Fire Emblem: Black Fang [Story Complete]

Dear author, thank you for your reply. I really like your excellent works.

@HHS

Just finished this hack and i enjoyed my time even though i had a lot of bugs playing on mGBA wich i had to switch to VBA-M wich helped just to end up using FEBuilder to pass event scripts cuz i didnt like VBA-M. (like mGBA way better)

  • Story was pretty good but i didnt feel like it was a main quest more like a side story wich showed some light on the Black Fangs perspective!

  • Difficulty was pretty good, hard but fair in the beginning till mid but at the end it got easier somehow ?

  • Map missions were pretty good too with enough diffrent goals to not make it boring!!

  • Fav char: Jonas!

Thanks for this hack and look forward to ur next hack!

i just finished the game and i must say its a really good one. the story is well made and the characters are interesting.

i wanted to ask though, i am planning to make a mod myself and i wanted to ask if i could have the permission to use part of your “dancer/bard” animation

Oh absolutely. I think it’s a funny animation, first one I edited myself. Feel free to use it.

thank you a lot ^^

Download link not working. Fix it please.

Are you sure? It just worked for me on two different computers. If you hop into the discord, you can find it there too. In the pinned message.

Thanks for your help. :+1::+1::+1:

good. day. Does this hack not have a guide? How could I rexlute the first myrmidon in the game? or the little morph witch from chapter 9?

There’s a guide on the wix website chapter by chapter for most of the game. Should be linked in the top post

More mature themes, support conversations, black fang…I’m sold. Worried because I use mgba and I saw someone had trouble with that

It might be better to switch to VBA just for this hack. I think that’s what I did when I played it.

I have to agree. It’s hard to bug test all the different emulator options out there so I mainly only used vba. It’s been around forever and is the one I was most familiar with.

Mgba sometimes doesn’t load forced reinforcements. Map effects sometimes bug too.

Question, Do you have to deploy the supply in order to use it for that chapter or will we still be able to send stuff regardless of deploying it?

Sorry, I didn’t catch this sooner. I watch the Discord more than the thread. You’ll need to have the supply on the map to send things to it. It’s not like Sacred Stones.

thanks!! let me go get the discord!

The Black Fang is a pinnacle of the modding community Fire Emblem has created. It’s themes are treated seriously, despite some of the aged writing. The characters are well written and expanded upon well. The supports themselves are mostly complete which is pretty unheard of for a lot of hacks, I think it’s a bit of a shame that the greater community has forgotten about this one, with some further polish this hack could stand toe to toe with the greats of the community. The sprites are brilliantly made considering how small the team was at the time.

If you’re considering playing or replaying this hack, here is a list of pros and cons to weigh up. While I didn’t mind, some things may irk players and others might draw them in.

PROS:
-A great story harkening back to the older games.
-Great Sprite work for new and old characters.
-Faithful depictions of those old characters (Mostly)
-A great main protagonist who is just as good in gameplay.
-A mostly complete support cast with paired endings.
-A dedicated website for guides of the chapters to avoid missing anything.
-Fun units who fit the world.
-Digestible chapter length

CONS:
-The writing has aged poorly, there’s sexual tones and the swearing may throw you off, considering characters from the original titles do swear in the hack, it can be a bit of a realism breaker, it can throw you back from the story.
-While the sprites are well made, the main villain does have a bit of a jarring sprite being pink haired and suffering from lack of chin syndrome.
-Not all the supports were fully implemented, however there is a lot more then none and that’s amazing.
-Some chapters have units who bug out and particularly in chapter 20 when faced with three sides to fight. Killing one side, the other joins you as allies, problem is the chapter will not end unless the ally’s boss dies, if you befriend the third side before he dies, you softlock.

IN SHORT:
This hack is amazing and needs more eyes looking at it. While it may be a bit older, what it lacks gets more then made up for with gameplay, story and characters. The units are fun to play with and the serious tones of the story really hit. It’s worth your time, I promise.

wait all the supports aren’t done? Which one so I don’t make them a final party team lol

Probably a case of YMMV but

Summary

I don’t think the writing has aged poorly, and would not consider that to be a con. Black Fang is one of the few ‘true’ 17+ rom hacks to be fully complete, and the strong language and sexual tones are part of that. Most modern rom hacks avoid content like that (or at least tone it down quite a bit compared to a game like Black Fang,) so it can be understandably jarring to see that kind of content on FEU.

Regardless, it’s nice to hear that someone else finished Black Fang! This is still one of my favorite rom hacks, as someone who really loves lore/story expansions on the existing GBA games.

So underrated, I feel like this did not get the attention it deserved at time of release, myself included. I think a younger me couldn’t appreciate stories deeper than “Hero kills bad guy.” But I did a recent playthrough of this and was incredibly impressed by the quality of the writing, mainly how well the creator handled tone. It is one thing to write great dialogue, but Fire Emblem rom hack isn’t the best medium to tell a compelling story. EG leaning too much into comedy at random times can be jarring and can kill the tone of an otherwise serious story. I think creator absolutely nailed the nuances of this given the medium he was working with, this I admired the most about this rom hack.
All I felt wanting for was some updated spritework, lots of free animations in the repository. But honestly this is just a preference thing. I did multiple playthrough recently with no issue.
If you haven’t play this, you need to give it a try.
promise we’re not all bots lmfaooo
