[FE8] [Complete] Fire Emblem: Vision Quest (v3 by Pushwall - 1-Oct-22)

Its alright, its probably just for that reason. Like I said, the hack is amazing. It’s amusing to me that this is the first gba fe game I’ve played where the bow unit is one of my strongest units. Vagelis is cleaning up so much.

I just got to chapter 11. Does Bromhilda leave? I’m tempted to try and swarm her. I think with enough of my army I can take her down.

Back on v1.06 I actually missed with a 98% hit chance. Shouldn’t that be technically impossible as 2RN would bump it up to 100%? Apologies if I’m mistaken.

You can’t get two numbers between 0% and 100% to average to 100%. Unless they’re both 100%

Bromhilda leaves after a turn or two, I believe. You do see her again later in the hack.

Thanks! I will just ignore her.

Are you guys using VBA? because I still can not get past the wine and cheese scene.

Hello there, I just finished this hack and had a really fun time with it. I’m really impressed by the amount of effort that went into this game. Hopefully some of the feedback I can give will be useful. To preface this, I played on lunatic with the goal of getting every character and completing every gaiden chapter.

From a gameplay perspective, I thought this hack was pretty solid.

  • Part 1 was incredibly enjoyable as managing your limited funds along with useful utility like warps led to a very unique experience compared to other hacks I’ve played.

  • Part 2 while a bit on the easy side, had many really enjoyable and memorable chapters. It seems like you took the most amount of risks with map design in this part and it certainly paid off.

  • Part 3 was also pretty good.

  • Part 4 has some hit or miss chapters. The chapter where you recruit Sigrid was probably my least favorite chapter out of this hack. On the other hand the chapter prior to that, where you must protect fleeing green units was very fun.

Some members of my final team
VQ-0 VQ-1 VQ-3 VQ-4 VQ-5 VQ-6 VQ-7 VQ-8 VQ-9 VQ-10 VQ-11 VQ-13

Just some closing thoughts.

  • Titus was incredibly well written. His character shift felt quite natural and helped me get invested in the story.

  • I’m not really a fan of how most promoted classes would immediately unlock C rank in other weapon proficiency

  • Titus with the ability to use Nosferatu right after promoting helped him snowball into an unkillable monster.

I use mGBA and haven’t run into the issue, it could be VBA related at this point? Not sure, I’m sorry.

Thanks for giving it a play - that looks like a fun final team, too.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on Part 2. I definitely was experimental with some of the maps, so I am glad you enjoyed them.

C rank was given because I dislike needing to grind with weaker weapons which may not be as effective. I can understand why it feels off, though.

Based on the gaiden requirement list, it looks like I need to keep honeydew alive to unlock chapter 2-1x but deploying her so far on 2-1 hasn’t seemed necessary. I’m assuming she just has to be alive in your party?

Yes no need to field her the previous chapter

I just finished the game on hard mode. Before I give my thoughts, here are some things to keep in mind about my run. I don’t read any dialogue so I won’t be commenting on the story. I also use rewind pretty frequently, sometimes don’t reset for lost units, and very rarely reset for lost side objectives such as chests and villages. The fact that I was able to beat the game suboptimally is a good thing.

This hack is easily in my top 2 FE hacks ever (the other being Sword of Heaven and Earth), and it goes without saying that I found it more fun than all of the official FE games I’ve played as well. Both this hack and SoHaE do something extremely well that no other hack or FE game I’ve played has been able to do, and that is have an engaging and challenging endgame without the need for self-imposed rules. The enemies were tough all the way through the game, but it didn’t feel like I was getting nowhere by training my units–at some points a unit may have been able to one-round some types of enemies but it was never a consistent sight after a certain point, unlike in most FE games.

As for the map design, there’s no denying that this hack really turns up the enemy density in comparison to most other games. But this isn’t a bad thing, I would argue this level of density should be the standard amount. There were rarely points where I felt my units had nothing useful to do, in fact I felt more often that I barely had enough actions to survive and I had to be very efficient in using them. What helped this was the constant encouraging of the player forward. There’s very few non-defense missions that don’t have some sort of anti-turtling incentive. This is something I want to see every hack do. Hacks lacking in anti-turtle incentives just do not do enough to challenge veterans of the series anymore.

I am not going to comment much on the “player unit balance.” I personally think this factor in gameplay is very overblown and what matters much much more is the relative player:enemy strength, which I’ve already said that this hack nails, as the enemies are consistently tough and there’s no one player unit that will solve all your problems.

The one thing I didn’t really like was the fog of war maps. I know the creator has an affinity for fog of war, but honestly there is no reason for there to be this many of them. On top of this, I felt that the fog was too often taken advantage of in annoying ways that only served to increase the number of times I had to attempt the map. Of course I can point at the fog wyverns that appear in many FoW chapters which I know is a complaint you’ve gotten a lot but it’s a very valid complaint. But a more specific example of this is the map in which you get Onderdonk. There’s a village in his movement range right after you recruit him but if you visit the village you suddenly reveal a meticulously placed sniper who can immediately attack him. This is really frustrating design in my opinion, because there’s not really any purpose to the fog. To begin with the mechanic is flawed as it takes away the player’s information and forces them to never take any risks, but when you exploit those risks at every possible turn it just makes the maps really unfun, in my opinion. Still, the fog of war maps were never offensively bad to me but I could see someone really getting turned off of the game if they are playing ironman or not using rewind.

Anyway, this hack is like a 9.5/10 for me. This is pretty much the gold standard of FE hacking and going forward I think we are gonna see a lot of hacks follow Vision Quest’s example.

P.S. sorry for the longpost I’m a hypocrite

Thanks for the feedback - agree with what you said about unit balance. I think a lot of hacks get too caught up in balancing units the player will choose versus making the enemies worth debating the choice in the first place.

Fair point on the fog of war. I removed fog wyverns in 1-7, where they were cited as being most annoying. I can understand why the sniper in 3-3 is annoying, but I also try to hammer in that overextending in the fog is dangerous (such as Cutter calling out the longbow in 1-2). Totally get that FoW is not everyone’s cup of tea though. I’ll be evaluating some of the maps and will see if there are any that need to be changed.

Thanks again for the feedback, glad you had a good time.

Woot, made it to chapter 2-3 on hard mode. Luckily this map isn’t an escape or turn requirement so I can run around and collect all the treasure.

The game also froze on me at the end of 1-3. I’m using VBA so maybe the emulator is the issue. Luckily, I can Start past the cutscene and continue.

Just hit the part in the desert map where the boss does the surprise technique. While I think this was pretty cool and creative I felt like it just ended up putting pressure on me to try and get all the hidden treasure + stealables - basically causing me to turtle and tank the boss with Larisa so I can get everything done before killing him.
