Well, I just finished the whole hack. And I only have one word for it… excellent… finally a good hack of Binding Blade. Maybe the only bad thing I noticed was the nerfing of Sue in that way. Or some units that don’t increase their stats at all. But the rest is excellent work…

very cool hack. for the OG FE6, i cannot play it at all due to the difficulty and outdated gameplay (compared to OG FE8). but when it comes to FE8-base and the project team adjustment to the story, gameplay, etc. i find it super enjoyable. thank you for making this hack so people like me can experience the FE6 story.
edit: i wish there will be casual mode someday

I have so many mixed feelings on this rom and how broken unit balance is, the line 'I literally pulled a Thanos on Nintendo." might be the funniest thing I’ve seen.

i am… the binding blade guy

I mean like fire Emblem the sacred stone you play just as Erika and Seth from the start so…

The first map of FE8 is small, and designed differently to FE6’s opening map, they have different design philosophies.

I’m going to preface this review by saying that this is, without doubt, the worst ROM hack I have ever played. I ran through this recently on the r/FE discord, cataloguing all the design choices I found questionable or outright absurd. There’s a lot.

Talking about this hack is impossible without mentioning Project Ember, which this hack rips off to an impressive degree. It’s not just the assets and writing changes that other people have discussed, map design changes and enemy placement were ripped wholesale from Ember and thrown in here without regard for what would result from them in a different environment. I can prove they were, too. Chapter 20 contains a tiling error that is copied wholesale from Ember, which had the exact same error.

Speaking of aesthetic changes, the music is all over the place, with songs from FE6 redone (poorly) with FE8 NIMAP instruments, songs just plonked in from FE8 or other FE games, and a few direct imports of FE6 songs. Most of it sounds pretty dire, and I would’ve left it switched off if I wasn’t playing it for the purpose of writing this critique. Portraits are largely lifted from Ember, resulting in some very bizarre looks, such as Perceval’s bugged palette.

The game is still infested with bugs. Saul can promote to War Monk, and the first time I used a Bolt Axe with him, the game froze, since the Magic Ax Fix patch wasn’t included. The Eight Legends who randomly spawn in at the end of the Gaiden maps (which I cannot remotely work out the reason for, I suppose it’s suppoed to be “epic” but it just makes them drag on even harder than they did) just sometimes failed to spawn. Anyone with Staff Range + 1 would just crash the game if you tried to use Hammerne at 2 range. Enemy staff users have wildly borked targeting, sleeping NPC villagers and silencing units who couldn’t use magic.

Skills. Skills are the breaking point. Adept ballista users, proc skills all over the place, crit boost everywhere. Past Chapter 8x, the game becomes practically unplayable without abusing save states. I can beat vanilla FE6 on 0%. It’s not about the level of challenge. It’s about randomly just nuking the player. The Tower of Valni and Lagdou Ruins are also just hanging around on the world map for some reason? The game even draws attention to the former. Was useful to get Roy and Lilina up to Level 15 so that they could join the 5 other units who all get galeforce. Once I had those two, Larum with Re-Move, Aptitude Shanna (why?) and Rutger, I didn’t really need anybody else, excluding Fae, who can abuse the Capture skill that pirates and brigands incomprehensibly get to secure an unbreakable Firestone and run through the game with Miracle, Renewal and Boon.

It was convenient, then, that the game supplies the method of pulping your units and transforming them into Spirit Dust. This feature is obviously hilarious, and also helps tear the game balance in half. Basically every unit I didn’t want to deploy (or who was prohibited from being pulped, such as Wolt, who just steals Merlinus’s role in the narrative entirely for some reason) got pulped. Turns out being able to print 30 Spirit Dusts is pretty strong when you have ready access to magic weapons and magic units with Galeforce.

