Just finished my second HM ironman run (and consuming most of pandan’s youtube content), again wanted to say this is the best FE game I’ve played and it has made most other hacks & vanilla games feel pretty bad, at least from a gameplay standpoint.
Though it’ll probably never happen, I can truly imagine this game remade as an actual fire emblem title; technical barriers removed, fully repolished w/ state of the art graphics, and overall sanding of the edges innately present in any romhack. The base level framework, numbers, ideas, etc. is that strong.
This video was great to watch after my 2nd playthrough, good watch for anyone else who loves this game: Fire Emblem Vision Quest - Reflections - YouTube
I thought it was interesting that part 2 was so divisive, I think this part is my favorite as I found it the most difficult (well, I think this depends on how long you hold off on promos), interesting maps, and that mid-game sweet spot.
I’ve said it before but I think you nailed skills, you’re getting the unit feel without making things crazy; you almost can ignore skills until you need to get out of a pinch, which I like.
Tiered effective weapons is interesting. I’m imagining a framework where gameplay changes over the course of the game is almost split into 3; mechanics that scale evenly to the end (i.e. stats), mechanics that are inaccessible until a certain point (i.e. certain characters, classes), and mechanics that scale unevenly to be worse or better (effective weapons). I figure if everything scales evenly, nothing changes, so execution on tiered stuff sounds tricky, but useful nonetheless.
I certainly did notice being able to park my Generals on terrain in the lategame and just lay waste to enemies no matter how many armorslayers. Though, I didn’t find it too bad, it almost felt like it was armor knights time to shine, they weren’t fully indestructible.
I totally get your perspective about handing the lategame to the player in some sense, just finish it up, no need to make it a huge struggle which causes a lot of ppl to stop playing. I like that this was made diegetic; Festan is sort of on his last legs, his will & motive to even fight you is diminished. Though I would have loved one last big defend map similar to Mahala (possibly my favorite map in the game).
