[FE8] [WIP] Fire Emblem: Cursed Soul. (The Phantom King's sequel)

Hello, there!
It has been a while.

Welcome to my new project: Cursed Soul.

This one has been in development for quite some time now. But, today I can finally present to you the sequel to “The Phantom King”. Progress on this project has been slow over the years. I started development all the way back in 2020. Yes, I was already working on this before Phantom king’s first release! After Phantom King’s final release I decided to focus on "“Crowns and Thrones” instead of this project. But now after 5 years, I finally have something to show!

I’m not exactly sure yet how long the game will be, but I’m aiming for 30 chapters. Today I release the first 14 chapters.

Story

Well, obviously it is the sequel to “The Phantom King”. And at the same time it is a prequel to “Crowns and Thrones”, but it is more so a sequel to Phantom king.

A lot has changed, 20 years after the events of The Phantom King. Before he died, the Dark king Nymen warned the island of Reglis that he would be back in 20 years. And now those 20 years have passed…
The nobility is paranoid and believes that the dark king might be already among them. The suspect? A whole generation!

But, the kingdoms of Reglis are not only worrying about a threat from the inside. Invaders have been colonizing the east for a few years now. The kingdom of Sountaine has already fallen…
The fearless Marugnatii are slowly conquering Reglis piece by piece!

Story structure:
The chapter progression of this hack is quite something. In “The Phantom King” you controlled two different parties, which the player switched between every chapter. This time around there are not one, not two, not even three different parties to switch between. This hack has a whopping six different parties at the start of the game! A dizzying amount…I know. The six different parties intertwine and merge slowly throughout the story. By the time you reach the endgame chapters you’ll have just one party.

Gameplay

After the big experiment that was Crowns and Thrones, I decided to return to traditional FE gameplay for this project. But, of course there are still quite a few changes from vanilla.

Some basic things:

  • Doubling calculation: The threshold for doubling is 1.
  • Con: Units have very little con. This means weapon weight has a lot of effect on a unit’s speed. Most units have somewhere between 0 and 3 con.
  • No branching promotions.
  • Stats cap at 20.
  • Stat boosters are stat rings instead. They work differently this time. Stat rings basically shuffle your stats around. +5 points of speed means -5 points from other areas like this example below:

    You can mix and match different rings together, because they do stack.

Trying to change the Window Color immediately crashes the game. I’m playing on the MyBoy emulator. Please take a look at it, and if not fixable, I suggest adding a warning in game.

That’s interesting. The Phantom king has this same problem, strangely enough. I’m not sure what causes it. :downcast_face_with_sweat:

I believe this is a bug? She just “raises” her weapon rank one level lower whenever she first attacks an enemy.
