Fire Emblem: Dark Stone - FE8, but you play as the bad guys! [Overhaul with a new story]

Hah! Knew this was going to happen sooner or later. And is that a playable Demon King? Hell yeah, this is gonna be a fun ride!
And just when I needed a new hack to play. I need to try this right now.

Most of the game is Lyon, but much like transformed Idunn in Eckesachs, I had to implement Fomortiis in some way. Up to you to find out what that way is!

v1.3 released!

  • Fixed phantoms being able to obtain desert treasure.
  • Updated a few in-map vendors throughout the game to sell dark tomes. I updated the worldmap vendors but neglected the ones in the map. Yeah, they’re different.
  • The mauthe doog now gets petted in a cutscene. This is very important.

Oh dear. I didn’t intend any references there. What’d I stumble into? Also please activate your Windows or Riev is going to be upset with you

Summary

To be fair, Lyon is his own special brand of crazy.

If its okay, I’m going to give my first initial thoughts of this hack up to chapter 6, and so far, I’m mostly enjoying it.

Story/Dialogue

I don’t quite know what the main plot is just yet, so don’t spoil me lol, but I’m enjoying the humourous dialogue nonetheless thus far, I like the scenes where Lyon summons the monsters at the end of chapter 5, as well as L’Arachel, Dozla and Rennac end of chapter 4. Good stuff overall.

Chapter thoughts

Pro-Ch1-Ch2: These where all pretty straightforward and not really that difficult, does feel overwhelming with the amount of reinforcements there are at times, but manageable.

Ch3: This one can be taken slow if the chests aren’t bothered with, speaking of, I tried to reach the two thieves that spawn but I was too slow, oh well I only missed out on a Red Gem and Longbow. I feel the thieves spawn a bit too soon though or that I’m just bad at Fire Emblem in general.

Ch4: No complaints with this one, I did lose the recruit girl though a few turns after she joined, though personally I’m no big fan of the trainees in general anyway. Bonus points for the free exp from that village, though.

Ch5: Another fine chapter, with the big exception being that it suddenly ended after I had killed all enemies, when it said Talk to Saar, so I missed out on a village and two new characters. I don’t know whether its intentional that it also ends like this, but I was hoping to do some arena abusing as well as just reaching all the other villages before talking to Saar.

Ch5x: This one is easily my least favourite so far, the amount of enemies there are is absurd, this one took me a few tries to find the right strategy. I first tried to just camp it out, didn’t work, I then tried using the mine, didn’t work, I ended up using Tirado (who’s easily the most usable of the 5) to kamikaze the left corridor on his own, as whilst all that was happening Orson literally doesn’t survive at all after he betrays Ephraim if you don’t at least attempt to rush to him.

Unit Review

FE8 - Dark Stone-0
Lyon seem’s alright so far, dumb question, but he’s the only lord?

FE8 - Dark Stone-1
Aias might just be one of my fave units so far, even though he’s only just joined, he was the one that got the free exp from the village, and used him to solo the left side of the map in Ch 5.

FE8 - Dark Stone-2
I always found this guy kind of cool, I don’t know why, seems alright for an archer.

FE8 - Dark Stone-3
Selena’s pretty good, I think she’ll become a pretty powerful Sage if I keep using her.

FE8 - Dark Stone-4
The fact that all three knights have their own niches is cool, Breguet’s got suitable stats for a knight for sure.

FE8 - Dark Stone-5
I’m torn between him and Bazba for my main axe guy, may as well use both.

FE8 - Dark Stone-6
I hate this guy from vanilla, but have to admit, he’s actually doing good, so I may have to regretfully use him.

FE8 - Dark Stone-7
‘I’m Bone’, Alright, your in! Definitely one of the most unusual units so far as his stats shout ‘I’m a thief!’, but still classes as a Brigand, I do hate how he starts out with a Poison Axe, but I guess poison is there to be exploited with that causing more damage.

FE8 - Dark Stone-8
Wow, never realised how similar he is with O’Neill, I think I will use both!

FE8 - Dark Stone-9
Another guy I never liked, so he’s fallen behind, I guess I really should use him as he can become a Bishop which will be useful for the monsters.

FE8 - Dark Stone-10
I can just tell that Caellach is definitely gonna be a top-tier unit.

FE8 - Dark Stone-11
Aside from Duessel, Glen is the most sane of all the bad guys so far, I don’t know if I’m making sense there. I think he’s getting speed-screwed, it’s a shame as I was hoping to use him and not Valter.

FE8 - Dark Stone-12
The game literally tells you to not over-use Duessel, and I just knew anyway that he’s definitely gonna betray us.

FE8 - Dark Stone-13
He’s got some pretty good stats for sure, but we’ll see how Tirado is when he rejoins.

Will probably continue this later this week.

The ingame guide (not the excel file, the guide you can access inside the game) warns you of the map ending on rout. A lot of these more difficult things to implement in dialogue I threw into the guide, so be sure to check it often!

There’s only ever one lord.

The two brigands are basically the thieves of the hack, and it suited Bone to be kind of a weakling. It makes him all the more endearing.

