We need bald corrin

Alright, a minor update this round. F1 Corrin is still under progress, but since a few people have asked for “Bald-rrin” here you go. As for what is left to go, I’m currently working on her 5th haircut out of 12. Something that I’ve encountered is I can’t actually fit the full mane of two of her haircuts in the hackbox without shrinking her height to be shorter than M1 Corrin (whom they’re supposed to be the same height). Now you may think that after 24 variants (M1 Corrin and F1 Corrin) the project is done, but there are two more body alts of Corrin (M2 Corrin (taller Male, who has I think one or two different haircuts from memory) and F2 Corrin (shorter Female, who has I think 3 or 4 different haircuts to F1 Corrin)), so there is actually 48 haircut variants. I’ve also decided that for the F Corrin’s she has 6 haircuts (if you count both F1 and F2 variants) where she wears a headband. Now in her default look she also wears a hairpin which sort of sits on the headband, but can look out of place on some other haircuts. So I’ve also decided that only the headband haircuts will also get her hair pin, but I’ll also release the hair pin as its own sprite if people want to stick it on their own to the others.

I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Corrin M1)

Took me a while, been busy but also working on 24 Corrins straight is kind of draining. There is another 24 variants left, but I think I’ll do a break portrait or two first before resuming them. This time I’ve also posted the bald base and the hairclip piece for usage as well.

I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Corrin F1)

Alright the second set of Corrins, the base female body type and her twelve haircuts. Like M Corrin I’ve managed to keep her hair to 3 unique tones and her darkest skin tone so, it should be plausible to re colour with a little bit more effort if required. These haircuts were a fair bit bigger and more complex on average compared to M Corrin so it took a bit longer. As I said previously I decided to only do the default hair pin on her 3 headband haircuts, but if people want to add it I have it also at the bottom of this section standalone alongside the bald base version of F1 Corrin.

So I decided to do a break portrait after the first two Corrin sets, so here is an OC I made for the CCC competition. She was designed to be related (sister) to a previous OC Beryl, although maybe initially opposing her as they were brought up differently indicated by their different clothing design philosophies (One is in fancy armour and the other is in more plain armour and a simple fur cloak). Her hair design is also a mega braid like Titania, so I pictured Esme to be wielding an Axe whether on foot or horseback like Titania.

I’ll start working on the next set of Corrins now, but will probably do another break portrait in between sets.

I’ve updated the OC post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (OCs/Misc - Esme)

Esme

So it’s been like a year since I’ve drawn an OC. This one is named Esme short for Esmeralda (going with the green gem theme here). I envisioned her as related to Beryl a previous OC, maybe being an older sister, where she’d be maybe estranged from her a bit being raised a bit differently (hence the difference in clothing quality, with one being clad in fancy armour and the other wearing a fur cloak over a simple, practical plate). I also really felt like drawing a mega braid (like Titania), so that is where the haircut idea came from. Then I also felt like drawing a fur cloak, but not a white one after doing all of those ones in Fates. I’m actually pretty proud of how her hair and cloak fur turned out, but the hair got covered up a bit, so I’m showing it separately below.

Recommendations:
I originally envisioned her design to be one of the following class types
Infantry Axe Unit (but not a fighter), Hero, Soldier, Cavalier or Paladin.

Alright here is the next set of Corrins. These ones I think have turned out the best on average so far. I’m hoping to finish F2 Corrin before October, but I think I may do another break portrait first. I’m thinking for this year my theme for Spritetober will be Opposing Heroes/Villains and Rivalries (eg Corrin v Garon), so I’d draw pairs of characters, but October is also looking really busy for me so we’ll see how much I get to draw. I’d like to draw about 10 portraits for it, but we’ll see how we go.

Alright the third set of Corrins, the older taller male body type and his twelve haircuts. Like the prior Corrins I’ve managed to keep the hair to 3 unique tones and the darkest skin tone so, it should be plausible to re colour with a little bit more effort if required. I actually like how these haircuts turned out compared to the M1 Corrins. Even the ones that are similiar or shared with him (although I redrew each one for M2 because the face angle and size is a bit different compared to M1). Aside from the face size and angle difference M2 Corrin is also taller compared to M1 so he is comparable to his older brothers in height.

