edit: UPDATE by bpat
Just to be clear, this is not an announcement of said event, only a bit of an explanation/rant about the situation.
An ongoing theme in the history of FEE3 is that, at the end of the day, nobody wants to run this damn thing twice. It’s a huge time sink and requires a lot of people-wrangling that is just a burnout generator. Last year’s completely hands-off submission phase was supposed to address this to some extent, but, as @Relic hasn’t seemed to express any interest in running it again, it seems that the reduction wasn’t enough.
I have toyed with the idea of stepping up myself. Historically, there has been lots of discussion about who FEE3 is for, and what the overall goal of the show is. Obviously, if I end up running the show, I would like to do it my way, which would be to personally (or, at least, me + a committee hand-selected by me), subjectively select the best N submissions, and release a produced, high-effort show, similar to how old FEE3s ran.
The idea has understandably been panned every time it’s been brought up, which is why I haven’t been pushing it very hard – I know what it’s like to put hard work into getting something showcased on at a bigger venue only to have it rejected for fuzzy reasons.
As for the obvious question, why can’t I (Cam) just do what Relic did last year? Because I don’t want to. I’ll be frank and say that very few recent FEE3 submissions have been able to keep my interest, and I’m not all that happy with what’s been ending up on the FEU channel. As I put it during the conversation leading to this announcement, if you’re willing to deal with the logistics, I’m happy to be hands-off about it, but if I’m doing all the work, I’ll do it in a way that I’d be personally proud of. Call me elitist or nepotistic if you want, but that’s how it is.
So, what’s going to happen? As I see it, there are three options:
- Someone steps up (if you’re interested, contact me and we can talk)
- I run the show as described above
- FEE3 doesn’t run
