[FE8] [WIP] Fire Emblem: The Dark Path

Hello!

I have been working on my first romhack for quite a while, and I thought it was finally time to post it here on FEuniverse! This hack is a work in progress and has 5 chapters ready to be played. All feedback, be it critisism or praise will be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure about the exact number yet, but when complete, it will be around 19-21 chapters long.

I recommend you play on normal for now, as I have been balancing around that. I have not touched the other modes yet so I’m not sure if those are good.

Let’s get into some details!

About the Creation of this hack

You may have heard of or played a romhack called Fire Emblem The Phantom King. When I did the final play testing of my brother @RandomMercenary ‘s romhack “The Phantom King” it inspired me to make my own romhack. After beating the game, I already had a lot of story and world ideas going around in my head, but I also really liked the intricate world building present in The Phantom King. So I thought it would be a fun idea to connect the story and world of my romhack to that of The Phantom King. So with @RandomMercenary’s permission, I did exactly that.

To be clear, this is a standalone story and is not a sequel or anything to The Phantom King. So while it’s not necessary to play it before you play my hack, I would really appreciate it if you do. I also think it will enhance the experience of this hack at least a little bit. And also, It’ll be a while until this hack is fully complete so you’ll have plenty of time to play The Phantom King if you haven’t already :wink:. And if you have played it already, well uh… I hope you’ll enjoy this one too!

Extra context:

It has been about 4 years since I started working on this project. Yeah, I know. It’s a long time for only 5 chapters. But a lot of that time has been spent learning febuilder and everything that comes with making a custom romhack. Even though there’s always things to learn, I feel like at this point I am “fluent” in FEGBA romhacking and have built a foundation from where I can keep working on it. That is to say, I probably won’t take 12 more years to complete this project :sweat_smile:.

I’ve made these 5 chapters as polished as I could, and am already well into developing the next 6. So, no promises, but I hope I can provide the next update within a year from now.

Story

On an Island inhabited by various tribes, generations of peace have been halted by a few tribes who, with unknown motivations, start a seemingly coordinated attack on the Nagang alliance: an alliance formed by the four original tribes. Could their archenemy: the Gagak tribe be behind it? Or is it not that simple?

The story follows Chief of the Beruang tribe’s son, Sabar

A timid boy who is unsure of his abilities to be the next chief of the Beruang. Even so, he is pushed to his limits when his father takes him along to stop the attacking tribes.

Along the way he meets a mysterious traveler from a foreign land.

Holding an ominous looking sword, this righteous young man seems to be looking for someone, and is very determined to do so.

The two end up helping eachother only by chance, and that is where a friendship starts to grow. While they learn more about eachother, they must figure out what’s happening with the hostile tribes and try to bring back peace to the island.

Mechanics
  • Capturing enemies like in FE5

  • No money. Because of lore reasons (they trade materials and don’t have a currency), so capturing is essential!

  • Promoted class branches like standard FE8 (see class chart in “Helpful Information”)

  • Every playable unit has a personal skill

  • Every base and promoted class has a player-only skill
  • Weapon ranks are fixed. They’re class based and don’t grow

  • All mounted classes have canto+ (including enemies), but weaker stats and lower weapon ranks than foot-locked classes.

  • Different conversations when certain units have died.

  • Frequent chapter-based context sensitive conversations between units.
  • Support level may go up after one of these chapter-based convos.

There will be more to the worldmap than you can see right now, but this is the only part that’s important for the current version of this hack. It’s also not final, but it will roughly look like this

Class Promotion chart:

These are all the (player) classes in the game right now. I will add more classes in future updates. When choosing between promotion branches, the game will tell you which weapons, ranks and skills you will get before choosing.

Known Issues
  • Glitchy portraits when trading with captured enemies. For some enemies (like pirate) it doesn’t happen, but I haven’t figured out how to make it work properly all the time yet. Doesn’t affect gameplay at all, but it still looks ugly.

Just started the game and umm

The game hangs

As a matter of effect, this entire first sequence is really not working. Trying to use the Start button to skip just brings me to a black screen.

I’m playing on the mobile emulator MyBoy. I’ll try to see if the issue persists on Desktop too.

Edit: kinda works on desktop (Mgba). I can get to the next section of dialogue, but the game crashes soon after the “Player Start” pops up. Restarting doesn’t fix it.

Oof that’s pretty bad. I use vba emulator for testing and this never happened. I’ll see if I can fix this.

New version is up!