Ooo, I like that headband.

Oh, well, that’s the same thing that I was somewhat going to do lol. Well, maybe it’s a bit different for me since all the hero characters have already been done for me, while I’m just gonna do villains in October.

New Fire Emblem, new section. Until its confirmed FE 18 takes place in Fodlan primarily I won’t place Fortune’s Weave characters in the Fodlan section. I think for things to share a saga they need to either take place in the primarily in the same geographic area and not be too removed from eachother (eg Elibe gets FE 6 and 7 and Tellius gets FE 9 and 10, but Archanea (FE1, 3, 11 and 12), Ylisse(Awakening) and Valentia(FE2, Echoes) do not share categories). With this break portrait done, it gives me roughly 10ish days to finish F2 Corrin and thus completing my Fates project before October… Well thats the plan anyway.

I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE (FE18 TBA) Saga - FE Fortune’s Weave - Leda)

FE Fortune’s Weave - Leda

So a new section hits Fire Emblem. This is probably earliest I’ve drawn a character based on the material they have released. Her pose is based on her portrait in the Direct video, however most of the details of the cloak aren’t visible in it so I was looking at her battle animations to sort of work out how it sorta looks. She ends up using a lot of colours and her earrings ended up being too small to add the little flower looking decal shape that her head piece has. Also Kurahana Chinatsu’s character portraits tend to look at the screen since in Three Houses the portraits aren’t used for character to character speaking (in a traditional sense, they’re speaking to Byleth who is you, so I guess its character to character in that way, but it doesn’t work for other characters or other supports), I decided to angle her eyes so she is looking more towards her left, where she could look like she is facing a person for a conversation. However I do have a more looking back eye alt as well.

EDIT: I slept on it, and decided to go back and touch up her cloak, eyes and neck jewelry

It has been done. 48 Corrin haircuts, 4 bald variants. 52 Corrins… Thats almost half the amount of Fates portrait variants I did for Non Corrins. so all up thats almost 200 portraits done just for Fates. I’m not sure I’ll draw another portrait before October starts, got a number of things coming up that will keep me busy. I am looking forward to not drawing Corrin anymore for now though.

Finally the last set of Corrins, the younger smaller female body type and her twelve haircuts. I think after doing 36 other Corrins, these haricuts on average turned out the best. compared to the others. I’ve not got really anything else to say about these anymore. There’s 48 haircut variants in total so I think I’ve kind of exhausted my commentary on them. I did take advantage of the fact that the smaller Corrin can fit her larger haircuts a bit better than the taller Corrin though. The only re use from F1 Corrin are the hair buns (because I was feeling lazy) and the hair clip.

Here is “F2 Bald-rrin”

I’ve also updated the Sillies post with the below Corrin set collection too.

FE Corrin Set

Like Robin, this is another collation of Corrin’s haricut variants 48 haircuts + 4 bald variants, so 52 portraits in whole.

Here is a Dropbox link of all the portraits as well;

Now that I finally made an account I can finally say that your work is incredible Garytop.
Thanks a lot for the insane amount of portraits, and here’s to even more in the future.

So here is the first duo for sprite-tober, the main rivals for Advance Wars, Andy and Eagle.
While Sturm is the main bad guy for Advance Wars 1+2, he isn’t really Andy’s main opponent and moreso everyone’s combined one. However Andy and Eagles (initially 1 sided) rivalry is treated as a bigger deal where they even have a secret final fight that is in my opinion harder than the final battle in AW1 and is also only accessible post that fight as well. Then when the clones are unleashed in Dual Strike again, Eagle considers Andy’s clone a disservice to the real deal and an insult (kinda like Vegeta, who I did get those kind of vibes from him when I was drawing Eagle).
I had fun also drawing these 2 in GBA FE classes too. I probably won’t do that for all of the portraits for sprite-tober.

The next duo I have planned are another Non FE Property related duo.

