Fire Emblem: Eckesachs - FE6, but you play as the bad guys! [Complete story rewrite]

Hey there, thank you for your hack, Ruben! I actually have a long post that I wrote up but I’m getting an error from the forum that I can’t embed images. Is it because I’m a brand new member? I do have what I’ve written saved at least.

Aha, NOW I can post images! Get ready to check out my team!

Final Team

Zephiel was stalling and very slow until promotion. Seemed like he gained a lot more stats after promoting, which was funny. I’m an Armor Knight defender so being slow isn’t too unusual to me.

When he got the Eckesachs, he really popped off. That Chapter 17 promotion really helped so so much.

Brunya was another that got much better after promoting. Her defenses suffered quite a lot but I was able to boost her with some Dragonshields. She eventually hit so hard and was a great unit. I wish I had gotten her staff rank a bit higher.

When I read in the thread that she would be in the Final Chapter, I went OOP and trained her in Chapter 17. Some Arena training and she was promoted and immediately got some work done! Loved her.

TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK

Look at those stats. Look at that REALLY LOW DEFENSE. I had to Dragonshield him because he was at 10 naturally! His extra resistance was pretty fun though. Pretty darn solid unit and someone I enjoyed using the whole time.

This guy was my staff man in charge. I was puzzled by his low Res but I assume the regular boss might be like this. He didn’t die to Ballistas or stuff like that so I was cool with it. I was glad I got him to 20.

I just felt like I should use Erik. He turned out surprisingly well, but again, his defense was pretty low. I gave him a Dragonshield and a Speedwings. He was great at moving around but he was in danger of getting hit by incoming enemies and dying. I’d be curious in trying out Arcard next time.

Remember that part of the hack where he Henned all over those guys?

Henning was great and my most natural unit. He fell off as the endgame commenced but he was a surprisingly solid guy to have around and he did more than his share of work.

I like Damas. I do! I remember a FE6 Hard mode hack that replaced him with Ward and I really loved him, so I decided to use him here. Him being a thief was a pleasant bonus because Thoril and Kabul couldn’t grow worth a damn. His Strength was much lower than I expected but then again I picked him up in Chapter 12.

As an adult I’ve learned to TAKE YOUR SUPPLEMENTS. HERE’S YOUR DOSE OF ZINC

As I said, I’m an Armor Knight defender so I liked this guy. I was using Leygance but he wasn’t keeping up for me, so I ended up getting Zinque. I got him in Chapter 13 which was good, because he sure didn’t grow too much. I gave him some Energy Rings and Speedwings because I liked him a lot. Shame he didn’t quite hit Level 20 but the experience gain slowed down to just a few points at a time.

Poor Batta. He honestly wasn’t too good, but I did some selective Arena leveling and gave him some stat boosters. But, critting every attack can’t be too bad. Maybe I should go back and use Scollan. Or Rose and Maggie, I guess.

The dialogue was great! Great job adapting the story. Such a bleak ending but it was really fun! I wanted to use Murdock the whole time but I was afraid he would be Jagening so I benched him.

Other weird faves I had:

Ohtz. I wanted to like him but he was SO DARN SLOW! 8 speed at level 12 promoted, yuck!

Flaer. I used him the whole game but he just never like EXPLODED so he was more minor in my gang. He did get to level 9 promoted and was quite good with the Delphi Shield.

I also lost Thoril (which sucked because I liked him more than Kabul) on his joining chapter. I didn’t get to recruit Hamandeggs because Debias died on Chapter 8. Oops. I knew about the character limit so I figured some losses would be fine.

I’ve written a lot so I’ll close off here. Thanks again for a great experience!!!

I’m happy you’ve enjoyed the hack! Some interesting unit choices there. Might be the first one to get early Zinque and use him lol

Hi SaintRubenio I wanted to try your hack today but when I downloaded the files I got 2 ups files can you tell me the differences between the 2 files:

Default one has the overworld sprite colors switched, player units are red and enemy units are blue. The vanilla map colors patch restore the regular palettes for convenience.