Yeah, I get what you mean. Right now he is less far gone than the rest, to be sure.

Anyway, thank you for your impressions. Hope you continue to enjoy the hack.

I must’ve completely missed it in the ingame guide then, ah well.

I’m on chapter 11, and Tirado and Beran can’t seem to talk to each other despite there being a special conversation warning. Does it have to happen later in the chapter, or is that a bug?

Edit: Loading a world map save, it seems like the conversation is actually between Beran and Murray.

v1.4 released!

  • Made a few adjustments to chapter 5x to hopefully make it a bit more manageable if you are playing more defensively.
  • Fixed chapter 11 erroneously listing a special conversation between Tirado and Beran instead of Murray and Beran.

My mistake. I did some shuffling of conversations in that chapter, and moved a convo between Tirado and Beran forward, replacing it in this chapter with the one between Murray and Beran. However, I forgot to change the pre-chapter notification. It’s been fixed now.

I mean, i didn’t have problems with 5x because of a certain thing cause by a certain item (if you know, you know, i won’t spoil the fun)

I was tempted to patch that out, but then I thought… Eh, it’s a singleplayer game. If someone wants to have that kind of fun, why stop them?

I shit you not, i tried that out of sheer curiosity, i didn’t think it would work, the shit eating grin i had in my face after i saw that it actually worked XD

The game is too hard?? GOOD!!! i love it when u cant just solo the entire map with just 1 or 2 chars.

Also did u actually completed and enjoyed some FE games? if so which 1 and on what difficulty?

Btw Engage was really easy on maddening, u could solo that game with the lord.

I have to say, I’m loving the character interactions. You do a great job of capturing each character’s personality. At times I forget I’m playing a hack. Which is a testiment to your writing skill.

I do feel the enemies are a little overkill in how hard they can hit you (even on normal mode), I was save stating and restarting on several chapters just to keep all my units alive, which I’m not fond of doing. As soon as I got to the Tower of Valni though, all bets were off : D.

I’m currently on chapter 12, and there are a few things I feel could do with some more explanation. Like how Fado miraculously seems to live long enough to take back full control of Renais, despite the fact puppet Vigarde in all likelihood would have killed him outright upon storming the castle.

I have beaten FE 6,7,8,10,Echoes,Three Houses and the Rom Hack “Vision Quest”. I have enjoyed all the beforementioned enough to beat them to the end.
Probably my hardest beaten run is: Shadow Dragon as a Blind (I did look at a few guides on like character recruitment) Ironman on Hard 2.
Also I think difficulty does not necessarily make a game good or bad, just because I do not seek a difficult FE game does not mean I have “lesser” tastes. Fire Emblem has been so many things and that is what makes Fire Emblem as a series pretty.
Everyone has different things that makes a Fire Emblem great to them.
Please do not question whether I ever enjoyed FE just because I did not like a single FE game or because I do not enjoy difficult FE games.

Glad you’re enjoying the hack, even with the difficulty concerns! This was intended to be a harder experience than base FE8, though it does rather surprise me that even on normal enemies are tough lol

As for what you said there… Without delving into detail, there’s an explanation for that later in the hack. It can be missed (ask me again when you get to chapter, uh… let’s say 25 if you’re still curious) but it’s there if you look for it. Though really, Fado’s survival is a self-indulgence on my part. The reasonable thing would’ve been to just make Seth the boss of the map, I mean he’s right there already, but I don’t like that guy, so… Yeah.

To each their own, as they say. We all have our videogame preferences and there are no wrong answers there. I myself prefer harder FEs, but judging the tastes of others is hardly necessary. I’m happy you gave my hack a try nonetheless, and I hope the day will come when you feel like giving it another whirl on normal!

I understand, it seems u have a good grasp of the series if u completed so many FE.

I do think that playing FE on normal difficulty and the harder or hardest difficulty changes the gameplay a lot giving u a very diff experience wich offcourse to each their own, i ment no disrespect.

I was just thinking did u start at hard mode and didnt like the difficulty but do like the game overall meaning normal difficulty is more for you to enjoy it?

Also i dont like Most of FE games at all, they are very mediocre with cringy stories But i do enjoy FE series a lot for the gameplay, the harder the better! if only they would come up with better stories then anime nonsense it would be perfect.

I do LOVE the romhacks wayyyy more though since i think ppl here are very talented and make better FE games then Intelligent Systems themselfs. :star_struck:

Considering what the overall shape of the cast looks like, I’m a little surprised you had the restraint to not make Fado playable! But, overall, in terms of plot, I’m okay with him surviving and being a later boss. His character is undercooked in vanilla and it breaks up the standard fair of killing playable characters. He also works better as a chapter boss than mounted Seth. I also think his explanation and reconquering of Renais isn’t too crazy. With Lyon getting distracted looking for Eirika’s bracelet, Vigarde would have basically had no orders and would have just sat there waiting for Lyon to return and tell him to do something. Hence no execution and all the Grado troops stationed there having basically no leadership.
