This leaves Gazak as the last capturable boss left. We’re almost there. After that will be the UNPCs and unique bosses, so look forward to that. I’ll do another compilation update after Gazak is done. It will be another nice milestone to look back from.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Tarba)
Honestly surprisingly well styled character for a berserker. Maybe Nohrian Berserkers are built different (Charlotte). Then again theres also Gazzak, Hans and the bandit twins… Tarba came out looking a little bit bigger but again his foundation reference portrait was also pretty big (Gerik). Managed to use all the slots of the colour palette for him, which is surprising for how dull/mono colour his look is. Overall pretty happy with how he turned out.
Phew that’s the last capturable boss. At this point I’m at 83 Fates portraits completed, which is pretty nuts (I have an updated compilation available below). Next will be the UNPCs and Non playable bosses, which there are another 13 portraits remaining (depending if I feel like doing the non humanoid versions of Lilith, Garon and Anankos or not (at the moment leaning against just because its been exhausting so far)).
I may do another break portrait or two in between the next batch as well, but we’ll see how I feel when I get around there. After that it’ll just be Corrins left.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Gazak)
Here is the last capturable boss completed. Gazak’s pose was actually a little bit hard, he is hunched over in a way that his shoulder pads wouldn’t fit in easily, so its not quite the same as he is in his Fates portrait. I also decided not to draw his exaggerated lips like Lloyd, Llewyn and Excellus because its a bit harder to fit into his portrait with his giant smile (it worked for Excellus because Excellus didn’t have a standard size head). Still I think he looked iconic enough with just his smile and not the lips anyway. Overall I’m pretty happy with how he turned out.
And here is the updated Fates collection Dropbox Link
Alright first portrait of the new set. Its a nice breath of fresh air after sort of dragging my feet through the capturable bosses. Looking at the next round, there will still be challenges (I’m most dreading Sumeragi). Looking at the list of characters I’ve got to do, there doesn’t look like much, but its still a bit of work. Any guess of who is coming next?
List in Alphabetical order;
Anankos
Anthony
Cassita
Hans
Iago
Kotaro
Lilith
Mikoto
Omozu
Rainbow Sage
Sumeragi
Zola
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Layla)
This is the 2nd character name Layla that I’ve drawn. The first being for d_h’s Hetja’s Quest. Its honestly nice doing a innocent female character after drawing like 4 - 5 brawny dude bosses who share similarish colour palettes. Layla was supposed to be the songstress for Garon, but is subbed out by Azura during the plot. The two reference images I had of her (a screenshot of Fates and her CYL portrait from FEH) had two different shades for her pink/purple hair so I think I ended up with a slightly more purple toned hair. I actually did wedding veil transparency effect on a art project last year so that experience kinda came in for Layla’s headdress. Honestly the hardest part was trying to do the circlet part of her headdress and the cross patterns in her headdress. The hands came out pretty well but if you want a no hands alt that is available here too.
Here is the next one. I’ve been a bit busy taking a break lately, but also getting back into it. I’ve had ideas on some non Fates portraits that I really want to do, but we’ll see whether or not I’ll slot them in as break or not. For now the current portraits haven’t been draining.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Mikoto)
The Hoshidan Regent Queen. Had to shrink the headpiece that sits behind her head, but otherwise everything else is pretty proportional. I’m not 100% satisfied with her hair and this is 3rd iteration of shading I did for it and decided this was enough for now. I decided not to do the little gold stitching details on the outside of her collar because they didn’t stand out when I put them in. The same for the circlet bit on her forehead. Otherwise I’m pretty happy with everything else.
I might go back and do a hackbox extended version, but I do reiterate that I try to always make my portraits as compatible friendly. Which means to keep everything within the hackbox, which makes it usable for projects that can’t or do not use that patch.
For this sprite I did consider also making a partnering joke portrait as well, but I got a bit lazy and decided just doing it was enough.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Iago)
The Nohrian head strategist and also the Gharnef expy/archtype of Fates. I was originally quite apprehensive about doing Iago, because I consider his design amongst the more complex ones in Fates, however he turned out a lot more straightforward than some of the others I’ve done. The fact I had done Kilma already, helped alot with his chest piece and shoulder armour, The mask also turned out a lot more easier than expected, although at the cost of some detailing on it that I considered not possible to do on a smaller scale. Overall, I’m pretty happy with how he turned out. The armour turned out well, the back piece did too (even better than Kilma’s I feel). His colour palette was also not a struggle to fit either compared to the last dozen or so sprites I’ve done.
Here is the next one, looking back on it I think Ninjas have the second most abundant unique character portraits (Kaze, Saizo, Kagero, Asugi, Kotaro and Omozu). Surprisingly only barely beating out Fighters/Berserkers would of been it (Arthur, Charlotte, Hans, Gazak, Tarba, Llolyd and Lleylwen) considering you end up fighting Nohrians most of the time in Fates.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Kotaro)
Probably one of the most story tied in enemy bosses in the game, they have battle quotes with Shura (whose clan he killed), Saizo and obviously Corrin. His colour palette is kinda of bland but otherwise is pretty straightforward. I was wary about his pose, but in the end it turned out alright and I could fit in one set of spikes/blades too. He also coincidentally ended up roughly the same height as the Saizo and Kaze portraits I did too. I do usually try to make all the characters varying heights rather than just filling the hackbox (although some poses and designs make that difficult) to add variation and keep all the characters in sizing relative to each other. Overall pretty happy with how he turned out.
