Garytop's Display Cabinet

So I finished my personal art project, which did end up taking almost exactly one month (I could of finished faster, but got distracted by some releases such as League of Legends: Swarm (a Vampire Survivors style game)). I decided I had done a lot of male characters recently and kind of felt like doing a villain so thats how I came to do this one.

I have a few other ideas I’m currently tossing up on drawing at the moment (maybe another pirate OC, maybe another Dynasty Warriors character, etc.) There were a lot options and ideas that came to me last month while working on my other project, so I’m sorta spoilt for choice.

I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fodlan Saga - FE 3 Houses - Cornelia)

FE 3 Houses - Cornelia
I was thinking coming back I wanted to do a villain. I also found that I hadn’t done many female villains, so Cornelia sort of ticked both boxes. She was a challenge because she has a lot of colours even if they’re varying shades of red/purple/pink. I could double up some colours in her hair with her skin tone to give me more jewelry or clothing tones, but I think this set was nice and it meant if I wanted to do a TWISTD alt (even though I don’t think an official one exists) I could recolour things easily. The hardest was trying to get her eyes kind of right, and this is what I came up with. Otherwise I was pretty happy with everything else (although I wish I considered making her a little taller to draw more of her dress to imply more coverage). If I were to revisit, I’d defintely go back to the feathers and maybe the eyes, which is why I’ve done 2 alts (one without the purple feathers and one without Gremory feathers at all)

EDIT: Added Angry/Snapped Variants

Well I’ve seen my previous submission has sparked some debate and discourse over in the discussion thread. My only comment on it is that I actually haven’t played Three Hopes (partly because I didn’t enjoy the first FE Warriors as much as the other spin offs and my attention being divided amongst other ventures), so my understanding of the Fodlan characters is solely based on Intelligent System’s Three Houses and not Koei Tecmo’s Three Hopes (all of KT’s adaptions of Third Party IPs (see the first Gundam DW series, FotNS Ken’s Rage 1&2, FE:W, Hyrule Warriors and AoC, etc) so far are non canon and more akin to fun fan fiction (which isn’t bad)). However I will say we probably shouldn’t discuss potential spoiler plot points from a game that is only 2 years old.

Anyway onto the next sprite, at this point I had completed the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC twice now and thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed it more than the base game (and I enjoyed that one a lot) because it felt like a more condensed experience and version of the base game. So here is the poster NPC for that DLC.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Elden Ring - Needle Knight Leda)

Elden Ring - Needle Knight Leda

So I’ve finished the Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree DLC twice now and this probably the poster NPC for that DLC. To be honest, a lot of the NPCs look really nice or cool except they’re usually wearing helmets or headgear so you can’t see their face all too well. However Leda had key art for the DLC (although you couldn’t see her eyes in it) with her helmet off (felt really Berserk like). If you do hack the game to see her face, she has silver eyes which were kind of hard to do here without making her eyes huge (which makes characters look younger). As for the trimming, its not to the same level of detail as the source material, but thats more so because the size of the trimming and decals are too small if to scale. Overall I’m pretty happy with this, I also did her helmet as that is what you will most likely see for the majority. I was aiming to maker her hair a more faint glowing type of blonde as per her art which I think I conveyed reasonably well. Overall happy with how it turned out.

Good to see a fellow Tarnished doing justice to Leda, almost makes me want to sprite Rellana :+1:

I’m probably at 1/3 of the DLC in terms of exploration, FromSoft literally added a whole new map with multiple layers and dungeons to the base game. Now it’s almost the size of 2 entire games packed in one…it’s never going to really end

I have a soft spot for the FGC, even though I don’t actively play it that much (maybe a game in a blue moon) but I find they always have hype moments and trailers. If you’re not a big FGC (Fighting Game Community) player but are interested I do suggest watching Maximillian Dood (always entertaining and can be educational in regards to Fighting Games and their history).

