[FE8] Fire Emblem: Swords and Peace [WIP][33 chapters]

Hello everyone! I’ve never posted anything here before, but I wanted to make a hack, and so here it is!
Ups Link.

It features

  • 33 Chapters (30 Story, 3 Gaidens)
  • 35+ Playable Characters
  • 60+ Completed Support Chains
  • 150+ Unique Talk Conversations
  • 30+ New Items (Plus a bunch of reworked items)
  • 80+ Boss Conversations
  • 30+ Secret Special Events
  • And so much more!

All three difficulties are balanced, though the enemy stats are a little buggy on normal, so be warned. Hard mode increases enemy stats, gives some bosses and enemies extra skills, and adds extra challenging events on some maps. Easy mode is made to be very easy, for anyone who might want to play through the hack casually. This hack was tested on VBA and mGBA, but the testing was much more thorough on VBA so there might be problems on mGBA.

In its current state the hack is about 75% finished. I hope to release updates periodically and finish it before 2025, but we’ll see…

Also, a warning, the introduction to this hack, (the stuff before the first chapter) is really long, like much longer than most hacks I’ve played. In general the story is probably longer than it needs to be, so sorry if it gets tiring. Or maybe you like it that long. That’s cool too.

Basic Story

<>
The continent of Wylnen has long enjoyed a comfortable peace. The people of Wylnen praise God, a divine dragon that came to them suddenly to save the world. God lead a holy war against the Devil, a dark dragon that brought chaos. This conflict ended when they both disappeared in a flash of light, leaving the people to fend for themselves. For almost 300 years since, the whole of Wylnen has avoided war. This peace has been widely celebrated and upheld by their rulers, a sign of Wylnen’s prosperity, and God’s divine influence.

That peace, however, does not mean the people do not enjoy battle. Gerait, the northeast corner of Wylnen, notoriously labels itself as a Holy Warrior Kingdom, with an advanced millitary, and many of the continent’s strongest fighters.

On the other hand, Forna, the northwest corner of Wylnen, is a merchant kingdom, with a weak army. Yet it is also home to the gladiator arena, where warriors across Wylnen fight to submission. This arena soon becomes home to a tragic incident, which will set off our tale, and start the first war on Wylnen in centuries.

This war, which will also incorporate Serren, the southeast corner of Wylnen, and Llach, the southwest corner of Wylnen, will rend the continent asunder, bring out the worst of its people, test our heroes’ grit and resolve, and reveal the truth behind the continent’s long held façade.
<>

Basic Gameplay

<>
This hack stars Esdin and Millia, the prince and princess of Gerait, as its two lords. (Siblings, but not twins.)

This hack features a party split, like in fe2/15 (No world map though), where one party is run by Esdin, and the other Millia. With exceptions, the maps tend to switch back and forth between Esdin’s group, and Millia’s group, with some featuring both.

The design of this hack is meant to emphasize its various characters, meaning

  • Every character is forced deployed on every map. You can leave your weak units untrained and ready to die, but this has various potential negative repercussions, so you’re incentivized to train and protect all of them.
  • Tons of talk conversations that elaborate on the story and their personalities. Not all talk conversations can be viewed in one playthrough. Some are locked and can’t be viewed unless you do certain actions.
  • Every character has at least 3 supports, which elaborate on their personalities and backstories. Supports are gained at three range, rather than 1, and are gained much faster than base gba games. Supports can’t be activated till chapter 11, and certain supports are locked until you reach certain chapters. You can have as many B supports as possible, but each character only gets one A support. You can view all the supports in the support viewer, which is fully unlocked from the start, though you’ll encounter various spoilers if you look at them before finishing the released chapters. A lot of the supports aren’t finished yet, and can’t be obtained in game.
  • The side characters get more story relevance, including multiple chapters where neither Esdin or Millia are present.
  • Death reactions, where, starting on chapter 9, unique dialogue will play at the end of each chapter, for any characters that die. This mostly features main characters reacting to their deaths, but can also feature side characters if they are alive at the time.
  • Many hidden events, that often gives side characters new personal weapons, or skills.
  • A lot of personal weapons, some of which are equipped from the start, some of which are obtained partly through the game, and some of which are given through secret events.
  • Unique personal skills, as well as other unique skills gotten through level up, or special events.
  • Every unit is pretty easy to recruit, and there’s no hidden units. Most units can’t be missed.