There’s so much more I could say, such as the obliteration of Lilina’s character, the FE8 steal mechanics that blocked me out of many steals and the bizarre world map shops that were placed seemingly with no rhyme or reason, but I’ll end with how the game handles the Ilia/Sacae split. You play Ilia, a group of units from FE7 play The Law of Sacae and The Bow of Swift Wind. Being forced to play those maps with about 5 units, including the useless Florina, was incredibly annoying. They then come back in Chapter 21 sandwiched between multiple reinforcement zones and with nearly broken weapons. At least I was able to abuse the convoy to steal all their stat boosters.

I can’t recommend playing this to anyone. The positive reviews you can see if you scroll above this post baffle me to no end. There’s so much more I could say on this matter, but I’ve already devoted more thought towards this than could possibly be warranted. It’s been hard enough to remain civil while composing this post already. If it somehow evolves into something worth playing, then great! Until then, I would highly recommend looking elsewhere.

The people who worked on this hack have long considered it outdated, unbalanced, and full of well-intentioned but poorly executed plot ideas.

Every single point you brought up, particularly the work copied from Project Ember, has been a known issue for years. There are no plans whatsoever to release more patches/updates for this hack.

The team behind it is currently funneling their efforts into rebuilding the game from scratch, using handmade palettes and portraits, with additional significant changes made to the writing, particularly the inclusion or non-inclusion of any FE7 characters.

If you are looking for a more faithful FE6 experience, I would suggest playing the creator’s other hack; FE6 rebuilt in the FE8 engine.

Ok. What does this have to do with anything he said though? “The developers know it’s bad” doesn’t mean you can’t criticize it, especially in the case of blatantly plagiarizing PE.

Nothing in his review mentioned not being faithful.

Okay, I think I should say something. As someone currently involved in the new, ongoing remake, this old version has all the right reasons and flaws to be criticized, and everyone should criticize and give their opinion if they feel it’s appropriate.

This is the right of everyone who played to share their experience, good or bad, including saying that you would never recommend it and remembering the PE plagiarism case, which has already been resolved and should never be repeated.

Updating this old version is no longer in the plans, and although the new remake process is slow because ZeN and I are currently focusing on real-life issues, the goal is to take all the criticism, old and new, and improve on everything and more. Hopefully, next time we can receive a recommendation from someone to play.:heart_exclamation:

Sorry, I should’ve worded my own thoughts better. I am 100% in agreement with you; it’s the right of anyone to give criticism to media they’ve consumed. By now I’ve lost count of how many times the plagiarism case has been brought up, even though like you said it was resolved a long time ago.

Take all the time you need, I’m an active member of the Discord server so I’m well aware of the cur, and I love and admire all the time and effort you and ZeN have put into both projects!

I played this game too. I had a lot of fun and because I play games only without creating any, I never ran into bugs, intentionally.

My only critic is and was the landspaces of… let’s say 80 percent all maps. Those landscapes really looked outdated, which made me a little sad.

I THINK the creator‘s Intention were to put all new things, that have been created and implemented over the years to give FE6, 7 and 8 a modern touch and look, into a rebuild of FE6 to make it even more… cooler.. better..?? … than it was as a original.

Like UltraFenix said (:see_no_evil_monkey:) everyone can criticize everything in this or a game (but mind The Golden Principle), BUT…! Besides all bugs noted by Captainfisting, this.. hack still IS very good as it is, especially for a gamer like me.

Finished the tower for the first time and got king zephiel then went to the ruins and finished that too and didn’t get anyone? Is this normal? Only missing Galle wyvern lord.

Hey how you doing

I’ve been playing this romhack for 3 days now and I’m on chapter 16. The chapter where you are to fight against Narcian. Everything is good and all until the conversation between Douglas, Roartz and Arcado is finished, after that my game breaks and freezes. Yes, I can’t even play the chapter or start it. I’m using John Emulator on an Android device. What the hell man this is such a boomer.

The game freezes after the conversation in chapter 16 of douglas, how do I fix that?