Tekken Spoilers

So Heihachi has “died” several times throughout the series and has been positioned as the big bad several times as well. However it looked pretty final and climatic at the end of Tekken 7 when Kazuya finally kills him sort of pushing past his trauma as well as fully giving into every ounce of devil gene in him. Tekken 7 also explored Heihachi’s past and well he started seeming more anti hero to me and I admired the fact that in his family of crazy, he actually is the only one without devil gene or relying on demonic possession. Or maybe I missed something…

Anyway, for the next sprite, still got quite a few options I am contemplating to draw… Maybe another villain.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Tekken - Heihachi Mishima)

Tekken - Heihachi Mishima

So one of the most iconic fighting game characters was announced for the DLC for Tekken 8 last month during EVO, the feeling was pretty hype so I felt compelled to draw him but couldnt at the time due to other commitments. You know at first I wasn’t sure I could fit in his hair, but it ended up surprisingly easy. I decided not to shade match his eyebrows because I couldn’t get the silver grey eyebrows to work quite right. In the DLC trailer the lighting makes him look like he has black hair, which I decided to make an alt of. His design and outfit is based on a mix of shots from the DLC trailer (Volcano scene and the monk garb). Overall pretty happy with how he turned out.

EDIT: Forgot to save with his hands, so I’ve kept his handless ones here as well if you prefer that.

Here is another buff dude and I suppose technically a villain. Also coincidentally a fighting game character (if you consider Dissidia a fighting game). I think his dynamic as the antagonist to Tidus’ protagonist status and their relationship development over the game of Final Fantasy X, helped play a part in why its my favourite FF (up until then I hadn’t really experienced foreign storytelling so most of the games, movies and TV shows I had watched had straight forward good vs evil plots with happy endings).

I’m considering a couple of options for my next few sprites, maybe some OCs, maybe finishing off the Fates Royals (Sakura and Elise), maybe even a FEH character (haven’t done one in a while). Then I think I have a few more non Fire Emblem characters lined up as well.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Final Fantasy X - Jecht)

Final Fantasy X - Jecht

This is my 2nd attempt at Jecht much like Tidus. I did attempt both of them once when Dissidia first came out (Auron on the other hand as seen before has been attempted many times (even pre Dissidia)) I like Jecht’s character and kind of isn’t really a villain in the traditional sense either. Just more like the game’s antagonist. This time his design was done with a mix of elements from both Nomura’s Dissidia design and his original artwork. When I was working on him and didn’t have his facial hair done yet, I could kind of see the familial resemblance to Tidus, however I still wonder how he and his wife (Black and brunette hair respectively), had Tidus (blonde). Jecht is a more darker tan skin colour than Tidus, which I can accept since his wife is more fairer skinned. Overall pretty happy with how this turned out. If I were to revisit this one, probably look at his hair again, I used to use dark blacks like this on sprites a lot more in the past, however I moved away from it because I felt like it clashed often with the border colour which is supposed to be the darkest colour. I also did an alt of his without the shoulder pad and strap, because it covered up the Zanarkand Abe’s tattoo.

Also in the third main post, Observation Only - Final Fantasy X - Jecht (Old Version)

Final Fantasy X - Jecht (Old Version)

So when I first did Jecht (left side), it was after Dissidia first released. The first attempt was mainly based on that one, however I wasn’t quite happy with how his proportions turned out back then. His hair was also quite more blockier done back then too. Later on I came to realise it was probably due to how I was trying to reinterpret Nomura’s colouring and shading style too much into the portrait. Which you know if every portrait is sharing that style its not bad (I think consistency in style can go a long way for looks and cohesion of a rom hack or art piece). Still its always nice to see what I’ve done compared to my abilities now and the choices I made.

Well I decided to do the next two Fates siblings, so you can tell who is coming next. I don’t know if this gets noticed, but I don’t always try to fill the hackbox so to speak, but I like to use characters especially if they’re from the same series to scale with each other. Which you can see in the collation of the 4 Nohrian siblings next to each other or in my Awakening portraits (although looking at this, maybe I’ll touch up Xander at some point since he is the oldest portrait here).

I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE 14 Fates - Elise)

FE 14 Fates - Elise

The last of the playable Nohrian Royals, Elise. This one required a bit of theory crafting on how to colour her and utilise the limit of 15 colours (16 including the background). Even though her outfit is predominantly black with pink highlights, you need to remember she has a white shirt under her cloak, a white pinkish flower on her chest and she also chose to have purple highlights in her hair to take after her older sister Camilla. So for Elise I used only 2 unique colours for her blonde (plus 2 skin tones), 2 unique colours for her black clothing (plus the border colour), 2 unique colours for her purple highlights and for the white flower and ribbons I used 3 unique colours (plus 1 skin tone). Overall I’m pretty happy with how this one turned out, however I do find her two ponytails a bit more blandly coloured, but when I tried to add some texture like I did Mariabelle’s I think the limit to my colour palette made it difficult to look any good.

