[FE8] [Complete] Fire Emblem: Vision Quest (v3 by Pushwall - 1-Oct-22)

Just finished my second HM ironman run (and consuming most of pandan’s youtube content), again wanted to say this is the best FE game I’ve played and it has made most other hacks & vanilla games feel pretty bad, at least from a gameplay standpoint.

Though it’ll probably never happen, I can truly imagine this game remade as an actual fire emblem title; technical barriers removed, fully repolished w/ state of the art graphics, and overall sanding of the edges innately present in any romhack. The base level framework, numbers, ideas, etc. is that strong.

This video was great to watch after my 2nd playthrough, good watch for anyone else who loves this game: Fire Emblem Vision Quest - Reflections - YouTube

I thought it was interesting that part 2 was so divisive, I think this part is my favorite as I found it the most difficult (well, I think this depends on how long you hold off on promos), interesting maps, and that mid-game sweet spot.

I’ve said it before but I think you nailed skills, you’re getting the unit feel without making things crazy; you almost can ignore skills until you need to get out of a pinch, which I like.

Tiered effective weapons is interesting. I’m imagining a framework where gameplay changes over the course of the game is almost split into 3; mechanics that scale evenly to the end (i.e. stats), mechanics that are inaccessible until a certain point (i.e. certain characters, classes), and mechanics that scale unevenly to be worse or better (effective weapons). I figure if everything scales evenly, nothing changes, so execution on tiered stuff sounds tricky, but useful nonetheless.

I certainly did notice being able to park my Generals on terrain in the lategame and just lay waste to enemies no matter how many armorslayers. Though, I didn’t find it too bad, it almost felt like it was armor knights time to shine, they weren’t fully indestructible.

I totally get your perspective about handing the lategame to the player in some sense, just finish it up, no need to make it a huge struggle which causes a lot of ppl to stop playing. I like that this was made diegetic; Festan is sort of on his last legs, his will & motive to even fight you is diminished. Though I would have loved one last big defend map similar to Mahala (possibly my favorite map in the game).

See, Mahala was one of my least favorites. It’s fascinating to see the different opinions on Part 2. Uh oh, I think it’s time for another playthrough.

dipping my toes in FEbuilder, is there any forseeable issues with removing “Forced Deployment” from all of the characters? I understand forced deployment for diegetic reasons or coaxing ppl into trying out new units, but after a couple runs I’d like to just have full control of deployments for more variety.

Only issue I can imagine would be forgetting to deploy Storch and not being able to end a chapter. I wanted to make it so that anyone can seize, but it sounds like this is not really feasible as seizing is hardcode tied to FE8 base lords or something.

I don’t think so? If you want to mess around for fun, feel free to experiment. If the game breaks, just add it back in.

Seizing is tied to the lord slots, so I’d be wary of not forcing Storch / Waluyo.

To go along with this, without certain patches, the game will flip out at the start of player phase if the character set as the main character isn’t present, unless autocurser is turned off or the map is loaded as a monster skirmish, which nothing in VQ should be.

Do i need to deploy the unit that needs to be alive in order for the gaidens to be unlocked? for example if i do not deploy honeydew but shes still alive at the end of 2-1 would i still get 2-1x?

The game checks if the unit is alive and recruited - so no, you do not need to actively deploy Honeydew to unlock the gaiden, but she is force deployed in 2-1x. Same applies for other gaidens.

Hey, I’m new here and started playing the Hack not that long ago. Gotta say it impressed me very much in many ways, so good job, however with my legendary luck i think i manged to run into a bug, to put it simply i cannot recruit honeydew (I think that’s the name) in 1-9, whenever i wait there and the conversation happens the game just freezes, i mean the music is still going but the rest just stops and if i skip it the screen just goes black. Is there a solution for this? Am i the only one who experienced this?

To give it a little more details: I’m running the game on mGBA 0.9.2 and the method for recruitment has been via the warp staff of Onisim, warping Esfir there to take care of a thief, at first i thought it was because the space honeydew would appear was occupied, but even after killing the thief it would still crash. So i’m thinking that maybe i have to go through the door and take out the mage also? Anyway would really appreciate it if someone could help me out

I think it has to do with an occupied space, but I’d need to see a recording to know for sure. If the space adjacent to the stair tile is occupied, you may have this issue.

IIRC there’s also an event that plays that introduces her - there may be an issue with recruiting her before this event plays? I forget exactly how it is set up.

I had this happen to me I’m pretty positive it has to do with an occupied space, but I remember it was an easy fix just rewinding until I fixed it

I see, when i tried recruiting that tile is usually unoccupied. Anyway thanks, i’ll try a few other things to see if i can bypass this problem and will keep ya posted as I go

Just an update, managed to bypass it and recruit honeydew. Don’t know what was it exactly that worked, if it was a reset or just opening the door and getting rid of the mage there. But i managed to get past it. Again thanks for the replies.

@Pandan So whatever happened to the alleged sequel? Will we forever be left in the dark about a certain eccentric fellow’s heel turn?

I’m trying to do a second run but boy, I feel like I’m just playing worse for forcing myself to give some units more of a spotlight. Freyja in particular. I mean, Gunnar has high res so he can kill of mages and level easily. Cashew joins low level but he has a great prf bow and can just sit back and use said bow to score easy kills on near dead enemies. But Freyja I just decided to fully give up on. She joins at this weird time where it’s hard for an axe user to be reliable cause barely anyone in the other side is using lances and every other axe user has had way more time to just outmatch her. Plus you get so many more axe users that I don’t feel she’s needed.

I wrote about it in the other thread, recommend reading there.

Re: Freyja - yeah it depends on who else you’re using. pretty sure she can double w/ steel bows w/ instapromo. I can see why you’d find her less useful if you’re using Gunnar, Cashew, and other infantry axe users.

What’s the other thread?

I’ve been generally avoiding promoting below level 15. Just a personal preference.

Edit : Thanks for the link @knabepicer , I’ll give it a lookover when I have time.

I accidentally went into Supports on the main menu and noticed they’re all unlocked. So I was looking through a few characters. Kinda unsure how to feel about some of the cast now. I already liked Cassius a lot and his supports make me respect him even more. But Anwen, on the other hand, comes across as just kind of an unsociable woman. Anwen x Radoslav Rank A also confused me with the way it just kind of ends? Nothing really gets resolved, if anything you’d think it’d result in a rank somehow dropping from how the conversation goes.

Summary

Also poor Storch getting rejected left and right by everone except the one Kuching soldier who’s told they’ll meet their soulmate outside of Obrero :o

Oh sweet Jesus she is strong as hell, I gave her kaja jelly and leveled her to 20 and got her to 10 promoted. She is invincible now! Oh, btw I love your hack, this is by far my favorite story someone has created and is it so full of story and there is so much gameplay that isn’t identical it is beautiful . I truly love your hack

Do I have to kill Bromhilda? Does anything happen if I avoid her and let her live?
Also, Sigrid capped all of her stats lol

Hello, does anyone know how many earthals can be found in that game?
