[FE8] [WIP] Fire Emblem: The Dark Path

True. They probably will be doing that at the end of the game.

Just completed chapter 4. I think there’s enough stuff to talk about in this chapter that it warrants it’s own post. Plus some stuff I forgot to mention previously.

Chapter 4 (“Previously, On DBZ”)

How are class skills supposed to work? Are they supposed to be level up based, or just from being in the class?

This is Devi in the very first chapter. You can see she already has her class skill, “Reposition”.

This is Buana at the end of chapter 4. Despite getting from (level 3 I think) to level 5, he still doesn’t have reposition. (Buff these two’s luck stats, please. I was already getting 2% of crit ON him in this chapter)

With Kulon and Namira it’s the same. The trainees seem to get the proper abilities once promoted, with the exception of Varuni, but her… “case”, is kinda fucked regardless.

Also, typo in the ending scene of chapter 3

“From” not "Form”.

Chapter 4 (Promotion, Singular)

Good promotion. Maybe one more point in Skill, but good enough for him.

This, however, is kinda weird. He doesn’t have the rank, nor any sort of “Shadowgift” skill that would allow him the use of demon magic. The Sol skill works properly though.

Chapter 4 (Review)

It’s a very well done chapter. Was thinking it was just gonna be a boring pirate slaughterfest, to the point where I was gonna suggest changing the objective to routing, but I was pleasantly surprised by the northwest reinforcements.

These “sword wielding, axe wielding” Pirates are a cool idea.

Same goes for these Shaman. “Light" magic instead of dark, and swords, that can be interpreted as knifes for ritual sacrifice and stuff. Very cool.

Didn’t care much for the Malig Knights wannabes. Especially since they didn’t actually have dark magic. Didn’t even bother taking a screenshot of them.

About the “Indah finds a talisman” event, I think you should change the tile to get the talisman.

Either of these places, where my cursor is pointing, would be better. Making the dedicated healer stay so far behind is really bad for pacing. These new places would still make it out of the way, but not to the point of breaking pace.

About the Talk events, I suggest adding a text box at the start of every chapter to tell which characters have a talk, especially considering they might only be started by one of the characters on a pair.

Chapter 4 (New units)

Please buff him. I think he also should start already on level 3 or something, with appropriate higher stats. In particular, his 11 speed is very frustrating in this chapter, since most of the Pirates have 8 speed with no weight down.

(Taken on chapter 5, but I’m not sure he even got a level)

This is what is called overkill. There’s no need for his luck stat to literally start out at zero. It’s important to remember Luck also affects Crit Dodge, and few people are gonna like a MC that constantly has to deal with low crit chances. otherwise he’s meh. Also he lacks his supposed Lunge skill.

Chapter 4 (Bug/ Singular typo I found)

This guy as a whole. His Leadership Star continues working after death, and he stays a part of the enemy list. Really weird.

Again, “From” not “Form”. That autocorrect has to go, lol.

You wouldn’t believe how often the ‘form = ‘ from’ typo happens to me. I just try to type too fast for my own good :upside_down_face:

Class skills

They’re supposed to be for being in the class. But with how the skill systems patch works, that would mean you’d lose them on promotion, and enemies would have the skill too. To circumvent this I made them player only and obtained at lvl 1. Only problem is that Buana, Namira and Alvin start as Npc units. And they already are lvl 1 and passed the opportunity to obtain the skills. I only noticed this problem 2 days ago so I already fixed this problem. I just gave them the skills as a personal skill.

Talk events

You’re right about that talisman placement. When I made the map, the little beach path was just for show, but it looked suspicious to me so I thought I’d do something with it. It was kinda a attempt at the fe4 ‘Lex’s braveaxe secret’. But I agree it shouldn’t be this tedious

I’ve also been trying to think of an ‘elegant’ way to make it clearer who has talk events. Still working on that.

Sabar’s lie

Whoops. I was going back and forth on wether I wanted him to have dark magic or not. Right now the answer is yesn’t

Gerard doesn’t die

He has no death sound when he dies in the cutscene so he is probably not registered as such, hence the leadership stars. I remember I had problems with this but I just forgot about it I guess

Alvin’s bad luck

It kinda has to do with his weapon, but I see your point. I made his luck growth pretty high as a counter balance. One thing to know about him is that he never promotes, but can level up to 40, and gain 4 extra skills from certain levels. Of course I’ll need to see how this all plays out when I have more chapters, but for his starting point I’ll try buffing him a little, since he is supposed to be ‘pretty good’ at that point.

