Fire Emblem: Eckesachs - FE6, but you play as the bad guys! [Complete story rewrite]

Random question that popped into my head;

Summary

Is there an estimate for how old Mieu is? In Engage I think Jean and Anna are the youngest playable units, and 10 and 11 each. Is Mieu in that range?

Update: Sacae conquered

Summary

The FE7 lord trio is reunited at last…

Might be even younger. She’s incredibly tiny and the way she talks in vanilla says 8 or 9 more than 10 or 11 to me. Being generous.

Of course, that makes her role in this even worse, but that’s Zephiel for ya!

Was thinking of trying this but after reading this and guessing the hanious act Zephilel did with Mieu. I really don’t want to play it anymore

Okay, I don’t want to have this kind of misunderstanding. What Zephiel does is conscript Mieu and force her to fight in his army. Whatever it is you were thinking, I can assure you this is NOT that kind of hack.

Man my mind was going into a really dark place back there. Glad it was not the case :+1:

No worries, I can see how the way I phrased it could’ve led to confusion. No harm done!

Here with another progress update!

Bad ending achieved (I savestated in 21, so I’m going to do my ‘canon’ path tonight and get the true ending.

Definitely feels a bit rushed, but I’m pretty sure that’s intentional.

As for 21 itself…

You were right, the person who had ‘In the Name of Bern’ as their personal battle theme was VERY fitting.

I’m really glad I chose to use Mieu, and not just as a joke. She might have the defenses of a paper bag, but she’s already capped strength, speed, and luck, and will cap skill in a few levels (assuming the RNG is kind to her.)

I started using Jahn from chapter 1 as a joke, not thinking I’d use any manakete/dragon characters, but…

Summary

I really love Jahn’s character development in this story. He and Mieu are A-ranked support buddies, and the convo between them in chapter 21 really shows just how far he’s come.

Honestly, I see it as a case of him getting exactly what he thought he wanted, only to find out that… well, sometimes it isn’t a good thing to see your wishes fulfilled.

Might share more thoughts on 22 later, I kinda speed-ran it since I was going for the bad ending. Will share more thoughts once I play it seriously.

Summary

The Prince’s Despair was unexpected, but also extremely fitting for Guinivere. More like ‘The Princess’s Despair’ in this case. RIP Guinivere, you really tried your best.

Can you give me spoiler for both the bad ending and good ending please. Pretty please

I haven’t done the good ending yet.

Do you not want to play this game? I’d rather not spoil it for anybody. It’s definitely worth playing.

I want to play it but a little spoiler won’t hurt me. It just make me want to play it even more to experience it myself. So please spoil me when you are done

Chapter 22 convos (well, my favorite two):

Summary

That Ein/Idunn conversation was… strangely heartwarming. And as subtle as it was from the start, it’s really nice to see that Idunn’s developing her own feelings beyond Zephiel’s control.

Morgan/Sigune: You’re… a complicated man, Morgan. But not an evil one. Here’s hoping Echidna sparing you all that time ago counts for something in the end. If only for her sake. As for Sigune… well, there have been hints here and there (especially in this chapter and ch 21) that she has a heart. I honestly hope she has a happy ending.

I never gave it any thought prior to starting this game, but you’ve done an amazing job at taking one-shot, one-note villains/bosses and making them believable (and in some cases, sympathetic or even likable.) Kudos to you for that, the characters are one of my favorite things in this game!

I didn’t have much room to edit the endings with my limited hacking skills. I basically could only modify the dialogue, and in vanilla the bad ending is just a single cutscene, so I couldn’t do much with it.

Spoilers go here

I do love how Jahn’s become the hack’s most popular character when I had absolutely no idea what to do with him at the beginning. He certainly has come a long way.

For curiosity’s case, what was your initial guess for Guinivere’s battle theme?

More spoilers go here

Pretty sure you’ve already updated your ROM, since you mention Sigune’s chapter 21 convo, but since v1.15 Morgan has one more convo in chapter 22 to fully wrap up his character. Nothing you can’t infer from his Sigune convo and his ending, but I love Morgan, so I wanted to write a bit more with him haha.

