And that’s game! Hat’s off to you, SaintRubenio. It was a hell of a ride.
This is going to be one FE fan project that sticks in my mind for a long time. That’s an incredibly impressive feat, considering that this is a game using the FE6 engine, and has little to no ‘modern’ enhancements/improvements that are common in most projects these days.
From gameplay alone, this would be an okay game. The concept of playing as various one-shot bosses from FE6 would be an appealing novelty. The maps aren’t anything new, but it’s a fun challenge trying them with completely different characters than I’m used to. Difficulty felt about the same as regular FE6, except for chapter 8. I think that was the only one I really struggled on.
But this isn’t an ‘okay’ game. It’s a great game. And the fact that I feel like it deserves that rating purely from the quality of writing alone is incredible. Seriously, I know a lot of people these days might feel like FE6’s graphics/gameplay are a bit dated by current standards, but holy crap this game needs to be played by anyone who’s played The Binding Blade.
Honestly, I started playing this thinking that it was a joke, like a parody or something (boy, I lost that notion quick.) And I’m super glad that I stuck with it. This isn’t a happy story. In fact, it’s probably the darkest, bleakest Fire Emblem game I’ve played, and that’s saying a lot considering that I’ve played every single main series game (not counting FE1 and FE3, but I played their DS remakes.) Story-wise it’s also the bleakest fan game I’ve played… and boy I’ve done a lot of them.
But even when things seemed impossibly dark and grim, I kept going. Because I wanted to see how the story would go. I’d grown attached to my ragtag band of murderers, war criminals, traitors, and other assorted evildoers. And progressing through the game and viewing all the conversations showed me that some of them… weren’t so evil after all.
Moving on from the plot itself…
The quality of writing in the story itself isn’t just fantastic- the bonus conversations you wrote in lieu of support conversations really fleshed out the cast. Some of the conversations were silly or outright goofy. Some were sad or even a little depressing. And others were even uplifting or heartwarming.
Specific, super-spoilery details below about my thoughts for most characters and there (long) endings. I will freely admit that I looked in the spoiler folder for these, but hey- I finished the game first so does that really count as them being spoilers?
Summary
Wow, Mieu really did end becoming the ‘hero of another story.’ Good for her. I’m glad I a-ranked her and Jahn. His character development was honestly even more fascinating to watch then Idunn’s. Dying in the epilogue was a bit sad, but fitting for him.
And I’m really glad that Idunn had a happy end in the end. She deserves to live in peace.
My man Tick survived it all, good for him. He was in my army as soon as I got him, and while none of my units were 20/20 fighters, he was one of several who were something like 20/15.
Morgan… I guess Echidna can rest easy, knowing that you made good on your promise to do right by the souls of all the people you wronged. Here’s to the spear of hope.
I’m glad Sigune lived too. More so that she had a happy ending… or at least, one that couldn’t be called a tragic end. I guess that’s fitting for her.
Surprised that Flaer lived, but… good for him. I’m glad that he went on to live a peaceful live.
The fact that Kel survived is nothing short of dramatic irony. Though he never struck me as being (totally) evil, so… I guess that’s not a bad thing.
Nord lives on, even in death! You cannot stop the nightmare!
Poor Mary… one of the few character endings I consider a true tragedy. Let us hope the story of Mary and Mieu does not become a parallel to the siblings Zephiel and Guinivere…
Slater… his ending was a surprise, but a welcome one. Much like Flaer, I’m glad to see a one-note villain like him find both redemption and peace.
Dammit Orlo. I guess mankind needs a new enemy to fight against now that Zephiel’s gone. Sequel with Orlo and Mary as the bad guys when? Ahem Ignore that, I’m just joking. Here’s hoping Orlo gets what’s coming to him offscreen.
On a lesser note, Arcardo was more interesting than I thought he’d be. He never made amends, but he definitely came to regret his actions.
As for Trimier… is she a non-FE character? I genuinely don’t recognize who she is.
The one regret I have is that Zephiel’s death happened off-screen, but I’m pretty sure that’s a limit of the FE6 engine.

Summary
So I guess you’re following the idea that Ninian was Roy’s mother. Hmm… I think that’s what most people consider canon to FE7. As well as Roy x Lilina being a thing (or it would’ve if Zephiel hadn’t put a stop to that.) It’s extremely fitting to the story, even I’m biased against it (Roy x Cecilia for the win!)
One other thing that’s been stuck in my head… Is there a way to view each unit’s endgame comments? Like in FEbuilder or something (I mean the one to two line comment that each unit has when you deploy them in Into the Darkness.) FE6 was always kind of weird in that you’re locked into using whoever you fielded in chapter 24.
