle and be a rts had many FE tropes like a Jagen 2 cavs a healer saved be swordsman.
i think u even had to talk to him with her to recuit him if memory serves.
When I first played 3 houses i was a little disapoited that your Dad was not playable. He even has name that start with a J.
In my hack, The Rise of Dragons, the Jagen is a Ranger Nomad Trooper.
I did this because it conserves the classic utility of the Mounted Jagen by having high movement, rescue utility, and an effective weakness that you have to look out for.
He also starts out with a Silver Bow and a Steel Sword. This is so that, when you need to kill off an enemy threat quickly, he then can’t counter at 1 range during Enemy phase, because he’ll be equipped with the Bow, and enemies won’t suicide into him. Unlike how a traditional Paladin Jagen would potentially waste uses of a Silver Lance during enemy phase.
I’ll throw in one: Falcon Knight Jagen.
Make them essentially have Jagen stats you would see from a Paladin. Essentially a slow Falcon Knight with more Def than Res.
The appeal is that when they fall off combat-wise, they can still be useful. Flying over terrain, rescue dropping, you can even have them be part of the Pegasus Triangle Attack so they can still have some combat use later on. This depends on how you handle map design, but it’s an interesting thought.
Some other ideas is to give the Jagen some limited access to remove their bow weakness. Maybe a personal weapon that does as such.
Or you could design an early game around few archer enemies.