As a resident Elise fan, I really like this portrait! She’s so cute!

[I even had a male version of her commissioned for my hack, lol]

And as I said before that is the last Hoshidan Sibling done. So now we have the collection of Hoshido Royals. Like with the Nohrians I decided to put all my Hoshido Royals together too, looks kinda neat. I don’t know if I’ll do the Corrins and Azura, they’re definitely not the next few sprites I’ll draw, and with the Corrins I don’t know if I’d do the same thing I did for the Robins.

I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fates Saga - FE Fates - Sakura)

FE 14 Fates - Sakura

The last of the playable Hoshido Royals, Sakura. This one was much easier compared to her Nohrian counterpart, far less colours to try and balance. Looking at references for her design was enlightening. For example I didn’t really notice she had a like a hairbow behind her hair. I did originally try colouring her with the same skin tones I gave her siblings, but that turned out a bit too yellow or dark for her look (more like the FE8 standard tones for males), so I gave her a more fair skin tone. Overall I’m pretty satisfied with how this one turned out. If I were to revisit this one, I might add her staff.

So its been a few days and I’ve actually been sitting on this latest portrait half finished for like a week. However I got distracted with Black Myth Wukong which has been fun to play (currently doing a 2nd playthrough). Its one of the games that one of my close friends and I have begun to play in common (we used to play more games in common, less so now) so its fun to play and discuss about it together, which is why its sort of taken a lot more of my time than I expected.

I’ve been meaning to do Astarion for a while now, I was unsure how to approach his hair and face for a while. However I ended up with what I’ve got now. I’m currently undecided on what to draw next. I’ve done quite a few other game franchises recently, and I have just done essentially 4 Fates portraits too. I was also on a villain kick for a while, so maybe something different next.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Baldurs Gate 3 - Astarion)

Baldurs Gate 3 - Astarion

Its the party vampire from Baldurs Gate. Neil Newbon honestly did a fantastic job portraying Astarion in Baldurs Gate and even though he wasnt usually one of my party members (I usually made a rogue character), he was always fun to have around for dialogue. He was a challenge because his hair is kinda hard to convey, but after looking at a few references this is what I settled on and I think it turned out pretty well. I do wish I had a few more colours to work with. It took me a while to also get his eyes, but I think I got something I liked in the end. Because he has a pale peach skin tone, I couldnt use his skin tone for the trimming and embroidery on his clothing, which meant I was down two colours. His outfit colour varies depending on what you’re referencing. His cover art’s main colour is red, however in game and other artworks make his clothing more purple than red, so this is sorta the colour I settled on. I think if I were to revisit this one, his clothing would probably get re coloured again and maybe I would experiment again with the colours and see if I could squeeze out another tone or two somewhere.

I’ve finished BMW (Black Myth Wukong, a friend of mine pointed out that acronym and it amused me) 3 times through now (thats to pretty much unlock everything in it) and thus got around to drawing this latest portrait. Coincidentally the way his pose turned out makes him kinda complimentary to the Cloud portrait I’ve done as seen below. My next few months are looking kinda busy, so we’ll see how my pacing goes for drawing, it is kind of slow at the moment partially because of artist block and partially because a lot of IRL commitments are coming up.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Final Fantasy VII - Sephiroth v3)

Final Fantasy VII - Sephiroth v3

So this is my third attempt at Sephiroth, something to go matching with the Cloud I did. I wanted to do him in a different pose to his Dissidia and Smash poses as those are the ones I see him the most in usually (sort of his refined and calm look). So I was aiming for his more head tilted, hair strands over his face, slightly deranged Nibelheim incident look. Overall, I am pretty happy with how his hair shading actually turned out. I think if I were to re do this one, I may re do his face size because I used Glen as a basis for my proportions, it turned out on the bigger side (Glen’s hair style sort of masks how big his head is (same with Caellach and Linus)). I may consider doing another pose of Sephiroth down the line, but that will be a while away. I also have a shirtless alt up as well, because well I am pretty proud with how his hair turned out (although because you need some outlining, it does make the strands behind his face a bit thicker).