Can I get a list of all the support in this hack?

Everything you might need is in the guide.

the dialogue you write is very funny SaintBubenio:

it is better when he tell it to Roartz and his ugly Mug :joy:

in chapter 4 at battle end when talking to Murdock Zephiel said:“The army may stand down for nounce”
it should be “The army may stand down for now”

Question how many support does this hack have the vanilla 5 support right?
The map start looking like this after I get a level up:

pressing R to access the unit info screen reset the map to this:

“For your Puny men”

I’m liking how the hack’s playing so far! I’ve always wanted to play a Binding Blade hack where Narcian is finally playable, because he’s a funny guy and I like him. (Everyone’s roasting the crap out of him and his lieutenant apparently got caught in the midst of a “moment of vulnerability,” which does make me a little worried, but his bases and growths seem good from what’s on the sheet, so I’m excited to use him.) Really, my only genuine complaint so far would be that a LOT of the early-game units are just super slow. By the time I recruited Oates, and he complained about being so slow, I couldn’t help but notice most of my units still had a lower speed stat than him. Maybe that’s just because Brunnya kept getting completely garbage level-ups that made me think she just had low growths. (No, she was just getting unlucky…seriously, take it easier on Narcian – I’ve seen his bases, you’re no one to talk, Brunnya). And also I guess the fact that Martel is your only healer until Oates shows up, and that early-game is BRUTAL.
Also a little disappointed the Rutger boss-fight didn’t happen later – maybe as a promoted Swordmaster with a Wo Dao. We all know how devastating Crit-ger can be, so the fact he was sitting on an early-game throne with a Light-Brand of all things feels like wasted potential. Having to FIGHT a fully-trained Critger could have been absolutely terrifying in a good way. (Out of respect for Rutger, I proceeded to cut down Mitan for little reason other than that I could. Godspeed, Rutger.)

Summary

I’m also pretty sure Lugh and Chad died off-screen, which disappoints me a little, since part of the appeal feels like the hesitation that comes with killing beloved playable characters…and Chad too I guess. On that note, it’s funny that the Nomad-Thieves are quite literally exactly the same – down to their growth-rates and support-lists.

…I guess I had less to say than I thought I did. I’m having a lot of fun so far though! (Also thank you immensely for not limiting the Arena like you did with Princess’ Lament, because that was sorely needed… :'D)
But yeah, I guess the only suggestions I’d make is to increase the speed-bases of a few early-game units, and (hopefully) replace Rutger with a later character for the sake of a terrifying, moving boss with 102% crit later on.

EDIT: Oh! Also maybe give Jahn a slightly higher Con. He seems like a fairly bulky guy, and 6 just feels so weirdly low. I tried to have him Rescue Idunn, so my flier could rescue Debias during the Durandal map, only to find out he just…couldn’t, since they were both at 6. He probably doesn’t need Con too much since he uses Dragonstones, but still, it threw me off at times. This is mostly a nitpick, but it just felt weird for the dragon-guy to be so tiny.

Glad you’ve enjoyed the hack overall!

Truth be told, I hate Rutger. Hard mode bonuses (IE a glitch) make him unfairly good, and as a character he’s just another lame edgelord swordsman for the pile, a character trope I’m not fond of in the slightest. I always go out of my way not to use him when I play FE6, and I did not feel particularly inclined to throw him a bone here. If anything, he’s lucky I didn’t just put Ogier there and just vanished him to the shadow realm lol

As for the other two you mentioned, I’m afraid FE6’s cast was too big, I just didn’t have room to fit everyone as bosses. Those two still made a short appearance initially, but FE6 has this weird issue where, if a portrait went unused in vanilla cutscenes and you try to put it in one, the game crashes. As I added more characters, I ended up needing to sacrifice some portraits, and their role was unfortunately just not important enough.