Really happy that you’ve enjoyed what I did with the characters! Honestly, at this point I’ve almost come to see my inability to write supports as a blessing in disguise. The optional convos left me much more freedom to write stuff.

First spoiler

Summary

Honestly I thought she’d have Zephiel’s theme 'Battle for Whose Sake. Though in my defense I didn’t predict there would be any FE8 music transplanted in. Should’ve seen that coming seeing as there’s already a small but noticeable amount of FE7 tracks in.

Other spoiler

Summary

Do you mean chapter 23 (The Ghosts of Lycia?) The excel guide in the current google drive link says that Morgan’s only ch 22 convo is with Sigune. He and Mieu did have a very powerful conversation in the following chapter though. Was that what you’re referring to?

Ah yeah, sorry, I meant chapter 23. Got my numbers mixed up. I have a bad memory for chapter numbers haha.

And that’s game! Hat’s off to you, SaintRubenio. It was a hell of a ride.

This is going to be one FE fan project that sticks in my mind for a long time. That’s an incredibly impressive feat, considering that this is a game using the FE6 engine, and has little to no ‘modern’ enhancements/improvements that are common in most projects these days.

From gameplay alone, this would be an okay game. The concept of playing as various one-shot bosses from FE6 would be an appealing novelty. The maps aren’t anything new, but it’s a fun challenge trying them with completely different characters than I’m used to. Difficulty felt about the same as regular FE6, except for chapter 8. I think that was the only one I really struggled on.

But this isn’t an ‘okay’ game. It’s a great game. And the fact that I feel like it deserves that rating purely from the quality of writing alone is incredible. Seriously, I know a lot of people these days might feel like FE6’s graphics/gameplay are a bit dated by current standards, but holy crap this game needs to be played by anyone who’s played The Binding Blade.

Honestly, I started playing this thinking that it was a joke, like a parody or something (boy, I lost that notion quick.) And I’m super glad that I stuck with it. This isn’t a happy story. In fact, it’s probably the darkest, bleakest Fire Emblem game I’ve played, and that’s saying a lot considering that I’ve played every single main series game (not counting FE1 and FE3, but I played their DS remakes.) Story-wise it’s also the bleakest fan game I’ve played… and boy I’ve done a lot of them.

But even when things seemed impossibly dark and grim, I kept going. Because I wanted to see how the story would go. I’d grown attached to my ragtag band of murderers, war criminals, traitors, and other assorted evildoers. And progressing through the game and viewing all the conversations showed me that some of them… weren’t so evil after all.

Moving on from the plot itself…

The quality of writing in the story itself isn’t just fantastic- the bonus conversations you wrote in lieu of support conversations really fleshed out the cast. Some of the conversations were silly or outright goofy. Some were sad or even a little depressing. And others were even uplifting or heartwarming.

Specific, super-spoilery details below about my thoughts for most characters and there (long) endings. I will freely admit that I looked in the spoiler folder for these, but hey- I finished the game first so does that really count as them being spoilers?

Summary

Wow, Mieu really did end becoming the ‘hero of another story.’ Good for her. I’m glad I a-ranked her and Jahn. His character development was honestly even more fascinating to watch then Idunn’s. Dying in the epilogue was a bit sad, but fitting for him.

And I’m really glad that Idunn had a happy end in the end. She deserves to live in peace.

My man Tick survived it all, good for him. He was in my army as soon as I got him, and while none of my units were 20/20 fighters, he was one of several who were something like 20/15.

Morgan… I guess Echidna can rest easy, knowing that you made good on your promise to do right by the souls of all the people you wronged. Here’s to the spear of hope.

I’m glad Sigune lived too. More so that she had a happy ending… or at least, one that couldn’t be called a tragic end. I guess that’s fitting for her.

Surprised that Flaer lived, but… good for him. I’m glad that he went on to live a peaceful live.

The fact that Kel survived is nothing short of dramatic irony. Though he never struck me as being (totally) evil, so… I guess that’s not a bad thing.

Nord lives on, even in death! You cannot stop the nightmare!

