Fire Emblem: War of Lovers (16+3/30 Chapters)

Hey buddy, I’d like to ask if each character can have their own unique color scheme?

Right now nobody has a unique palette. The characters will get them in the future, but they aren’t a high priority right now.

Fixed - I forgot to capitalise the O in “of” in the file name…

Sorry about that.

it happens. who knew that missing capitalization can cause such an issue.

I may as well make a quick progress report, being the day that it is. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Early drafts of Act 3 have begun. I’ve started to write some dialogue and have the first drafts of the chapter maps ready. There’s a lot more work to go in terms of adding extra characters and at least adequately balancing their join times. There’s not that much to screenshot, but have a few placeholder scenes, at least. All are subject to change.

The to-do list is lengthy: beyond actually finishing Act 3 I want to at some point:

  • Go back and implement a gaiden for each story arc - I have the locations already planned out.
  • Replace the vanilla GUI with something else wherever possible.
  • Finalise the roster, both of canon Fire Emblem characters and random summons. I currently have 77/100 random units pencilled in, but only 42/100 are implemented, so are largely subject to change.
  • Give every character a portrait, CG, palette, and/or voice clip as appropriate.
  • Consider whether or not to properly have skills (they’d be largely Jugdral-style, no skill inflation here) and other such balancing decisions
  • Add in more thematically appropriate music - ideally every continent would only have tracks playing in the relevant games.
  • Update the story outline: things have changed a bit since the original draft. No sweeping rewrites: that’s a good way to never reach the finish line.
  • Account for playable character deaths entirely: this likely won’t happen for a very long time and zombies in the dialogue and/or extensive game over conditions will remain for a while.

Any or none of these may appear in the next update. The ideal release date will be around the next FEE3, but I made the mistake of promising that last time, resulting in a buggy mess. So no promises. I have no doubt I forgot something writing that to-do, but it’s something that needs writing down: I have an awful lot of work if I want to reach that finish line. Such is the way in romhacking.

Just finished the 12th chapter yesterday. Had a good time of it playing on normal.
I rolled 5 flyers then they rolled the game lmao.

Story was a little more serious than I was expecting which was fun. All the village comments being people wildly misunderstanding or suffering under the whims of a completely ridiculous scenario was cool.

Keep up the good work.

It’s been a while, and it’s time for a progress update. Have a few screenshots.

Work on Act 3 is continuing on. Most of the work I’ve put in recently involved replacing most of the UI with FE3-inspired elements, along with replacing some of the requantisations with F2U portraits. Target release date is still FEE3, but I will not make any promises this year!

Why yes, the FEE3 schedule has arrived. As it so happens, it’s been three months since I last posted a progress update. Showtime is in three weeks: will I finish Act 3 in three weeks?
Well, I’ve been chipping away at progress here and there, mostly in that ever-unglamourous grunt work that either can’t be screenshotted or makes for a boring screenshot. What interest is there in unit stat adjustment comparisons? Well, Ryan had 7 more strength than he should have, so he’s been nerfed, and boss stat lines were all over the place. But enough about that.
Have a small few teaser screenshots. Toad’s been there from the beginning, but I added a hackbox extension, so he doesn’t lose half his head anymore.

The main thing to note is extra units: at the time of writing, 83 of the 100 random units have been determined and will be implemented for version 0.4. Who are these newcomers?

Well, this heavily-redacted character sheet will spill the beans. The censor wasn’t perfect, though, and he forgot to cover a few letters up. If anyone can figure out everyone, you can have a cookie, that internet prize of a bygone era.

War of Lovers showtime: the 10th of November. Either I’ll have a release then, or I won’t. Regardless, it’s the presentation immediately after Dies Emblem, which beats the total planned War of Lovers unit count by I think three. Of course, Dies isn’t restricted by pesky GBA limitations! Patch or otherwise, see you in three weeks.

It’s that time of the year: the FEE3 video!