I fixed the issue for mGBA. The problem was the autocursor, because you don’t start with the main lord in this chapter. I simply installed the autocursor fix patch and it worked!

Also, I just found out that apparently vba isn’t the best emulator to use for play testing. So I will keep it in mind from now on.

As for the crash with myboy, I still don’t know what causes that. I’ll see what I can do about it, but for now I suggest you play with mGBA (or vba if you have that too). I’ll probably do another test run myself but with mGBA to see if there’s anything else broken.

Edit: I just realised that by fixing this issue I unknowingly fixed another issue that I already knew of. Neat! It’s this one: ‘If the prologue is suspended and then resumed, it will have various visual glitches and becomes unplayable.’ I guess I can remove that one from known issues now.

So will there also be standard support conversations or will they only rise through these talk conversations in chapters? If so will there still be a support list?

They’re not in the game right now, but I will probably do those too later down the line.

Are you also using the My Boy emulator?

Okay! The issue with MyBoy should be fixed. It was a redundant event command that really shouldn’t have been there. Version 0.1.2 is in the dropbox now. Hopefully it will at least be playable beyond second 1 of gameplay now :sweat_smile:

Okay I played though chapter 1 now, and I have some things to say and ask now.

I really like the presentation so far, between the portraits and the palettes chosen. Gives the hack a “rustic” tone, which goes well with the more tribal setting. Which is by itself pretty unique, I don’t think any, or at least not many, hacks choose this kind of setting.

In particular, I’m interested in where this building comes from. I’ve never seen it in any other project.

Gameplay

Very nice, very simple and easy. It’s an interesting choice to make us use a supportive prepromote, while letting the two spearfighters fight by themselves, while the other playable is by herself. Good prologue.

Smart way to introduce the capture mechanic, giving us an easy target and prompt to do so. But the spear we get is really lackluster, I hope there’s better options later.

Finally, maybe it would be good to make it clear the boss won’t move? Either by changing it’s movement or with him saying he will only observe. A personal nitpick really, feel free to ignore.

I’m excited to keep playing. This is a very promising project.

Edit: Actually, which difficulty is the intended choice? I’m playing on normal right now.

The building:

That building is based on traditional Indonesian houses (which is what the setting of this hack is based on). As for who made it: little old me. As a ‘not at all experienced spriter’, I definetly made things a little harder for myself by choosing this setting because most things in the graphics repository (as well as any Fire Emblem game ever) are medieval europe inspired. So I do my best to find stuff that roughly fits the setting I use, and if there’s something I really want, but doesn’t exist on there, I guess I’ll have to make it myself.

The spear:

Yeah I agree. It was supposed to be a weaker option, but honestly while I was play testing, I found myself really not wanting to use it because it’s just that useless. I guess I never thought about buffing it. So I will make it a little better, but still keeping it as a weaker option. Just not as terrible as it is right now. And of course there will be better 1-2 range spears later in the game.

The boss:

I thought he had the 0 move boss AI, but apparently not? I guess it doesn’t really matter because the green units would suicide into him regardless. But extra clarity is always nice, and I can easily change this, so I will

I’ve just completed chapter 3.

Chapter 2 (“review/nitpick” portion)

In regards to gameplay, the chapter was fine. Not too difficult, but with all the frail trainees around, I still had to pay a lot of attention.

The thing that I couldn’t get out of my head was the lost opportunity for Gameplay-Story integration around Reva.

Despite her boasting at the start of the chapter, and her own brother saying she’s “stronger than him” in the ending scene, she’s essentially worse than him. She has Paragon, sure, but that’s a skill meant to signify potential (something that is more linked to Sabar, in fact) while her base stats and Growths are mediocre to bad.

With a con of 5, she gets slowed down to absolute zero speed while holding her iron spear (wt 9). I think she should have just a few more points in key stats (Str,Def) or at least get a considerable lead in Skill (3 or more) over her brother, to show the results of her training.

Something I have to praise is the Jeigan father

He’s very useful for training the weaker units and also cleaning up harder enemies. Having a weapon with mercy is perfect for preparing kills, and you can even use mercy with other weapons, provided the axe is equipped first before attacking.

Also being a bow user with bulk mean he can attract hits away from the frailer units. Very good job with him.

Chapter 2 (typos,Miscellaneous)

Should be “Daughter” instead of Daugther.

“Worship” instead of Whorship.

Good to see Orson found a new calling after Sacred Stones.

Movement range shows she moves, but She’s stationery instead.

Shouldn’t Budi leave his items in the supply before leaving? Does he come back with this exact inventory, and that’s why he brings them with him?