Poor Mary… one of the few character endings I consider a true tragedy. Let us hope the story of Mary and Mieu does not become a parallel to the siblings Zephiel and Guinivere…

Slater… his ending was a surprise, but a welcome one. Much like Flaer, I’m glad to see a one-note villain like him find both redemption and peace.

Dammit Orlo. I guess mankind needs a new enemy to fight against now that Zephiel’s gone. Sequel with Orlo and Mary as the bad guys when? Ahem Ignore that, I’m just joking. Here’s hoping Orlo gets what’s coming to him offscreen.

On a lesser note, Arcardo was more interesting than I thought he’d be. He never made amends, but he definitely came to regret his actions.

As for Trimier… is she a non-FE character? I genuinely don’t recognize who she is.

The one regret I have is that Zephiel’s death happened off-screen, but I’m pretty sure that’s a limit of the FE6 engine.

Other miscellaneous thoughts:

Summary

So I guess you’re following the idea that Ninian was Roy’s mother. Hmm… I think that’s what most people consider canon to FE7. As well as Roy x Lilina being a thing (or it would’ve if Zephiel hadn’t put a stop to that.) It’s extremely fitting to the story, even I’m biased against it (Roy x Cecilia for the win!)

One other thing that’s been stuck in my head… Is there a way to view each unit’s endgame comments? Like in FEbuilder or something (I mean the one to two line comment that each unit has when you deploy them in Into the Darkness.) FE6 was always kind of weird in that you’re locked into using whoever you fielded in chapter 24.

Yes, you can find them in the death quote section

Well, this has got to be the highest praise this has received so far.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this post. I truly appreciate it.

Haha, don’t feel bad - that’s what the folder’s there for!

Some responses

Fun fact: Idunn is the only character with whom I got some mileage out of FE6’s ending system. Since she’s force-deployed in the true ending and you can only see shortened epilogues in the bad ending, her shortened epilogue says she died at Zephiel’s side instead. Wasn’t able to shake off Zephiel’s influence without the things she witnessed at the Dragon Sanctuary.

Eyyy another Tick user in the wild! My first playtester grew super fond of him, and ever since he’s grown on me as well. I always thought he was the kind of character nobody would bother with, so it’s nice to hear more folks giving the dude a chance. He may not be the flashiest member of the army, but well, he’s also not an evil bastard.

Okay that’s a way cooler title than the one I came up with for Morgan. Oh well. Don’t be surprised if his title happens to change in the next patch

Haha, well, I won’t lie, I’ve toyed with the idea. I don’t know if I’d make it, and if I did it would probably take a long time, but hey. It’s food for thought, if nothing else. The way I framed the epilogues is pretty sequel-baity, I’ll admit.

Well… Yes, but with an asterisk. She’s a boss from Berwick Saga. If you’re not aware, that’s one of the games the creator of FE, Shouzou Kaga, made after leaving Intelligent Systems. It’s also one of my favorite games of all time, so I figured I’d acknowledge it here in some way.

She’s like Roberts in her game, zero dialogue or context for her existence, and considering very few people playing this would recognize her, I figured I’d get super meta with her, make her even more befuddling.

Truth be told, I’m not super invested in the ship, but as I was writing the whole scenario at the end it hit me that it would line up a lot better if Zephiel’s final enemy was a human with dragon blood. He embodies everything Zephiel destroyed in Arcadia. And it gives me a half-decent excuse for the presence of manaketes in the final chapters.

If you don’t mind, would you post your endgame team’s stats? I’m always curious to see people’s choices.

Summary

That’s an excellent point about Roy. And I’ll have to look into playing Berwick Saga (and possibly the previous game. TearRing Saga, I think? Not sure how to go about acquiring them though.

And an interesting bit of trivia about Idunn’s long vs short endings. Glad I went for the true ending!

Endgame team below!

Summary

All screenshots are from the final turn of chapter 25: Into the Darkness.

Eckesachs-2
The mad king himself. Excellent unit all around (as befitting of him), became broken with Eckesachs.

Eckesachs-3
Didn’t think I’d get as much use out of him as I would, but I grew to love him. It helped that he was super useful in the early game, and remained a consistently solid unit throughout mid-late game.