No patch release, though: I’ve learned something from last year, at least. I can say that every main story chapter has at least been drafted, though Chapter 16 is very incomplete and the rest of the arc as a whole is not polished in the slightest, to the point where I don’t feel satisfied with even a “super-rough, proceed with caution” WIP. I can, however, share a few screenshots of some more presentable bits. Mostly presentation stuff again, like battle palettes and some summon character lines.

SummonKill

Aside: I’d love to get rid of the later FF5 port requants one of these days. Lenna’s hair is pink. And have Mystic Square Alice, because I ended up playing through early Touhou this year (I’ve finished the first eight games now).
The Gaiden summoning is largely handled through events, but that’s one of the most important things I’ve made. It’s not FE2 without enemy summoners.
I’d rather get a release out sooner rather than later (within 2025 sounds nice), but if New Year’s Day comes and I haven’t finished Valencia, I’ll be a bit disappointed with myself, but that will be about it.
For comparison, have my old to-do list.

  • Go back and implement a gaiden for each story arc - I have the locations already planned out.
    Won’t release without them.
  • Replace the vanilla GUI with something else wherever possible.
Good progress has been made here.
  • Finalise the roster, both of canon Fire Emblem characters and random summons.
83/100 summons determined for Act 3. Canon roster finalised to Act 3 (31/50), but up for discussion beyond that.
  • Give every character a portrait, CG, palette, and/or voice clip as appropriate.
Progress is being made on this front.
  • Consider whether or not to properly have skills (they’d be largely Jugdral-style, no skill inflation here) and other such balancing decisions.
Not this release, but likely once we hit Jugdral.
  • Add in more thematically appropriate music - ideally every continent would only have tracks playing in the relevant games.
A decent amount of FE2 music is in.
  • Update the story outline: things have changed a bit since the original draft. No sweeping rewrites: that’s a good way to never reach the finish line.
I know where I want to go, but I do run into issues with the finer details every so often. I do discuss these with a friend to try and resolve them.
  • Account for playable character deaths entirely: this likely won’t happen for a very long time and zombies in the dialogue and/or extensive game over conditions will remain for a while.
Not until 1.0 at bare minimum!

That should be about everything. I’ll see you around at some time in the future.

Well, it sure is near the end of January. Every time I thought I was nearly in a releasable state, another massive bug or ten appeared and pushed the release back as I fixed them.

But enough about that.

War of Lovers v0.4 - Valencia - 25/01/2026

  • Implemented the third story arc, set on Valencia.
  • Chapters 13 to 16 added.
  • Also added three gaiden chapters: 5x, 10x, and 13x.
  • Added 41 new characters to the summon pool, with six new series added.
  • Added three support chains.
  • Replaced many Fire Emblem requantisations with proper portraits.
  • Replaced many UI elements with FE3-inspired ones.
  • Added a choice to forego summoning entirely and play a more traditional
campaign with canon Fire Emblem characters.

Question

How can you talk to Chloè?

After you talk to Nyna with Marth it shows that in the talk section in the status menu he can talk to Chloè

Answer

To activate that talk, you need to fulfil some secret requirements (I won’t give them away, it’s a pretty big secret!). Talk display is a bit wonky and it shows talks even if you can’t currently activate them.

Happy Valentine’s Day. I’ve been polishing up some bits and pieces of the Valencia release after taking a breather. Now I’ve polished what I want to polish. What better day is there than today to release…

War of Lovers v0.41 - 14/02/2026

  • Significantly rewrote several pieces of dialogue to improve characterisation
and to adjust a few plot elements.
  • Gave voice clips to all voiced canon Fire Emblem characters without them.
  • Gave summon backgrounds to all characters without them.
No voice clips were added for them for technical reasons.
  • Support data has been added for all playable characters. No conversations
have been written outside of the three already present.
  • Continuing from an earlier version should be safe, supports aside.
