Hello FERU it is I Hatsuru.
As the title says, there are many jokes and or saying that there will be something that will eventually kill the hacking scene at some point.
People (like myself) has joked that they will SAVE hacking by releasing a game or even more tools to make the scene more bountiful.
However, in an actual scenario where hacking can still go downhill, what would be a realistic way to SAVE HACKING going forward.
global public education with better standards and comprehensiveness so people don’t pee themselves when they see even the slightest bit of technical skill requirement
To save hacking, we should make our own voyager golden record containing febuilder + the whole repo and send it out into the cosmos. Then it can be an alien’s problem to solve.
From what I understand, all the functions have been decompiled, although this is not quite the same thing as having a complete decomp. People have often said “decomp is 99% complete” when they were talking about the functions specifically.
Here’s eebit’s message that goes into more details:
but fr, idk if the scene needs saving, I’d say it’s pretty active. Granted, I wasn’t involved in it in what I assume was its hayday prolly like 10-15 years ago, but it seems like we still have a steady stream of new hacks releasing, an active forum and discord with access to advice and information on hacking….
Someone making something that let us go beyond the 32 space we have to make longer hacks, bc like that space was limited bc it was played on the gameboy, a emulator should be able to play with more space ergo febuilder should let play with more space
What would be a realistic way to SAVE HACKING going forward.
Not sure about the premise this question relies on, what makes you feel it needs saving at this moment in time? Is interest waning in your eyes?
But I’ll entertain. For the buildfile users at least, what I feel would do this is to have a consolidated master buildfile with all the best patches and hacks already preconfigured and ready to go at the flip of a switch. Without needing to fight to make different ones play nice with each other. Which, as it happens is a subgoal I’m working on.
Bro if someone could backport all of the fe8 patches to fe7 id be INDEBTED to them. Fe7 has many less patches for replacing graphics (which makes anyone trying to make a unique looking fe7 hack want to rip their hair out) so even just someone figuring out how to make all of the graphics replacing hacks for fe6 and fe7 would be huge progress
From what I’ve gathered on my own and other patch makers in the community, a lot of code is super hard coded. Its much harder to get custom stuff rolling because of that. FE8 has the least amount of hard coding and provides a lot more with what you can do
Ok that makes a lot more sense! I’ve never seen a straight answer as to why fe8 is ideal for hacking, but that makes complete sense. Thanks for the explanation!
This is in no way meant to shame anybody!! I’m an absolute noob at literally everything to do with febuilder, so what I’m saying is more wishful thinking than anything else
