Five Hour Blitz

Five Hour Blitz

x5

Theme (optional)

  • Use chatgpt to help storyboard, generate ideas, or draft some dialogue for you. Doesn’t matter if it’s bad 'cause this is a blitz

Rules

  • Start with :icecream: vanilla fe
  • Create :bookmark: a chapter or two
  • You have :clock1: 5 hours
  • Post about it

Assets

  • Use community :free: to use assets
    • (eg. graphics, music, asm hacks, etc. :white_check_mark:)

This means you can cheat!

  • If you make and share an asset on the repo thread, it is fair game :ok:
  • :man_shrugging:t4: You can pick out assets beforehand if you want to cheat but just a little bit
  • Buildfiles are slow, so set up in advance you cheaters

Honour System

  • :customs: We won’t know how long you spend, cheater
  • If someone’s chapter is better than yours, they probably cheated anyway :warning:

Suggestions

  • :new: map, characters, and dialogue
  • Draft your chapter by :clock130: 3 hours
  • Playtest it at :clock10: 4 hours and fast-forward :arrow_double_up:

Example

If you’re new to FEBuilder, this might help. I made a chapter in 16 mins, so you can make one in 300.

Links

:scroll: :pen: Describe how the session went

  • Share pics/gifs/videos of it here :metal:t2:
  • Include how much time you spent :timer_clock:
  • Write a list of credits :credit_card:
  • Post the final .UPS / link :file_folder: if you want, or don’t. It’s about the experience, not the result.

Rewards

:moneybag: :moneybag: :moneybag:

  • We can vote on our favourites :chart_with_upwards_trend:
  • People might  like your post

Categories

  • Most-liked reply :love_letter:
  • Top-voted as favourite :100:
  • Fastest any% :snowboarder:t2: (and probably crappiest hack)

The real reward was the :rainbow: friends chapter you made along the way. You could touch it up and re-use it as a chapter in your own hack, for example. Quick drafts are rough, but makes for a great starting place.

Deadline

  • FIVE HOURS FROM READING THIS
    Sorry, not really.
  • Dec 31st, 2024 :spiral_calendar:
  • It’s just a few hours of your time, so don’t procrastinate plz.

sorry, is this in reaction to the optional theme of having chatgpt help you with something in the process of making a silly hack in a few hours?

I don’t understand - if you don’t like chatgpt, you don’t have to use it

Polls are anonymous

Should my contest be forbidden from suggesting chatgpt be optionally used?
  • Yes
  • No
0 voters

The above question is worded in a way that suggests censorship, while the one below is neutral and simply your preference.

  • I would prefer not to have chatgpt suggested to me
  • I don’t mind chatgpt being suggested
0 voters

I’m not trying to offend anyone, I’m just genuinely surprised by this reaction. Please do not respond to this thread with discussion about chatgpt. If suggesting chatgpt be optionally used is disliked by a lot of people in the above preference poll, then I am happy to remove the suggestion. If users start discussing ai in general on this thread, then I’d prefer to lock the thread and make it again without mention of chatgpt.

Thanks for your feedback.

what’s the point of a contest with a “restriction” if you are well aware that it can be cheated on and thus ignore the whole point of the restriction

like this is just a “make a chapter” with no extra flair, and it even has a “dont bother with it if its wrong lmao”

Like there have been contests where there was a gimmick around what you were doing as a subject, but this is zero

AI is a wholeass can of worms that I’d rather not talk about but consider what message “go use AI” leaves.

Post-modernist fe hacking, everyone. When I care more that I made a hack, rather expressing myself and my ideas and sharing them through medium of rom-hacking.

If I wanted to practice making a rom-hack, I’d rather practice by trying to make a rom-hack that I want to make.

“* Use chatgpt to help storyboard, generate ideas, or draft some dialogue for you. Doesn’t matter if it’s bad 'cause this is a blitz”

I’m just a little confused by this part. If you’re saying the writing quality doesn’t matter for this because it’s a blitz, why include a section suggesting the use of AI to write the story?

Wouldn’t it make more sense to just say no story or dialogue is needed for this blitz?

the theme for this coming hot off the heels of the 'coord moment just gives an air that this was made in part as response to that considering its within that same ballpark. which then leaves a negative vibe about the intents

The purpose of this event is to encourage people to try something new in a low stakes, friendly environment, and to enjoy the process. Each year when I repost it, I think back to how SirNicee participated in the first one, among others:

Obviously I can’t take credit for participants being part of the community, but I like to believe that hosting this each year has a positive impact on the community

I want to encourage people to experiment, and let them know that it’s okay to make something bad, lol.

Following the recent discussions of ai, I thought it’d be a harmless suggestion to optionally try it as part of your hacking process. I’ve had a positive experience with ai in this context, but I’ve had negative experiences with ai in some other contexts. I figured some people might try it in this context and share what their result is - be it negative or positive. For a silly hack made in a few hours, it felt like the perfect opportunity to mess around with it, and if all you get out of it is a laugh at how badly it did when given x tasks, that’s fine by me lol. I figured we’d get entertainment out of the process either way.

I did not realize that many people would react negatively to the suggestion. I apologize for not reading the room properly.

I don’t see this thread going anywhere positive, so I’d like to ask that it be closed, please.

I think use of ChatGPT in this context is perfectly fine.

For what it’s worth I don’t understand the flak you’re getting. It was just a suggestion that would lead to potentially funny results

You have not been on tumblr, dear friend.

and I consider this a positive!

Well, it’s not all bad there. I’m just saying pretty much everyone I see on that platform is rabidly against AI anything.

justified

that’s because AI sucks and shouldn’t be used in creative environments

Fair enough, but vesly only suggested it. Like people can just choose not to use it. I just don’t understand why the guy is catching heat for posing an option

Once again, you have not been on Tumblr.

on my new 30 minutes hack submission contest, crediting people is optional

in fact, stealing assets is optional

I only suggest it, people can choose not to do this, and I shouldn’t catch heat for posing an option

For full context, Vesly made a couple polls on the FEU discord yesterday:

As you can see, he got a nay on both of these. He then subsequently made this thread out of the blue with that chatGPT theme, within a couple hours of that last poll. The initial people in this thread (cb1052 and Spensir in particular) are mostly boggling that apparently he was annoyed enough by those poll results to deliberately make it the theme for this contest, to which he has pretended it was an innocently chosen optional theme, and not something he deliberately picked as a result of that pushback he got on the discord. For my part I think that is rather dishonest, whatever your opinion on chatGPT.