EDIT: I slept on it and decided to do an alt without the hair strands in his face.

I think it would be fun if you made another version with his more anime style triangular hair (Like he appears in Smash)

I have considered that, since that is how he is usually depicted in Nomura arts, however most people do versions of him with that haircut with the exaggerated bangs, so I decided to go a bit closer to his modern (AC)/remake designs where its a little softer in design. I may do one with more exaggerated bangs in a different pose later down the line.

In other news have another OC from me. I do have something lined up next so, less decision paralysis.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (OCs - Saphyre)

Saphyre

So I wanted to try making a character with a darker skin tone and something with a bit of blue, since I haven’t done a portrait with some in a while. So that is where Saphyre came from (that and I didn’t want to name her just Sapphire since its very similar to Saphir). I got stuck coming with her hairstyle for a while. I knew I wanted a shorter haircut after doing some more complex haircuts recently and then was looking at different references and found it hard to convert them to the more side on face pose like Selena, Ismaire and Elphin. I wanted to portray this character is a more serious and refined look, so I went through several iterations on her clothing, but sorta had to settle on this design due to my limited colour pallette (can’t use her hair or her skin tone to make trimming so, had to double down on the white to make silver/white trimming). I like the idea of epaulets and cravats as noble clothing, but lacked the colours to make external epaulets for Saphyre, so I kinda cheated and shaped her cloak as if they’re over epaulets.

Recommendations:
I originally envisioned her design to be one of the following class types
Mage/Sage/Mage Knight, Noble/Lord.

So its been a while since I posted something, but that is because the first thing I drew was a request and I wanted to wait until I had something else to post, which then I decided I wanted to make another thing to go alongside the 2nd thing I drew and it sorta dragged on from there. That and I’ve been busy playing Space Marine 2 with some friends since it came out (playing it with friends reminds me of playing with them back in the Xbox360 days, something that I missed since our game tastes sorta started to diverge afterwards). Ramblings aside, please note there is a Observation Only submission in this post and usage rights mainly belong the requester, so if you wish to use that portrait in anyway, you will need to reach out to them.

I’ve updated the 2nd Awakening post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Ylisse Saga - FE Awakening - Assassin)

FE Awakening - Asssassin

Decided to make this portrait alongside 2 other portraits because it would be nice and simple to make after doing some slightly more complex portraits. The Assassin doesn’t really have much going on in design, so it was nice and easy to do. As a generic it could be useful for anyone who wants an generic shifty looking person in a hood. Its also simple to recolour if you want to change it from Enemy, to Ally as well.

I’ve also updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Black Myth Wukong - Zhu Bajie)

Black Myth Wukong - Zhu Bajie

Zhu Bajie is probably my favourite side character from Black Myth Wukong. He is also a character from the original Journey to the West, who started off as an antagonist before joining the heroes in that story. This design of his is based on the animation from the game Listen Not (these are played at the end of chapters in the game). This animation was probably my favourite one in the game, because I like the story telling in it and I’m a sucker love tragedies. I probably also have a sort of bias for Zhu Bajie (also known as Pigsy) because I have also played him in a stage show before too IRL. This one was an interesting challenge to draw because obviously his head is not human (although I may do a human version of him later) and previously the most deviation I’ve done from a human is a warcraft Orc who still keeps relatively proportional human features. I did consider giving him normal pupil eyes at one point and tried, but it looked really off so I decided to not.

I’ve also updated the third main post with the below entry under Observation Only - (Hetja’s Quest - Layla)

So this is a portrait made at request for Hetja’s Quest, an OC for d_h. As this is their OC, the rights of usage will mainly fall under their choice, as such this portrait will sit in the observation only section. This was an interesting request, which involved the request to try and fit a harp into the portrait. I decided on a Lyre style instead because I felt that a Lyre could better fit into a GBA hackbox without being too overbearing, that and the outfit reference I was sent looked like those ancient Greek or Roman clothing you see with overlapping fabrics, so I felt a Lyre (which is associated with Hermes, at least in my head) felt fitting. Overall I think this is one of the better times fingers/hands have turned out in my portraits.

