I think the playable IDs aren’t going to be more than the vanilla game. It’s just that the information that populates these IDs (mugshots, growth rates, etc) are being pulled from a resource and injected in.
For a standalone randomizer built into the game it seems a little more tricky, but for standalone randomizing software this info and extra graphics can be stored with the software.
It’s being pulled from a table of characters meaning you are correct the game still has the normal amount of characters it’s just it’s secretly has way more if you were to technically edit it by the fire emblem Builder it will only show the characters that show up in the game. So it’s still stored in the game it’s just stored in extra part of the game that gets the achievement of more characters when in reality you only have the actual characters. That to my knowledge is the reason why the game is not crashing or freaking out it doesn’t know technically that there’s more characters it only knows that there is the characters that are in the game they just get replaced by characters in the table.
I said that because of its objective quality compared to everything else I submitted and everything else that is likely in the game already. You misunderstand a fundamental piece of that statement.

Perhaps they are f2u but I had a chat with @HyperGammaSpaces last week in his server and the portraits are not being included for now.
The chat was much longer, and it led me to leave colours for portraits as their usual ones instead of randomizing the colours by default, so it was a productive chat. I don’t want to include anything without the artist’s blessings, so it’s up to Gamma.
How will this work with Palettes? Will you have to make them all or is that not really a tging in this?
They can! The character table is referenced in hundreds of places, but all you need to convince the player that it’s a different character is to be able to change the name, portrait, stats, and growths. This bring the number of places it’s referenced to just dozens instead of hundreds. This is what I did for the self randomizer to “randomize” the order of recruitment. Internally, it’s still always Eirika as unit id 1, but with a lot of complex code, it displays as someone else. This is not possible to do in your romhack as a standalone feature without including many other self randomizer features (unless you’re a wizard). But the self rando can be installed on most romhacks, so if you wanted extra characters that way, it could be done.
I suppose it’s possible, but palettes hadn’t occurred to me and I think it’d be a lot of work to do. Maybe I’ll think about them eventually, but for now I’m just worrying about the characters. I have some code to debug / optimize for this, and I might add non-fe8 classes into the mix so that Robin could be a tactician, or to include laguz etc… I also want to see if this can work for fe6/7 as well, so we could play any fegba game with any fe character. I might open up submissions for custom characters at some point, too. I think it’s nice to see so much lovely art in one game. I wonder if a custom campaign is possible as a config option… and maybe I could have UI designs as a config… and I haven’t made anything for my code thread lately

Also, I do wanna ask if there are plans to include characters from the Kaga Saga games, FEH and the 4 Cipher DLC characters from Echoes (Randal, Emma, Shade and Yuzu).
I wonder-do the Cipher units from Echoes/the Cipher card game count for their individual realms? Apparently Randall is originally from Elibe and Emma is from Hoshido.
I don’t plan on adding extra dlc / cipher card characters for the time being. Nor do I plan on adding kaga spinoff characters yet. I’d rather add more characters that we’re missing or add some of the many memorable bosses from the series. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but there are tons of bosses from the series that we don’t have artwork for that I’d love to include if art was made. I don’t expect to get art for them all, so it might make more sense to approach it in a less comprehensive way - maybe aim for a few from each game and generic boss art for the rest, using just boss names. I haven’t started adding any bosses yet, but that’d be where I go before extended characters. Afterall, there is a config option to play as bosses instead of the usual recruitable characters.

There’s this Est mug in the repo dy DiamondAppendix that’s based off her Echoes design. Are you looking for the Gaiden versions of the FE2 characters or their updated designs?
I find it silly how the Whitewings get extra slots as distinct units just for SOV first in Heroes and now here. I know why, the roster of playable units in their game is small, and I can begrudgingly justify that. And of course the “Archanean” versions are the same slot. It’s just weird to have a specific duplicate of yourself for the middle part of the trilogy, and then revert back to your base form by the end.
I can see going up against glass in fire Emblem 8 would be a payback for the one time he didn’t want to replace himself I think having other bosses from other games would be cool to have even if they’re not the main boss at least having a boss for each game would be cool
