I’m Leland from Spellbrush, a research lab and game studio that combines anime aesthetics with cutting-edge AI research. We’re the team behind projects like Midjourney, Nijijourney, and Waifu Labs, and we’ve channeled our research into creating mobile games like Arrowmancer.
Our talented team includes developers who’ve worked on acclaimed tactics games like Sword of Convallaria, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and Archeland. We’ve also got team members with experience on major titles like League of Legends and Jetpack Joyride.
We’re currently developing an anime-styled mobile tactics game inspired by Fire Emblem, and we’re looking for a passionate developer to join our team. The ideal candidate would have experience creating Fire Emblem mods or ROM hacks, but we’re open to anyone who loves the genre and wants to push tactical gaming forward.
You are the ideal candidate if you:
Are a dedicated anime enthusiast
Have Unity experience
Bring substantial programming experience
Don’t worry if you don’t necessarily check all these boxes – what matters most is your passion for tactics games and drive to innovate in the genre.
The position is based in either our San Francisco or Tokyo office. We provide work visas for qualified candidates, and compensation is competitive and negotiable based on experience.
If you’re interested, please apply on our careers page under the Gameplay Programmer role, AND email me at leland@spellbrush.com with the subject header [Gameplay Programmer FE Universe] Your Name, include a quick intro, and a resume. The reason I need both is so that I can make sure your application is seen by me among all the other applications we get.
Huge plus if you’ve worked on your own rom hack! Let’s chat if you’re interested.
Sooo the awkward thing is, yes! We will. But we have been around since even before the generative AI art era. We actually have some of the best image models in the world focused on pure anime aesthetics. The garbage you see on the app story are mostly cash grabs focused on making money rather than making a good game. Our games art are a mix of handcrafted by fantastic artists and also generated and with aesthetics and player experience in mind. While I can’t send links, you can probably find reviews of Arrowmancer on Reddit, and it’s also available for download on the iOS. (We recently shut down live service because we want to move onto our second title. Games are hard to make)
Good question. Some of our best candidates have come from passion communities like online modding and rom hack communities. Since everyone at our company is a fire emblem fan, and the game itself is inspired by fire emblem, where else to look but one of the most passionate communities of developers and fire emblem fans online? At least that’s what I’m hoping
I think your project will derided by FEU users if you use gen AI art as a project that was shown off in FEE3 that used generated art was derided for the usage of it. Furthermore, there are other moral and legal quandaries about gen AI. Please go elsewhere. Or do not use gen AI in the first place. In my opinion, gen AI cheapens the overall experience of a project as it looks unprofessional and messy in many areas that could be easily solved by a human artist.
We do hire artists! Our artists have worked on some of the best games in the world, and we employ both human and non human techniques in our pipeline. Rest assured, our game has real, human artists with human art in it. Gen AI is used in various parts of our production pipeline (most of it used for concepting and moodboarding)

There’s a few people in the community who are suitable for the role but I’m unsure if they are interested. I think you should just follow best practice and link to an official job site instead of here. doing it like this just seems way more sketchy
If it is a professional level company, shouldn’t this research first be authorized by the forum administrators anyway? Still, research for generative ai…sigh