Alright here is another generic for usage. Fire Emblem seems to like using this pale gold colour for armour for their generics a lot, well especially from Awakening to Three Houses/Hopes. I suppose because it works, although Engage was a nice change of pace in designs.

I’ve been thinking about what to draw next and thought about a fun theme to draw for October and was thinking maybe doing fallen/corrupted alts of characters or villains. Although I’m not sure how much time I’ll have to draw in October as its looking really busy IRL. We’ll see…

I’ve updated the main post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Fodlan Saga - FE 3 Houses/Hopes - Falco Knight/Viscount Fenja)

FE 3 Houses - 3 Houses/Hopes - Falco Knight/Viscount Fenja

I was thinking about doing some more villains and was looking up Fire Emblem villains, and found that 3 Hopes/Houses had some more generic villains (which ended up being just classes). So to keep going on some villains/generics I did the Falco Knight from Three Houses. Again a sucker for winged helmets and this one has this weird 4 winged design going on. I find metallic wings on sprites are sometimes hit or miss when it comes to armour design, so if I were to revisit this one, definitely the helmet would get another look at. I also decided to do an alt with the hidden eyes more in vein with the GBA generics as well if people would prefer that.

Well since you did well now you have to do our man Myson/Viscount Essar/Viscount Menja/Viscount Albany/Generic Warlock.

I think Myson and the generic warlocks have a cool design, but the tall hat would make for a very awkward hackbox pose. Maybe if I get back to doing some other generics, maybe I’ll check him out again.

Did another villain from another Intelligent System game this time round, just not Fire Emblem. The art that inspired the idea for the alt for this sprite will be pasted below and can be found amongst the artist’s safe for work artwork here (AutomaticGiraffe) however please be aware if you seek their other artwork on other platforms you may encounter NSFW artwork.

I’ve updated the third main post with the below entry under F2E - Non Fire Emblem Properties (Other Game Franchises - Advance Wars 2 - Lash)

Advance Wars 2 - Lash

Carrying on with another villain, this time from a different Intelligent System game, its Lash. This is based on her design by WayForward in Reboot Camp. She is one of my favourite COs due to being an all rounder (but stronger and defense/terrain oriented). I’ve been meaning to do some Advance Wars COs and dress them up in Fire Emblem/Fantasy themed outfits. The Tharja/Dark Mage outfit was inspired by artwork I saw years ago by an artist that goes by @AutoGiraffe2 or @AutoGiraffe (short for AutomaticGiraffe) on twitter/X (however be aware when searching for their art, because they do have nsfw artwork too). However only the idea for the outfit and the headdress came from there. Otherwise it sorta makes sense, in that they both like to experiment, often at the expense of others. I considered detailing the hair a bit more in a more Fire Emblem esque style, however I struggle with Afro style hair and I felt the shading as is was already good looking.

Nice! I too was considering making some characters be dressed like if they were Fire Emblem characters, these ones mainly being Persona characters. I could make some of those later since I’ve already done some of them before.

We’ll see if I do some more, maybe another franchise even. As for next I’m undecided, but I did decide to get a head start on a spooky month (still undecided if I’m going to do entirely villains or evil alts for this month).

As for this character, I’m not sure they fall under Awakening, but that is where i’m putting them for now.

I’ve updated the 2nd Awakening Post with the below entry under F2E - Fire Emblem (FE Ylisse Saga - FE Awakening - Risen King - Fell Chrom)

FE Awakening - Risen King - Fell Chrom

To be honest this concept is probably more closer to a FEH/Cipher Character than Awakening, but I decided to put this under Awakening because it is Chrom. This was referenced as a potential for Chrom with the Dreadlords in Awakening being the future parents and then realised in the Cipher as the Risen King and in FEH as Fell Chrom. I decided to go with Fell Chrom’s armour because I don’t think there are enough colours to go with with the the white armour of Risen King’s from the cipher. I used my regular Chrom as a base and then changed his posture and head angle which is why he appears shorter. I wanted the leaning forward, head bowed pose like sad Eliwood with one eye covered like Fallen Lyon. Overall pretty happy with how this one turned out, I think his hair actually turned out closer to Chrom’s than my regular Chrom’s haircut. I also did an alt without his crown, which I was worried about how it was going to fit, so it is a bit shorter and slightly simpler than the FEH design.

And Chrom-Nom is D E A D.
