[FE8] Portraits without Java?

So I’m trying to make FE8 Portraits easily and without Java, how would I do that?

To make the portrait: Every Windows machine comes pre-installed with Paint.exe.

To insert the portrait: As far as I know, the only Java-based portrait insertion tool is FEditor Adv, which hasn’t been in wide use for at least 10 years. None of the buildfile tools or FEbuilder use Java to my knowledge.

*cough* Since it has failed to be mentioned, there is also a hackbox somewhere in the repo that’ll be good to use for placement reference.

Any other image editor will also work, though some will likely work better than others for pixel art, or for splices.

I assume the reason Java is brought up is due to the FE Character Creator.

I wouldn’t recommend using it as anything more than a starting point anyway, but if it’s not an option altogether you’ll have to splice manually (which imo is a good skill to learn anyway for starting out). Virtually any image editor that allows for layers can work, though some are better for sprites than others, as mentioned above.

for your convenience

In terms of actually making portraits on your own, there are a bountiful number of tutorials which have been posted here and on other sites to walk you through the process of learning how to create them on your own.