Various Changes

  • Weapons have infinite durability. Many weapons have downsides, though the downsides are usually just poor might, poor hit, and/or high weight. In general, most weapons are modified from base gba in one way or another.
  • Weapons don’t give weapon experience. Weapon level is only determined by each character’s base, and what they raise to after promotion.
  • The only shops are the preparation shop for each chapter. The preparation shop changes greatly from chapter to chapter.
  • Each class has a skill, each character has a personal skill, a few classes gain skills on level up, a few characters gains skills on level up, some events give certain characters skills. Enemies get class skills, bosses get skills to make them more interesting and unique challenges, some generic enemies get special skills, but that’s rare.
  • Strength and magic are separate stats, and various characters focus on both. You can get magic swords/lances/axes/bows.
  • A slightly modified weapon triangle, that gives greater benefits to the initiator, and is more impactful overall. Also bows get a weakened advantage when initiating against tomes.
  • Master seals are the only promotion item. Every class gets two promotion options. Promotion items require level 15 to be used. Promotions are heavily nerfed across the board.
  • Some battle staves.
  • A bunch of classes are reworked, like wyverns getting axes, or cavaliers only getting one of sword/lance. There’s also a number of new classes.
  • The guide is revised with a bunch of lore about the world, and gives some useful tips and explanations about the gameplay. It gets updated at the start of certain chapters.

To unlock chapter 13X you have to save 5+ generic soldiers in chapter 13.
To unlock chapter 14X open three chests, then talk to Kainsdy with Perseus in chapter 14.
To unlock chapter 20X have Zara stand in front of Augustine, or fight Augustine, in chapter 20.

Issues

<>
A lot of staves are kind of buggy in a lot of ways.
When you see the Fornan castle in cutscenes, it displays the Llachian castle instead. I’ll change this eventually. (Eventually)
The prologue and chapter 7 map events can be a bit buggy. Also, they use the base map from fe8.
The music is poorly implemented, and all from base fe8. I’d recommend playing without it, if you don’t mind.
I’ve had it get really laggy at times, some enemy turn sequences can take forever.
Some characters reuse portraits from base gba, because I couldn’t find a better one.
Millia’s base class and her promoted class share standing/moving map animations.
Chapter 14X and 20X are a little messed up, but it’s fine.
Normal mode promoted enemies don’t have the right stats sometimes.
The support viewer will sometimes add extra characters and it can crash.
Thalia’s portrait does not have open mouth frames. Other portraits are buggy in various ways.
Sometimes the death events play at the end of the chapter, even when characters don’t die. I have zero clue what causes this. It’s very rare in my experience.
Supports are rough, with a lot of random mistakes, typos, and inconsistencies, I fixed a lot, but I’m sure there’s many remaining. This also applies to the rest of the game, but the supports are especially mixed up.
A lot of the menus and graphics are still base fe8, they’ll probably get updated eventually. (Eventually)
I don’t like the name Swords and Peace, but I didn’t come up with anything else, so…

Type a few messages in other topics this might help. And if your hack drops with 30 chapters immediately then Jesus on a stick I can imagine it getting a lot of traction. Looking forward to it

Could you at least show some screenshots about the rom hack? It could generate some interest and generate more feedback as time goes by. Wish you luck with the rom hack.

new users dont have link or image perms, so that cant happen

The hack’s there now! Hope it works, and please inform me if it doesn’t!

I hope everyone has as much fun playing it, as I did making it!

I will be watching this with bated breath! Love how much you’ve put into it and can’t wait for the final release! (I don’t like playing unfinished hacks, sorry!)

All i need to know, are there any monster units to recruit in this hack?? i just love manaketes and dog units!!!

I have a question, by how much are promotion gains nerfed? FE7/FE8 promotion gains are quite bad overall aside from the Lord and General Promotion, so I don’t know how you’d nerf them even further.

From the credits, doesn’t seem so?

Currently playing through the hack (and got quite pumped up by the country that hosts a massive Arena tournament), and will inform through edits on this post about any anomalies experienced here, as well as a review after a playthrough is done.

Bugs & Co.

Swords for Peace (5)

  • Prf Lance is either mislabeled (as it is effective against knights and potentially cavalry) or has the wrong effectiveness.

  • Sfisgard does not list their Armor effectiveness (nor any potential others)

Swords for Peace (99)

  • Same case with Gnunkite’s effect.

Swords for Peace (171)

  • Same case with Sienna’s Wing Spear

  • Rei’s Sfisgard and Anselle’s Gnunkite mutes music at range. (Dragon Breath anim).

  • Mounted units, such as pegasi, wyverns and cavaliers have the infantry footstep SFX instead of the flier/cavalier footstep SFX.

  • Reaver weapons (Axereaver) do not double the weapon triangle on enemy phase. (I have been informed this is an old patch skillsys bug).

    • Addendum: Reaver weapons seem to only inflict -10 hit/avoid (before being doubled) debuff when initiating and -20 hit/avoid (before being doubled) when initiated against.

Swords for Peace (57)

  • Talk bubbles for Supports show up even when such Supports are not available yet.

Swords for Peace (161)

Are characters meant to be able to level beyond Lv20? Roish has so far reached Level 22. Since there is no mention of extended level caps, I wish to know about this.

Swords for Peace (214)

Swords for Peace (226)

  • Long Archer name could be fully condensed instead of partially condensed.

Swords for Peace (256)

  • While not necessarily a bug, Esdin cannot seize in Chapter 12.

Swords for Peace (294)

  • This bow does not grant Counter if its user can’t counter.

