I hope you had a wonderful holidays and a fantastic new years! For me, my big resolution was the hopefully finish Tale of Valor by the end of the year. That goal feels a bit unrealistic consider the snails pace that I move at. As you’ve seen in the threads title, the demo for Tale of Valor will drop on the 31st of this month!
Before we get into anything demo related, I want to give a massive shoutout to @Gultykappa for writing about Tale of Valor in the latest and greatest Archanea Monthly issue! I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did, it was really really well written. The quality of those articles always amazes me. Before reading further, please go like and give some support to Kappa and the team behind Archanea Monthly if you haven’t. Thanks again Kappa!
Experience Tale of Valor’s Dynamic and Thrilling Momentum Mechanic!
Momentum represents the shifting tide of battle and the performance of each army! Certain actions like losing a unit, having villages destroyed can cause momentum to shift in the enemies favor! Conversely, defeating enemy commanders, completing objectives and more can shift the momentum in your favor! Momentum can grant bonuses to either party: *
**(+3 Attack, +3 Defense, +Avoid, and +Crit%)*
This is what sold me on this honestly, reminds me of darkest dungeon or something where your party reacts to losing a unit.
Does this momentum shift mid chapter? Are different characters adversely affected by different things, like characters shown to be more honorable take bigger stat hits when villages are destroyed etc.?
I have never seen anything like this implemented in a hack before, very impressed.
Momentum can change at anytime during the chapter. Bosses can use a “War Cry” to motivate their soldiers thus shifting momentum in their favor. Some in chapter events can also shift the momentum in either parties favor.
I haven’t experimented with unique effects for every unit. That does sound interesting tho.
Part of the fun with momentum is finding creative ways to capitalize on momentum opportunities, like hitting a speed boost in mario kart. When you’ve got the momentum effect, it’s like having a power play in hockey. The odds are in your favor, and it’s your chance to make a big impact.
Sounds fun, looking forward to it. I hope maps are difficult enough to warrant taking full advantage of this mechanic rather than it being an easy win button for when you are already winning.
Keep up the good work
He will be recruitable but he won’t be playable. He is recruited in an intermission chapter, but that so happens to be the last chapter of the demo sadly.
I’m going to release the demo early, I want a break lol.
Check the the OG post for the link to the demo. The guide is nearly complete, I need to finish adding information about chapters 1-F and Intermission 2.
I feel like I’ve gotten most of the bugs, and issues but I’m human and more importantly dumb. If you notice anything wrong with the guide and the demo dm me and let me know.
This demo is still WIP and a lot can change before release, the script in particular is a rough draft so bare with it.
This demo has taken a lot from me, and has been a real burden at times. I’m happy to have it out and for people to enjoy. I love Tale of Valor and I hope you all enjoy it too.
i playtested TOV for an earlier build. it’s peak. play it.
one of the prettiest hacks i’ve ever seen. every bit of graphics from head to toe has been modified to bend to TOV’s art style. everything is vibrant and happy and one of those things thats so good it makes me mad. if you’re not a lunatic like me, it will make you happy.
the gameplay is also super tight. all these side objectives make my brain happy, and it’s always fun using the cool rewards you get from each. even the more minor ones like armor have visual flair that still make them feel a little valuable on your kit. not to mention how fast the maps make you play, which i adore.
chapter 1-2 is a personal fave of mine. can’t spoil too much, but fans of the myth of sisyphus are in for a surprise.
Also Big shout out to Bandana for playing the demo for TOV. Their support was essential in development and they helped me a lot! Thank you again Bandana, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed it!
1-2, the condition to win is Arrive but neither Leuric or Esker had the ‘Arrive’ option in their menu when I put them on top of the blinking arrow by the boss monster. Is that a bug? Am I ‘Ariving’ with the wrong unit?
I’mma report a bug, trying to check Stomp’s description in the Stats screen causes the game to crash.
I’m not sure if it’s because of the emulators I use (VBA; MyBoy!), but it just freezes the screen and crashes the audio.