I guess hacking more finicky than I thought. Because of a death sound, something else doesn’t work. Also I called Alvin, but i really just meant his luck.

Oh alright. Yeah getting a game over because of a random (with no crit weapon) enemy crit isn’t fun. I think I might do an opposite approach to his luck in connection with his devil weapon. Maybe he’ll start with high luck but it doesn’t grow? That way the 31 - luck% of the sword’s devil effect could stay at a fixed 20% chance or something like that. His sword also has 10 crit in this version, but I already removed it because him critting himself would make using the sword a little too dangerous. I could even give it a crit debuff, if that’s even possible.

And yeah hacking do be like that sometimes. It’s a scripted battle but for some reason he disappears from the map but doesn’t die after it. I’m still figuring out how to fix it.

Finished chapters 4 and 5, which concludes the current demo. Despite anything I might say, or any bugs found, this game is definitely a worthwhile experience, and I hope you can keep working on it. Now for the chapter specific analyses.

Chapter 4 (Missingno ahh promotion)

This is what happens when Varuni promotes. It skips from this screen straight to the main preparations, with a buggy screen in-between, instead of the stat ups screen or the animation for promotion. The Brigand class also doesn’t actually have Frenzy skill. This is the fucked case I referred to previously. She seems to work normally otherwise.

Chapter 4 (Review)

Not too bad of a FOW map, though I constantly felt like my thief had to move forward too much just so I could see ahead. The abundance of axe enemies helped with that.

This chapter made me realize these Mfers actually had 8 move, and I wasn’t expecting them to come from the east. Almost killed my thief once, but he managed to Dodge somehow. Now, what I find unforgivable…

I didn’t take the picture correctly, but in this image, the soldier, the thief, the horse woman and the lower Spearfighter are all sleeping. Brother why? It literally only serves to waste time. The enemies don’t rush you or anything, they wait till you get in range, so what’s the point of it?

This dumbass can’t even defend themself, what the hell?

I suggest you decrease the Fliers Mov by one, or at least remove the ones over the ocean, and that you make SOME sort of change to the boss’s sleep staff, be it to reduce it’s durability or the amount of turns sleep wastes.

Also, making the Escape point a normal Seize point would work better, I believe.

Chapter 5 (“She was a trainee too?”)

I genuinely thought she was getting 33 XP per heal for no reason lol.

I think this is genuinely the best split promotion in the hack, currently. The mage’s higher speed does more for damage, and Seal Defense is a very useful skill for capturing. Shaman getting a higher Magic stat also makes using staves easier. Too bad it’s one of the victims of “Class skill not found”.

(Could you increase staff xp after tier 0? Something like 15 for heal would be good, considering the lower amount of uses.)

I still can’t shake the feeling the overall promotion bonuses in this game are too lackluster in the face of lower growth rates.

Chapter 5 (Review:The Longest One)

This was a really confusing chapter to me. After you rescue both of the prisoners, reinforcements just start pouring in from the west? I finished in 19 turns, and they were still coming out.

This abundance of enemies makes it practically impossible to actually get the western chests, or the bosses items. I understand this is a “Escape chapter” but the way It’s handled makes it frustrating. I want my chests goddammit.

Speaking of chest, these two were the ones I could open, and yet it’s done in a really annoying way, since only the Thief can open them. I think it would be better if the enemy Thief dropped some Chest keys, instead of more lockpicks. That way I could one of my mounted units to get them.

Now about the enemies themselves

28 atk. 28 attack. These guys were straight up one-shoting my units. And the nosferatu guys don’t help in the slightest. Again, the initial design of the map leads the players to thinking they can advance onwards to the chests in the west. But that’s not feasible.

About the two prisoners themselves, I’ll talk about them as units in another session. But I really think they should get weapons from the Talk events with the other characters. The past 2 chapters barely give any bow user to steal from especially.