Princess’ Lament was a fun learning experience, but removing all grinding was absolute pettiness from me. I probably won’t do it should I hack FE8 again lol

He doesn’t need con but yeah, when you put it like that, it is rather funny how he’s just a small boy.

That so? That’s a bit of a shame; seems like there’s a lot you could do with a character like Rutger in a story like this. I mean, his backstory revolves around the Bernese mistaking him for one of their own, and him setting off on a Dimitri-esque revenge-mission. I could’ve imagined him shadowing them for a while, appearing as an ambush-spawn or something. But, I suppose it is what it is.
Even on Normal-mode, he’s always just been a fantastic unit and I’ve always loved him. Sure, the Hard-Mode bonuses take what would be one of the best early-game units into THE best early-game unit. …Plus, I may be straight, but…whew…that man’s a looker…

Actually, that makes me a little curious – do you have a list of what happens to every other playable character that isn’t fought as a boss? …Or…well…the bosses in the route-splits too. I fought Clarine, but I’m curious as to whether Klein was a boss in the other route.

Summary

Plus, I noticed the story’s past the point where a lot of characters like Astolfo, Ogier, Saul, Dorothy, etc. would normally appear. Knowing Raigh, that little bastard would probably just show up anywhere, but I’m curious as to whether or not he’d seek revenge for the whole Kabul thing.

Anyway, I made it further, and I like how the Gaiden-chapter bosses use the legendary weapons against the player. …And Gwendolyn just kinda trying her best. It’s a nice touch and makes for an interesting challenge. My heart sunk a little when I stumbled upon Bartre in the darkness – dunno if he moves, since I cast Sleep on him just in-case.

You bring up good points, but well… You’ll have to bear with my poor taste there haha.

About this stuff

Yeah, Klein and Ward are bosses in the other route instead of Clarine and Lot. Whichever of Lot and Ward that doesn’t show up is established to have died offscreen, but I didn’t establish anything for the Reglay bros.

I didn’t keep join time in mind as much as where it’d make sense for characters to appear in this story (which sometimes is roughly around where they join in vanilla, other times is way off), but keep in mind there’s a bunch of characters I just straight up could not implement in any way at all. Not even the Chad and Lugh treatment, they just don’t exist.

It was my first playtester’s idea. I have to agree it’s a real fun little gimmick. Makes the legendaries feel more “earned”, so to speak, when you first have to contend with them being used against you.

Please Tell me Why you converted Dory into a Dancer and not keep his original class as a brigand

Further more why a Female Dancer and not a bard
seeing his dance animation made me think he turn himself into a woman :joy:

Plus look what I found in the Augury :joy:

Hack needed a dancer.

What Dory wants to be is Dory’s business.

I dunno if this is a known issue, but I think I encountered a freeze glitch.
Narcian initiated combat against Sue with the Durandal, except she didn’t counterattack with the Recurve Bow. I’m not sure if this is caused by the Recurve Bow itself, the little flash that occurs with legendary weapons, or both.

EDIT: Loaded a save state and had Narcian do it again, and Sue actually attacked this time? Maybe it…only occurs if she’d miss? Since she DID hit him with the arrow, and I did that little cursor trick to see if anything changed or…well, if Narcian would just get a crit to prevent the freeze from happening again

Huh… I think I may know what causes this. Thanks for reporting. Weird that it’s just slipped by all this time. Will see about throwing out a fix when I’m able.

EDIT: OK actually, no I don’t lol. Weird.

Oh! It happened with Dayan too. It seems to happen even if the Recurve Bow user initiates. He did it on Damas wielding Armads, so I’ll try it with someone else. …Erik’s gonna take an arrow to face real quick – one sec

EDIT:

Nnnnope, still happening

EDIT 2: It seems to function just fine at 2-range. Maybe it’s an issue with archer-animations at 1-range?
