Murgleis Bartre, Durandal Fir and Armads Gonzales. You can’t get better with the Western Isles’ dynamic trio.
Sorry Armads goes to Barth smh.
But yeah Rutger and Fir share the Durandal (Unless Rutger is dead lol)
Durandal goes to Alan
Maltet goes to Alan
Armads goes to Alan
everything goes to Alan
okay I may have a few more takes because these takes have reminded my of my garbage opinions
*casual mode has a place and fire emblem and actively makes the experience better
*the dating sim elements of fire emblem is not intrusive in the slightest and deserves to be in the game
*FE8 is the best GBA game in terms of gameplay and the best FE game in general when it comes to story
- Three Houses is the second best game in terms of gameplay and story
- Edelgard works better as a protagonist than an antagonist
- Awakening is more fun as a game where you can snowball every character than any hack that attempts to ‘balance’ it
- binding blade is worse than revalations
I support Alan supremacy.
That’s why I love games like Path of Radiance, Sacred Stones and Shadow Dragon DS. The first two have a lot of characters that can just snowball like there’s no tomorrow and make the endgame really easy to cheese in the case of Sacred Stones (but I only think it’s fun in Ephraim route, because fuck you, Eirika Route) meanwhile Path of Radiance is fun all the time… If you speed up with an emulator (I can’t because I play on an original WIi, woohoooo…) of course. In the case of Shadow Dragon DS is less extreme because of Hard 5, but we still have Sedgar and Wolf, two of my favourite units in all of Fire Emblem, that can just tear through hordes and hordes of enemies as generals, and then I just reclass them into Warrior or Hero to make them fight better.
I would truly call this a hot take and an interesting one tbh. Thanks for you sharing it here.
Now for my personal takes on it.
The only things I would say Gaiden for sure did entirely better than Echoes are:
- Making Palla and Catria stronger. They have triple effective might against monsters and certain Desert and Swamp maps with archers don’t have itemized bows that can threaten them.
- The STORY portion of Celica having to sacrifice herself for Alm to be freed from the Dragon Maw.
- No Spoiling Premonitions.
- No overly expensive DLC.
Rings not as broken but they are still good. I can see the appeal in both approaches.
My issue with Gaiden, like it is for most of the FE fan base is just how SLOW it is:
-
The movement, the handling of the ui, the animations are all very slug-ish. An emulator’s speed up function can help deal with this but I still find them too slow even with that.
-
Units level up pretty slowly in this game.
-
Which means that it’s going to take a while for Silque to get to level 7 and obtain Warp. The fact that Infinitely ranged Warp and Falcon Knights are by far the best ways to get through the slowness of Gaiden really kills its replay-ability and varied gameplay for me.
-
Hit Rates are AWFUL in this game. As if it wasn’t enough with units level up slowly and the overall pacing of the game being slug-ish, you have so many instances of attacks way too frequently missing and making battles needlessly longer. Echoes may have some shaky hit rates as well but they are not as bad (especially with support bonuses) as those in Gaiden.
-
The portion of Alm being trapped in the Dragon’s Maw is incredibly tedious gameplay wise. Literally move a single time with Celica only to have Alm and his group do the same battle over and over again.
Half this topic is takes y’all found in the back of your freezer and the remaining half are y’all getting bizarrely upset over innocuous comments.
That is the point I disagree with the most. Sure, the prize is way too high. But how is Gaiden better for plainly not having that optional content? It feels like when people say Shadow Dragon is a bad remake because of the gaidenchapters that don’t even matter.
Most of the people that say Gaiden Chapters don’t matter, haven’t played a Shadow Dragon Ironman. Seriously, those chapters save you when you have almost nothing left in your army since it lets you get more exp for the few units that actually survived, and the generic allies that join, get more beefier if the few units that you have left are at a high level.
Arden is an unironically good character.
There are people that disagree with this? He’s easily one of the most down to earth characters in the franchise.
I feel nothing towards Deirdre.
Same. At least the manga gives her more of a character, but as she is she’s not much better than accessories like Rinea unfortunately.
Lachesis as a character sucks. I don’t get the appeal.
Well, first off, she’s of a pretty popular archetype from the beginning, think Clair, Clarine, Maribelle, etc. but then there’s the tragedy surrounding her brother. Now, this part takes a bit of imagination, but if you’ve been using Lachesis normally (no staff spamming), she’ll promote to Master Knight near the end of Ch.3 up to Mid-Ch. 4. Of course due to the lack of dialogue, FE4 relies on a lot of gameplay implications to do the heavy work, the implication here being that despite being distraught from her brother’s death, she steels herself and trains like crazy to get to the point of having busted stats, a mount, and nearly every weapon type available to her. I think that’s really damn cool. Maybe not everyone picked up on that, but clearly many did because even the FE4 manga author depicted this happening.
There’s also the whole deal with her complicated relationship with Beowolf and Finn that is never fully explained, the fact that she raised Nanna and Leif early on before leaving to go search for Diarmuid, and other things that Kaga planned. If she had more screentime she’d be on the same level of badass mother as Eyvel. There’s the whole…interest in her brother implications, but my personal interpretation (aka headcanon) is that she was just a dumb teenager (15) and through her experiences grew out of it and entered a healthy relationship with Finn by the end. It makes sense to me.
tl;dr despite how straightforward of a character she initially is, she still has a lot of mystery surrounding her including her fate, which makes her intriguing on top of being generally likeable and cool.
I’d respond to some other stuff in your post but I don’t want to flood the thread, but I’ll just say yeah Eldigan has been incredibly misunderstood by the fanbase for years but I don’t expect much when they think Ishtar is a good/better character. lol
As for Arden, I never really saw people who treat him as anything but a joke, so I wrote it down. There’s more to him than funny “haha hes ugly and a bad unit.”
I am glad someone else agrees with me about the Deirdre thing. Always felt alone when seeing so many Deirdre fans.
I suppose if you interpret Lachesis like that, there could be some interest in her. For me, she ended up promoting around the start of chapter 3, not the end of it or chapter 4. I didn’t really see anything to her besides how much she was interested in her brother which, well, made me disturbed. Reading the manga CERTAINLY did not help that opinion formulate, for me.
I think she’d be fine if that whole thing was removed. Maybe just make her idolize him as like “oh he’s the best” sort of in the same vein where kids go “yeah my dad could beat up your dad” but replace dad with brother, that could be a better way of handling the whole arc.
Feel free to write up any thoughts still, always happy to have a discussion.
I like how your longest reply was the one defending Lachesis
“It’s not a big problem if some of your characters die in Fire Emblem; I want each player to create their own unique story. Don’t get caught up trying to get a “perfect ending.” Have fun!”
-Kaga
I think Kaga was talking about the games that he made and @GabrielKnight was more talking about games since 6
archers are also overpowered
Yeah, it’s the same reasons armors are super good. Generals have access to bows and that makes them archers but with actual def. That in turn trivialises fighting wyverns.
Shadows of Valentia is the best Fire Emblem since Radiant Dawn by a country mile.
Three Houses storytelling is worse than Fates because the Monastery kills any sense of pacing or momentum of the story. At least Fates has a sense of proggression.
Claude is completely irrelevant to the plot, even in his own route. Edlegard/Dmitri drama is the clearly the story that was meant to be told, and Claude has nothing to do.
Cindered Shadows is the best gameplay experience in Three Houses because it actually lets me play Fire Emblem.
While Ike is a compelling character, the actual narrative of FE9 is boring.
I love Casual mode and I’m not ashamed of it.
Permadeath (and large cast) makes FE late game suck.