I think because villagers usually have simple designs they’re a lot quicker to draw usually. With Cassita done, that is 88 Fates portraits drawn so far. Thats a lot of portraits… Not sure if I’d ever do another non GBA title’s entire unique roster again, its a lot of portraits. This leaves us with the final 8 NPC/Bosses left.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Cassita)
Probably among the more obscure NPCs of Fates. I think she’s Elise’s nanny or caretaker from when she was baby/kid. I think she turned out a lot better than her counterpart from Awakening Donnel’s Mom (she even gets a name instead of just maid/nurse). Other than that, I don’t really have much to say about her. She could probably be easily recoloured if you need another generic villager too.
Alright been a bit busy lately, but here is the next one. With this one down there are only seven left to go. Personally I’ve decided I’d like to be done with Fates hopefully before October (this is including the Corrins). So we’ll see how we’re pacing.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Rainbow Sage)
Honestly conceptually an interesting plot point in the Fates story. Another dragon that unlocks a dragon descendant’s true potential via a Mister Miyagi/Korin training in disguise lesson. However in execution it felt kinda of poor. I like his design over Old Hubba’s but Old Hubba is definitely a more fun character. Unlike Cassius and Dwyer I did decide to draw the Rainbow Sage’s staff. Because it fits in the hackbox and it was simple to colour. Otherwise He’s a pretty simple character to draw. I did toss up drawing his eyebrows with the darkest skin tone as per most other portraits, but it didn’t look right so its his hair tone.
hi idk how this site works i just made an account to ask if i could use one of your sprites on Wplace. its like r/place on Reddit but for the map of the world?
Alright was having fun drawing these two portraits, so here is a two for one.
I enjoyed the My Castle mechanic in Fates to be honest. Mainly because I could customise it and to certain extent control it’s progression. That and it was like a precursor to the Aether Keep/Raid feature in FEH where you design your own defenses for invading battles.
There are only 6 more remaining Unique NPC/Bosses left. I’m still tossing up whether do some certain alts of characters that have been or yet to be completed as well so we’ll see how I feel when I get there.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Lilith)
So Corrin’s last retainer who isn’t actually playable (and is also their sibling if I recall correctly). The Astral Dragon Liltih. Her head ended up looking a bit bigger than I planned, but I think its the hat that makes it look bigger. I was using Thea as a reference for the face pose, and overlayed they look similar in size. Honestly surprised I ended up getting away with one spare tone as well for her. Other than that I don’t have much to say about her humanoid form. Pretty happy with how generally clean it turned out. Afterwards I was tossing up whether or not I’d do her Astral Dragon form and decided sure, it’d be fun and different. That Astral dragon did require an extra tone after shifting things around. My experience with non humanoid portraits made it a lot easier to plan out. For these I think of the frames first and then sort of draw them accordingly. However my planning still was a little off and if you notice the insertable version had to be lowered 3 pixels so I could fit her mouth into the speaking frames properly. This is why I have a 3rd image showing her original version which is 3 pixels taller. The only thing I’d maybe work on if I went back to the dragon form is maybe play with the tones again and see if I could add maybe one more red tone.
Now with the last ninja done, we’re down to the last 5 characters left. Any guesses for who is coming next? Looking back on it there weren’t a lot of non playable bosses in Fates, but that I suppose is what was interesting in the Pokemon style dual game titles.
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Omozu)
The last ninja to be drawn and also one of your first bosses that you fight. Not really much to say about Omozu really. He has an interesting side on pose, but its pretty much hidden by his neck scarf. He does however have another hand pose which I don’t consider among the better hands I’ve drawn, so if I were to go back to this one, thats definitely having another do over maybe. Other than that he somehow managed to use the colour palette, but could probably be re jigged to use so many colours.
Forgot to mention this (mainly since you put out Omozu’s portrait quickly) but I really like how you ended up making Lilith’s dragon form. She turned out pretty cool, and out of all the non human portraits she definitely has one of the easier, if not the easiest, portraits to make. Fun and cool looking portrait overall.
As for the next character, I would want to say it’s Sumeragi, but prob it won’t be him, so I’ll say Hans instead.
Interesting how both Omozu(Mozu in Japanese) and Mozu (Mozume) share the same name-scheme from the bull-headed shrike. I believe Haitaka is named after a type of bird, as well…the Sparrow Hawk!
Unfortunately for your guess I went to the end of the alphabet with this one. Coincidentally I found Kozaki’s artwork of the Nohrian villains a charmingly, silly family portrait. Something that seems to be done in common with Garon for some reason between Kozaki, Soeda Ippei and fans.
We’re now down to the final 4, however I feel like I may do some special portraits before the final two, depending how I feel. Any more guesses for who is coming next?
I’ve updated the Fates post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates - FE 14 Fates - Zola)
The last Dark Mage to be drawn. He looks tall, but its all hat. That wierd jester like hat. Honestly I put a lot of energy into his hat and his face because those are his defining features. After that though his hand was sort of wierd to draw and probably the thing I have the least satisfaction with. I think if I were to ever revisit him, I’d probably play around with his colour palette and re do his hand. But otherwise I’m quite happy with how his face turned out. His blink frames also took me a while to get right as well due to the awkward eye shape and and face angle. There is also a no hand alt version available as well.