This chapter really needs some revisions.

Chapter 5 (Units)
Summary

Kinda meh. Her Skill is really not that great, needing some serious unluckyness to be useful. “Class skill not found”.

Might as well have a nomad triangle attack at this point lol. Interesting skill and decent bases/growths, but he didn’t do anything really, due to a shortage of bows. Highest Con of the three, so that’s something. “Class skill not found”.

Chapter 5 (Typos/Miscellaneous)

I looked it up, and I’m pretty sure it’s “Rescuing” in place of “Rescueing”.

Unless this is a character we haven’t met yet, I think this should say “Banyu” instead.

“Should” go next

“The” and it should have an interrogation mark at the end.

Now for my attempts at humor.

Same energy tbh.

“…You don’t belong in this world!”

Proceeds to stay as a ghost.

Final Team.

This was fun. Thank you.

Varuni promotion

I wanted her to change into two bow classes: Nomad and other class that doesn’t exist yet. Having a 4th nomad would really be too much, and for the other class I just didn’t know what to do with it and couldn’t find a fitting animation for it. I decided it wasn’t worth it and just made her change into two very different existing classes, which is also kinda fun I guess. But this change was very last minute so I probably didn’t check it thouroughly enough. So it’s probably some missing pallettes or something.

Sleep staff / boss can’t fight

I think that’s a very good point. Never really gave it much thought. I just wanted her to have something (long-range) to do besides get attacked and run away at the end. I think I might swap the sleep from ch4 and berserk form ch5 because ch5 has the pressure of the reinforcments.

As for why she can’t attack: no idea. It wasn’t like that last time I tested. It’s probably a weapon rank issue or something. Easily fixable. She was also supposed to have a physic but that’s gone too (unless you stole it with thief)

The attackers form the ocean were hinted at in the opening cutscene, but I suppose I could lower their move a little.

Small sidenote: Indah not getting the skill after promotion is weird because she didn’t start as an npc. I’ll have to look into that.

All of chapter 5

Okay so for clarification: the reinforcements spawn after a certain turn, or earlier when you step in the zone in front of the prison. They are also way overpowered and infinite, so the intention is to run an get the f out of there. Which is also why I lit up their spawn point, so you could see their stats and think “hell no, I ain’t winning that”.

My idea for this chapter was that you have two choices: go right, which is the fastest route because you can get to the prisoners (also kill the thief probably), free them, go back and end the chapter with relative ease and a very few amount of turns. The downside is of course the many chests you’ll miss. So if you don’t really care about them then you can take that approach. The other choice is to go left and around in a circle. This route is longer and has more enemies. This way you can get all the chests but at a higher risk. And I suppose you could also split up and go both ways at the same time.

The problem probably lies with it not being very clear. As the creator I can easily get blinded by… well… not being blind. I know exactly how it all plays out so it all makes sense to me, because I made it. But from a blind player’s perspective it might not be so obvious.

I will try to find a way to make it more clear to the player. And if that doesn’t work out, I could always remove the trigger zone for the reinforcements and just keep it a turn thing so both routes are the same.

And finally, I’ll probably give more chest keys for the enemies to drop.

Units

The 2 chests in front of their ‘cell’ contain what is supposed to be their weapons. I have thought of giving them one via the conversations, but I’m still on the fence on that.

And yeah they were, though very briefly, green skill-less units.

Why are these so hard to remove?

I literally can’t remove this ‘hide text’ thing for some reason.

Nomad triangle attack? Now that sounds pretty funny. I’m definitely doing that

Thank you for playing and all the feedback! Especially about chapter 5 and all the unit balancing/weird mistakes. I really needed those. Looks like there is still a lot to be done. I’m at least glad that there weren’t any more gamebreaking glitches.

Her class just doesn’t have a Demon magic rank I think. Also yeah stole her physic lol.

The small amount of units made me afraid to split up, but it could probably work, since most enemies use axes and stuff. I did notice the reinforcements started right after freeing the prisoners.

Yeah I thought I gave her a personal weapon rank for demon but clearly I didn’t.

Also I think know what to do about the thief in ch5. Either delete him or place him in the left path with the many chests, because right now he baits players who want all the chests into going right, even though they should want to go left.