I’ve updated the Non Fire Emblem Properties post with the below entries under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Nintendo - Advance Wars - Andy and Eagle)

Advance Wars - Andy

The main protagonist of Advance Wars 1 Andy. Who lets a kid who doesn’t know what an airport is in charge of commanding an army in modern warfare? I looked at several designs and decided to take aspects of a few of his appearances rather than the entirety on one. His hair colour and pose are based on his WayForward design in Reboot Camp. His hair shaping though is largely based on the OG Advance Wars 1 and 2. His clothing colouring and design is based on his Advance Wars 1 look. I also aimed to make him slightly shorter than the Sami I did earlier in the year as well. During his drawing process after I coloured his body, I decided to shrink his head about 3 times, to bring it slightly more in line with regular FE body proportions (still ended up pretty big). Overall pretty happy with how his facial features turned out, but decided to colour his hair in a more stylised simple anime style because its kind of hard to work out how it would shape in a more detailed look as his hair is either shaded really simply in his OG artwork, or his has a more stylised and different haircut in Reboot Camp. As for his FE alt, I decided to give him GBA Soldier armour as to me it seemed like the most jack of all trades class with no outstanding perks or cons which sort of fits him.

Advance Wars - Eagle

The main leader of Green Earth from Advance Wars, the master of the air Eagle. When I was younger he was my favourite CO, when I got older that changed to Grit instead (although he remains my favourite Green Earth CO). This design like Andy took some aspects from a few of his designs, however the main inspiration was Dual Strike this time. He does wear a scarf in Advance Wars 1 and Reboot camp so thats why that is there though. He doesn’t have a jacket ensignia and instead a shoulder pocket in his DS design. One thing I did struggle with was that he holds his folded arms a lot higher than what I drew, but I felt it looked a bit off when I raised his arms to do that though. His hair colouring and streaks are based on his DS design as well. I think I spent the most time on his goggles, because they took several iterations to sorta get right. As for his FE class design, I decided to dress him like a FE7 Wyvern, dressing him in the same armour as Heath (although he has both his 2nd shoulder pads whereas Heath is asymmetrical with only a double on his right shoulder) which I feel suits him obviously being the air specialist.

Now, all we need, is a Yellow/Gold Comet CO
Patience is the KEY

Its been a while, I’ve been busy with a fair bit of IRL events. One which was going to a con, which got evacuated so that was interesting. So between having a lot less time than anticipated and not wanting to linger on this set of opposing characters here they are. I chose these two because its also the 30th anniversary for Gundam Wing as well.

I’m tossing up on whether or not the next duo will be an FE property or another Non gaming property (the non gaming one might be a trio release instead of a duo).

I’ve updated the Non Fire Emblem Properties post with the below entries under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Non Game Franchises - Gundam Wing - Heero Yuy and Zechs Merquise)

Gundam Wing - Heero Yuy

I’m not gonna lie, out of the duo of sprites I did with Heero, I spent a lot less time on him. I already shrunk his head a few times, but his early 90s anime hair is just simply immense. His eyes were also kind of tricky to draw too. Overall I think I got the essence of him across, but I’m only okay with how he turned out. If I were to revisit this one I’d probably revisit his overall shading and colouring again.

Gundam Wing - Zechs Merquise

Out of the duo, I spent more time on Zechs, who ended up pushing the colour palette limit. I decided to go with a similar pose to Heero to make them more opposing when facing eachother. I kind of wish I had a 5th colour to play with for his helmet, but then that’d be really greedy with his colour palette. I think if I were to revisit this one, I’d maybe do a helmetless alt and also clean up some of his helmet and shoulder colouring.

So here are the next rivaling duo. This time from Fire Emblem Heroes, both characters I actually wanted to draw a while back, but couldn’t think of a way at the time to work it out. (also was probably pre occupied with either Fates or Awakening sprites too). These two I was a lot more motivated to draw and had more fun. Probably because I wasn’t sitting on them for as long and losing the motivation to draw them while busy with other things. I’m a little behind track for 10 sprite for October, but we’ll see if we can make it.