Eckesachs-5
The dark priestess herself. She really hit her skill growth hard, capping it only a few levels after promoting, and her high accuracy ensured that pretty much every attack from her landed. I wanted to use Perez, but… sorry, man. Idunn overshadowed you in pretty much every way. Oh, right. Idunn was also my first promoted unit (everyone in my team promoted at level 20.) It wasn’t till late game that she really started to get magic routinely, but once she got close to capping magic… she was pretty unstoppable. She’s holding Tiena’s staff, btw, hence the bonuses to mag, skill, and speed.

Eckesachs-8
Ugh… Brunnya. I wanted to like you, I really did. But you were just… weirdly lopsided. You always hit, but you didn’t have the power Zephiel did or the speed Idunn did. Didn’t help that you had poor defenses even magically. That health of hers comes from a seraph robe, by the way. But even without it I guess she would’ve been at 49 health at level 13. So you had great health and skill, but… I always found you lacking in other regards.
Eckesachs-9
MAKE SOME NOISE for the man, the myth, the legend! Somehow managed to conserve Gant’s lance all this time, and it became a great fit for him in the endgame. Tick + Killer Weapon = lot of dead enemies. I think my load-out for him in chapter 24-25 was Gant’s lance, Killer Edge(2), and Killer Spear. Didn’t have as much health as I would’ve liked, and I gave him at least one dracoshield, but still a phenomenal unit all around.
Eckesachs-4
First hero I’ve had in a while to not cap at least one of strength, skill, or speed. But who cares? Henning was so balanced at all of them that it evened out. The crazy high luck and high physical defense only solidified him as one of my top units. He did take some investment, though, as I put at least one energy ring (might’ve been 2) into him, plus one of the dracoshields.
Eckesachs-6
Roartz… You were a scumbag, but you were a useful scumbag. I should note that capped skill/def combo is all him, no dracoshields or skill books needed. His high hit rates and defense made him a surprisingly great early game unit (I’m pretty sure I remember him hard carrying my team on Chapter 8: Bitter Parting. Recipient of a single energy ring.
Eckesachs-7
I don’t think I really invested any stat booster into Galle. He was a pretty consistently solid unit, even if his presence in the story just got more and more depressing. Should’ve joined Melady when you could’ve, my dude.
Eckesachs-10
“If God had wanted you to live, he would not have placed you in my path.” That about sums up Mieu. I guess you could say she was training to take out the one target that mattered most. Received the body ring, plus a seraph robe. The strength, skill, speed, and luck are all her.
Eckesachs-11
Mitan… I wish she was a bit better than she was, but she was still a very consistenly good unit from join till endgame. Received… I don’t remember, honestly. Definitely at least one speedwings, and probably a skill book too. If I had any leftover dracoshields that weren’t already spent on other characters, it would’ve gone to her.

Honorable mention!
A couple of characters who weren’t in my endgame team, but were definite contenders.

Eckesachs-12
The Ivory Devil herself. Good all the way through, no investment needed. Her con being higher than the usual GBA pegasus knights you get also really helped her out.
Eckesachs-13
Thoril… Meh. That’s about it. When I got the two Djute nomads early on, I flipped a coin, picked him, and rolled with it. He was basically there to open chests. Never a frontline fighter, but could do some damage with a killer bow, at least.
Eckesachs-14
Scott… you were… a weird berserker. Though I suppose capping skill instead of strength fits more with your character/personality than being another roided-out strength-focused berserker. I did sink one or two speedwings into him, though, so he required some investment to go from ‘good unit’ to ‘great unit.’
Eckesachs-15
Pheros… The only reason I didn’t bring you to the endgame is because you simply didn’t have the damage output that Brunnya or Idunn did. Other than that, you were a fantastic unit.
Eckesachs-16
Kel easily could’ve been my Durandal-user, but Henning won out because I just liked his character more. Solid sword user as soon as I got him, remained good for the rest of the game. The high con for a swordmaster definitely helped him out, too. Not much else to say.

If I got the numbers on uses of stat boosters wrong… I’m going off of memory, so they might not be totally accurate on who got what.