  • During Chapter 13, none of the three non-generic characters can trade between each other.

  • Izzy’s skill Amaterasu does not heal.

Swords for Peace (367)
Swords for Peace (374)

  • Chapter 14x’s Strange Axe can be reobtained by saving and resetting the chapter.

Swords for Peace (372)
Swords for Peace (373)

  • Uta is not labeled as a unit when she joins by turn 2, and having her being the last one to move ends the turn automatically.

  • Chapter 15’s houses still have the option to ‘Visit’ for no effect after their secret trigger is fulfilled.

  • Chapter 17’s Heaven Seal can be reacquired by restarting the chapter.

  • Perseus, Uta, Izzy and Varris are not registered as units on Chapter 17, and the turn will autoend without them having acted if left for last.

Swords for Peace (465)

  • Skyhunter Octavia loses access to her Prf.

  • Lamia lacks a death quote in Chapter 19, and will rush onwards despite mentioning that she will stay put and watch.

  • Outdoor Fighter activates inside Chapter 20’s castle (whether it is active on other chapters is not known)

  • Raider cannot visit his house at Chapter 25.

Might have missed this earlier, but is the main story complete (as in, the game playable from prologue - endgame)? I saw something that said the general state of the hack is roughly 75% finished, but how much of that applies to the story itself?

Also, holy cow. Congrats on dropping a game that’s a WIP with OVER 30 chapters. That’s seriously huge! Can’t wait to play this!

It’s not complete, no. There’s still a bunch of chapters and story beats I have planned. It’ll be quite long when finished. I also have to finish writing the supports, fix the various bugs and issues, balance the gameplay, and refine the general experience, so it is still a ways from being complete.

The Fe8 rapier has that description, and it’s effective vs the same things, so I just left it as is. I’ll edit it to make it clearer. It’s supposed to be effective against knights and calvalry.

Turns out that’s a bug with the sword of seals fire animation. There’s a patch that fixes it, so I’ll install it.

I feel like I just left the footstep sounds the same as they are in Fe8, but maybe I screwed something up. It’s not a hard change though, so I’ll give them the right sounds.

I’ll release a patch with these changes, and any others that seem pertinent, in a week.

Thanks for the help!

I’ll be honest, I forgot how bad the Fe8 promotion gains are. Still, they’re even worse here, being more like a good level up.
I’ll try and explain my reasoning. The hack is somewhat split into various parts, with those being the prologue to chapter 6, chapter 7 to chapter 12, chapter 13 to chapter 20, and chapter 21 to chapter 25. Besides the prepromotes, none of your units will be promoted until chapter 12, then in chapter 13-20 you can promote a number of units, but not all, and then in chapters 21 and after, you can promote all your units, but may choose not to. From chapters 13-20, you’re incentivized to use both promoted and unpromoted units, so I wanted to lower the gap in power between the two. Also, since promotion gains are lowered, and promoted units get even less experience than vanilla, there’s actual incentive to not instantly promote, which I think adds some extra decision making.
Promotions are still pretty good. Extra movement, plus increased weapon level which is pretty valuable to some characters.

There isn’t any, sorry.
There is a God dragon and a Devil dragon, but they don’t show up in the story.

Just a heads up, anything that says “effective against infantry” means exactly Knights and Horses as that’s what the terminology for infantry is. At least from what I heard involving the GBA games, so no it’s not technically a bug.

I’ll probably be adding this to play on break at work once I finish FE6, seems very interesting.

The Reginleif, unlike the Rapier, has the correct “vs. Armor/Cavalry” text, + Infantry does mean something entirely different. Infantry are those mentioned as footsoldiers, and the Rapier has an ‘in scriptum’ error.

Considering this text was correct on other weapons such as the Fe6 Rapier and the Fe8 Reginleif, this is highly likely a localization error.

From what I heard, this isn’t just a FE8 description error as Eliwood and Hector’s weapons also say “effective against infantry” so I doubt it’s a localization error and more just how they name Lord stuff.

Even if it wasn’t a typo, you need to take into account the following:

Cavalry does not equate to Infantry. In fact, even if you blur out the ‘cavalry’ part, you still have the issue that Infantry stands for all and any units that are on foot (which is why weapons targeting armors are called that - Effective against Armors). Infantry is a misleading term that came up wrongly in the localization during the GBA era. Other Rapiers, and the later incarnations of the Wolf Beil/Mani Katti in other games show instead a text of “Armor/Cavalry effective”.

Additionally, here is the Fe7 Japanese description for either weapon.

‘騎馬系・重歩兵系に有効’

This, translated, means “Effective against Cavalry and Heavy Infantry.”

And lastly, this localization issue is fixed between the USA release of Fe8 and the European one, with the following text:

Regardless of why things say infantry or not, it doesn’t change that the term was used like so and you can’t just magically be like “oh but this word means something different, therefore it’s translated wrong”. All I’m saying is that the translation isn’t a bug and some people use the infantry description since that’s a terminology that was used.
