imo the idea is there is always an ‘ideal’ weapon for a given situation with a given playable character versus an enemy, and the designer’s job is to make sure that it doesn’t just overly lean towards one particular weapon or weapon type in most scenarios. the Hag paragraph is a pretty good explanation of this, where units are presented as ‘hybrid’ but in reality the ideal choice for them is almost always one specific weapon type. (that said, for instance i don’t really agree that raleigh would never use lances given that there is a pretty notable amount of sword enemies earlygame that lance raleigh is the best at handling them given that they are your only passable lance unit early on unless you’re high on that Nikolaos copium, but i digress)
from personal experience when doing Hag 0%, my main choice of lategame carry (Pericles) could wield swords, axes and anima, but the ‘general’ usage weapon for me ended up being the anima tome Earthquake which was basically just a physical weapon disguised as an anima tome that doesn’t interact with weapon triangle, which made it universally applicable to all enemies. Pericles could use Fimbulvetr, but the damage on it is at best comparable and most of the time lacking to Earthquake, or he could use his actual physical weapons, of which swords and axes have to contend with weapon triangle and the fact that lategame Hag enemies often carry multiple weapon types which makes it not always possible to have the appropriate weapon (which also lends into the claim that bows are the best weapon type in Hag, due to bows also interacting outside the WT). Another alternative to Pericles weaponry is the combustion tome which is brave magic which is its own level of broken, so it’s not really a good argument here, but it also lends to anima being Pericles’ best weapon type to use in a given vacuum.
There are situations where you of course want to pull out alternative weaponry like say brave axe for when combustion doesnt do enough to enemies with high res or effective weaponry like swordslayer which Hag gives you a pretty decent variety of. but yeah you generally just default to earthquake goes brr
tl;dr is game dev should make sure there’s a good reason to make use of a hybrid unit’s traits, otherwise they arent really good ‘hybrids’ per se. not to shit on devs like Rubenio who has done an incredible job with Hag for instance, this is honestly not an easy balance to strike