I actually like the choice of only doing the “Continent Overview” thing after two chapters, instead of doing it at the start.

Chapter 3 (Promotions)

I want to talk a bit about these first few promotion of the trainees.

(Not depicted in the images: Horserider gets +3 con, Spearfighter gets +0)

Horserider: +2 magic seems like a really weird, and really useless bonus? I think it’s better to add an extra point in defense instead. Makes the horserider the “mobile but weaker, yet reliable choice”, in opposition to Spearfighter’s supposed greater raw battle power.

Spearfighter: I’d ask you add +1 point to both the str and skill bonus. Spearfighter already loses a ton of Mobility, doesn’t get any con (still -4 speed from iron spears, yay) and her higher spear rank is only as useful as the enemies inventory allow it to be. Clear unbalance between the choices.

(Swordfighter gets Diah from 7 con to 10 con, Myrmidon gets her 0 extra con)

Wtf. What do I even say? just look at this. Swordfighter gets a worse skill, lesser sword rank, and three overall less stat point than Myrmidon. The 3 points In con are NOT that crazy bro :sob:

Chapter 3 (Review)

Nicely done chapter. The great amount of enemies appearing in the middle section of the map gave me a scared, but they Shawn far enough to not be an actual ambush.

Namira came close to dying multiple times, but the enemies would always miss enough that she could heal right back up. Her partner had even less trouble staying alive, so you did a good job with the both of them.

Overall, a pretty good chapter. A decent chance to try out the (hopefully) promoted trainees and see the skills of the new characters as well.

Chapter 3 (New Units)

Kinda bad tbh. As one of the three units with decent aid (particularly, the only one that can feasibly capture axe enemies) she feels lackluster. Her hit rate stands between 50-60 against the axe units she tries to capture, and she doesn’t do to much damage regardless. Considerably slower than my trainees too.

'“Oh boy, another trainee”. Not much to say, her skill is kinda useful? Thematically appropriate for sure.

Definitely the superior bow unit given this chapter. Her skill and speed Growths are kinda insane in comparison to everyone else, and 30% str is still better than the sword lady.

Didn’t get a chance to really use him. Better than Devi for sure.

Chapter 3 (Bugs?/Miscellaneous)

Talking to a unit ends the unit’s turn, which is weird in a hack with infinite Trade and Supply commands.

Somehow didn’t notice this in the previous chapter, the MC can’t be rescued? I tried it with multiple characters, yet none could rescue him.

Sabar saying his sister is ‘stronger than him’ was more about him being insecure than her actually being that strong. Given they’re both very young, potential was kind of the theme I was going with. But maybe I can do something about it to make it more clear. And also because she’s 14 and he’s 16. She’s just strong for her age, and she’s a physical unit while Sabar uses magic.

I guess this was me trying to make the difference bewteen mounted units and footlocked units bigger. But now that I look at it, she’s worse than lvl 1 Franz while at lvl 4 :grimacing: . So I will definetly buff her a little. I also think that maybe the stat difference between horses and infantry shouldn’t be that important, because I think the horses low weapon rank might already be a pretty big nerf.

Budi’s Items (Fixed)

I’ve actually been wanting to do this, but I just don’t know how. I also want to do that with Dumadi because he’ll probably be capturing a lot in that chapter, and then you just lose all your ̶s̶t̶o̶l̶e̶n̶ hard earned weapons. Until I find a solution, I should just make the game tell the player that they leave after this chapter, but that might make the player think he’s gonna die because… well… you know, FE dad

Edit: fixed. I tried looking for a patch before and couldn’t find it. Turns out I used all the wrong search words when checking the pacthes.

Continent overview scene

I always think it’s a bit too much information when at the start, before you’re even invested in anything yet. For me it often results in immediately forgetting most of it, but it might just be a ‘me’ problem. I recently played FE9 for the first time and I liked that it did the same thing but after like 6 chapters.

Promotions

I haven’t really looked into the promotion gains from trainees to base classes too much, so that might be why they’re a bit whack. Thanks for the tip. I will try and balance this better. Also a lot of bad unit balancing is probably a product of me being too scared that I accidentally make an overpowered unit that breaks the game in half lol. I should probably focus a bit more on making them fun to use.

And why the MC can’t be rescued I have no clue. I noticed it earlier too, but I have legit no idea what causes it. I’m gonna try to fix this asap

Maybe i should’ve considered the characters ages more when talking about stats. I’m too used to seeing small children destroying armies.