I’ve updated the main post with the below entries under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Zenith Saga - Fire Emblem Heroes - Þjazi and Niðavellir)

Fire Emblem Heroes - Þjazi

The villain character of ancient Niðavellir. The Jotun Princess who opposed the independence of the Dwarves. I actually really like her character design, a huge female warrior who looks the part of a barbarian. Someone who actually looks like they could wield the massive weapon she has and not a twig inside some overly big or intricate armour. I actually wanted to try spriting her when she first released in FEH, but her design while sort of simple looking is deceptively complex for GBA insertion. Her hair actually has 4 different colours (Purple/pink, Rouge/Red, Pale Green/Yellow and Light Blue). I actually managed to implement them all in the sprite as well as maintain colours for her red eye paint, white tribal looking tattoos, black straps and red cape. The only tattoo/war paint I didn’t put on was the one on her shoulder because when I did it looked really odd to the point it looked like bad skin shading rather than a tattoo. I also really proud about how her hair turned out, so I have an alt without her cloak. The part I’m the least satisfied with is her braids which is why I have alts without them.

Fire Emblem Heroes - Niðavellir

The first ancient dwarven king of Niðavellir and also its namesake. When he was first released I thought his design was pretty cool, but also maybe too eccentric to fit into a hackbox. So I decided on his pose to be based on his attack art rather, which allows his hair to be angled a bit rather than standing up straight. After working out his pose, the rest actually came too quite easily. I like how his hair turned out, especially the colouring and the fading into blonde/yellow bits. Other than that I made him shorter on purpose being a dwarf to contrast to Pjazi. I think if I were to revisit this one, I’d probably revisit his cloak more so on our right side.

My favorite duo out of all the ones you released this month so far. Mainly so since they’re the most detailed ones you put out here and managed to fit the complex parts of their designs (Þjazi’s overall body, and Niðavellir’s hair. He may be shorter here to accomodate his hairstyle, but it fits the portrait because he is a dwarf). Overall, pretty great portraits here.

Alright so here are the next two portraits. I was suprisingly more motivated to draw Seymour than Yuna, but thats maybe because he has a more interesting design (that and out of the girls I prefer Lulu out of the 3 in FFX). Final Fantasy X is still my favourite and I do hope one day it gets a proper remake/remaster vs the current HD release. The company that did it (it wasn’t Square) screwed up and only upresed the textures on the combat models of the main characters who have have higher detailed clothes, but less bones and details in the face (because the characters don’t talk/emote much in combat) and used those over all of their models. This is why the original releases have the characters emote better because the non FMV cutscenes have a different model to the combat ones that have more bones in the faces to allow the characters to be more expressive.

So the aim is to do two more portraits for October to round out to a nice 10, but we’ll see if I can make it.

I’ve updated the main post with the below entries under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Games - Square Enix - Final Fantasy X - Seymour and Yuna)

Final Fantasy X - Seymour

So Seymour, while not the final boss of Final Fantasy X, he is probably the main villain. While I have done Tidus already. Tidus’ personal villain/antagonist isn’t really Seymour, he is more so Yuna’s opposing villain. His design is quite inconsistent between his original artwork by Nomura, his cut scene appearances and in game appearances. I decided to go with the darker blue his in game depictions have rather than the cyan/green blue he has in his artwork. The same for the blue for his robe rather than the almost black his artwork has. I did consider drawing him in the past, but his eccentric Guado hair style makes it difficult, but I think I found a nice ratio for it. I did wish I had one more colour tone available for the red part of his robe in the openings on his arm, but I had to settle for the dark brown skin tone. Thankfully the hairy parts of his body are actually a bit lower than what the portrait portrays so I didn’t have to worry about body hair, just the tattoos. Overall pretty happy with how this one turned out.

Final Fantasy X - Yuna

So this is the 3rd version of Yuna I’ve done. I’ve always kind of struggled with what to do with her design. Her shoulders are generally pretty plain and so is her hair, so I decided to try something a bit different with the shading for her hair this time round. Another part that is sorta complex about her is the fact she has quite a few colours for a simple design. She has hectochromatic eyes (blue and green) so that meant I definitely had to have blue and green on top of her white top, hair colours, skin colours and black bra colours. I also had to try her hair twice, the first time it was quite small for a FE portrait but probably reasonably sized for her face, but it looked weird next to all the other portraits so I had to increase its size across the board about 2-4 pixels. Not sure if I’d do hair again like this, but I have done it on occasion (eg Siegfried)
