When I finished Shrunken Stones, there was this devil on my shoulder that wanted me to try the concept of miniaturizing other games in the series. After I finished my FE4 LTC (118 turns in case you were curious), the idea to shrink the 2nd generation down to the GBA minimum of 15x10 took up more and more of my head, until I eventually ended up doing it. Oddly enough, this also resulted in me measuring and subsequently finding out the heights of every playable 2nd gen unit (except 2 substitute units). While I did take creative liberties in some areas, be they out of necessity or personal wishes, the core experience should mostly resemble what FE4’s 2nd generation would be like when shrunken down from the usual 4096 square tiles per map to the GBA’s minimum of 150 (Yes, I did the math. That’s a 96% size reduction if you’re curious).
Julia being causes the map to softlock during bonus experience distribution. her revival event plays out, then BXP starts, then her captured dialogue plays again before the game simply freezes. Otherwise, this is a really cool concept!
I like Jugdral, and it had been a bit since I had played something set there. So I decided to download this. Overall, I pretty much stomped everything with the buffed holy weapons (most of them are brave now) and wrote a stream of consciousness as I noticed things. Chapter 6 was the hardest chapter because I had no holy weapon and Schmidt’s AI was acting up - pretty much every other problem was solved by throwing Shanan at it. Most of the story changes I can accept as creative liberty, though the changes to Altenna’s recruitment struck me as odd: instead of seeing her brother in person and asking questions, she ended up seeing her parents in a daydream? There isn’t even a talk conversation with her and Leaf.
I’ve edited down my notes into something a bit more concise below.
Bugs
When the class roll plays, edited classes retain the descriptions of whatever they replaced.
Free Knight can move on mountains, while Axe Knight can’t.
The supply mug is broken and instead shows the current character with a broken palette.
Severe graphical glitches occur when killing Bramsel. The game tries to load an event but fails, and the game no longer renders any units until suspending. When visiting Darna to recruit Leen, she spawns on top of Aless as well.
The Levin/Sety talk repeated itself once.
Somehow, one of the green units seemed to spawn under a unit.
In the ending, all of Celice’s A support scenes played one after another: he had an A with Lana here.
Typos: “Mtold me” - Fee’s recruitment.
“That’s the queue” - Ch7 turn 1.
Text cuts off in Aless vs Jabarro boss quote.
There’s some odd formatting in Faval’s recruitment, but I didn’t note exactly what.
“Prince Julis” in a Ch10 house.
Other observations
A fair amount of the original talk conversations seem to have disappeared, especially towards the back half of the hack. The Ch8 Aless/Nanna convo, for one: with him having an automatic A support with Leen, was it disabled due to the old love point gain?
I accidentially stumbled across what was originally Asaello’s secret event converted for Faval. I also got what was once Sharlow’s berserk staff. I assume I missed some more sub secret events?
Alvis used his Silver Blade for the first time in recorded history. My friends were in hysterics as Celice got doubled with it.
Brian moving caught me off guard, and well, sleep everywhere is accurate to vanilla!
I bought Julia a Master Seal for the final chapter, but she plot promoted. What happens if I manually promote her before the final chapter?
I appreciate that some support conversations were written for this.
I understand why everyone gets a free level - game’s too short, but it takes a long time to watch everyone get that level. Is there any way to give everyone their level up without showing it?
All the holy weapon users. Arthur got a few levels so I promoted him, but he didn’t do too much in the end. Oifaye and Fin had the best bases, so I just stuck with them afterwards. Leen dances. And then I got Lana to promotion because I’m biased and I always pair Celice and Lana. FE4’s the game that made shipping a gameplay mechanic, what can I say.
Overall, I enjoyed myself and it was a decent way to spend a night. Turn counts: 13, 7, 7, 6, 7, 6.
A lot quicker compared to the original FE4, that’s for sure!
I tried playing the first chapter, but noticed that all attacks seem to deal significantly more damage than the previews say they will. Is this intentional because of some hidden value or just a glitch?
I’m not sure what you’re talking about, since the damage values seem to be lining up with the previews. If you can send screenshots, that would help with a diagnosis.
New update, y’all! This primarily focuses on some bugs and extra support conversations that were added. Check this word for the latest version, or the OP, because I put the new link there.
Not for a while, if at all. I mostly wanted to do FE4 G2 because it would be a decent intro for trying to shrink other games in the series due to the low map count.
