Does it matter, if I say Yes or No at the end of Chapter 8?
I’ve just finished this hack and I had such an awesome time playing this!!! I thought it was the perfect length, good difficulty, great story, and amazing music and characters! ![]()
Thank you for making it and I hope you know that I truly had such a blast playing this! It made me laugh, smile, and even cry a bit. Nice work!
There shouldn’t be a choice at the end of Ch8. Sorry for the late reply.
Hello! I recently got into FE rom hacks and this is one of my favorites! Recently just finished this one and I really loved it! Thanks for your hard work and making the game and story! The epilog made me go “What the F was that?!” In a surprised way, curious if there’s gonna be a sequel or not
I decided to try this on a whim one day and… wow. I am truly speechless at how underrated this hack is. I really did feel like this hack was a more “Story Heavy” type of game at first, but I eventually grew to really enjoy some of the maps and the gameplay.
I’m tRUly astonished at the work that was done.
You should be proud, Shiza.
Major Spoilers of course.
Gameplay
Now, apologies for some of the blunt comments I’m about to make. But I truly almost dropped the game from boredom. However, as a rule of thumb I try to always play until the end to ruview fairly, and I’m glad I did.
The beginning chapters were very early-skill system basic gameplay. And there isn’t anything wrong with that, but after playing numerous hacks with the same mechanics, it does get dull to meander through. To top it off, even playing on hard mode was mind numbing enough to turn my brain off when playing through the 1st act. (I didn’t know of the lore implications beforehand, so it really felt like a slog to trudge through).
Act 2 is where things started to kick up and I started to appreciate what you were doing with maps. I especially liked what you did with maps that were like “move towards units that need saving”. Im a big fan of having squads with NPCs that need saving that you need a larger group to dive into and save. And some of the chapters that had enemies raising and lowering bridges! Wow! Like, genuinely impressed me and I wish hacks did that more. I really liked what you did with chapters 8 and 10. Especially with chapter 10, I loved the side objectives. You didn’t have to cross the border, but you got awarded some pretty decent rewards (and exp!).
Act 3
Easily the highlight of the game for me. Naval Combat felt really damn good to try. Having different named boats and a little armada to control was awesome. Chapter 14 was really cool trying to navigate the puzzle-like on an island. I loved how you needed to spare resources on which ships should engage enemy navys or to help Celine and Marco get off the Island. Chapter 15 onwards all felt really nice to play. Though I will say Chapter 15 felt like some enemies were easy to kill and others took 3-4 units to engage. The MKs vs. Valks was the big one for me. Enemy density was great, but I feel MKs were especially weak. I also liked how the maps were all connected somehow. It really felt like you were travelling between countries. Chapter 17 had a neat gimmick that I liked, but the map felt a bit too short for me. Maybe different stages? Chapter 18 I think was like the pinnacle of lategame for me. When I think of snow, I think of scary ahh enemies and a morbillion flyers I need to deal with, and I think you caught that perfectly.
You also caught the ghostly premonition feeling of the snow, which I also appreciated!
I wish you included a hammerne somewhere though. I really wanted to fix that rescue staff and the warp staff for emergency dives/saving ![]()
I don’t think I have really anything else notable to say about gameplay besides that it was simple, but it was fun.
I have no complaints with units, you balanced everything pretty well. However, I will say the peg sisters felt really weak and I actually swapped between Alice and Raphael for their skills pretty frequently. Good job.
Story
THE highlight of the game to me.
The early premise of the story is the very Fire Emblem. A bunch of kids rise up against an EVIL NATION causing terror indirectly causing harm to the MC and his friends. I found it fine, and Miriam being like a “Childhood Friend” trope fit for me and I enjoyed it. Now, besides that one soldier saying (paraphrasing) “What the, he lives?! I better tell the Empress!”, I felt like I really didn’t understand where the story was going, and I thought it just would have been a “He was a CHOSEN WARRIOR birthed to SAVE THE WORLD from the EVIL KING”.
I was sorely mistaken obviously. And I should have seen the signs, but I was BLINDED.
Also, I guess offtopic but you should have made some boss fights meaner. I thoroughly enjoyed the Rebekka fight.
Now, this is the part of the story where I feel like Roman became extremely boring with the introduction of Rebekka and her POV. Rebekka finds out her husband is attempting to coup the empire, and finds out that actually an ancient witch has brainwashed her husband and some random gegs and were able to take over the castle. I found this much more compelling than Roman finding out he was just brainwashed and that he was royalty, it was a bit obvious from the hints and just from his attire. Playing as an enemy, and moreso a leader of an empire like Edelgard Rebekka was a nice breath of fresh air. I wish that Miriam’s DRUGS would have been utilized more for lategame - a potential in-lore reason to up the difficulty and make it actually feel like you were fighting some crazy steroid’d up nations with a witch’s brew inside them.
And I was really disappointed Lily was killed off so early
. I really wish we could have seen a more angry and insane version of Lily. She was so unintentionally funny sometimes; the gimmick of some random geg becoming so bloodthirsty is really funny to me. I did get her lance though and Sabrina put in a lot of good work with that at least.
Charlie’s secret hit me like a TRUCK. I WAS BLIND AGAIN. There was a young girl calling Roman her father, and the only other character in the game that had the same hair color was Charlie. And it DIDN’T CLICK TO ME. And then I got hit with the one-two combo with LOCHLAN of all people showing up out of nowhere to FIGHT Charlie. Some random GEG of a mercenary who followed me through half the story.
I was able to defeat him though in one chapter yippee
Then there’s the (potential sequel, I hope) where Anna gets fucking ASSASSINATED by former people in the party is crazy.
Overall, I was really impressed with the story.
Rebekka is truly my favorite character in the story. The writing was really witty and I enjoyed the humor.
There were some grammar mistakes as well; mainly with triple Ls in some words or misspelling in some cases.
Either than that I don’t really have any big critiques of the game. I enjoyed myself a TON with Flames of Redemption. To anyone else reading my ruview, please give this a chance. This had blown me away, and I cant state how much I liked the story.
This is easily one of my top hacks
Thank you for the experience!
It means a lot to me when someone takes the time to write such a comprehensive review of something I’ve made. I’m glad that you had a good time with the hack despite some of its issues, and your screenshots got a laugh out of me. (Aldrich files made my day, and I completely forgot I gave Jackson that skill, LMAO)
And I’m very proud of it. I never thought a dozen people would play one of my games, let alone a few thousand. Just the fact that I was able to finish a project of this magnitude, and make it publicly available is surreal to me.
Gameplay stuff
I agree the first six maps are the lowest point of the game. While I’ve thought of shortening Act 1 to make it more palatable, I’m not sure how to pull it off without removing some important context or making breaks in-between chapters too long (for my taste). I had not played many hacks when I made it (and tbh, still haven’t despite being a creator myself, lol), so you could say it was catered to the beginner I was at the time. I understand why those chapters are extra boring to people who are already experienced.
As a small trivia that I’ve never shared before, chapter 5 and 6 (outside and inside of the imperial palace) were originally going to be the same map (with the inside being significantly smaller). Here’s a funny mockup I just made in MS Paint to illustrate how that may have looked like:
Yeah, would have sucked. It could have improved the story’s pacing, though.
Story and spoiler stuff
You’re right in saying that Rebekka is the realest character ever. I enjoyed writing a character so unapologetic and laser-focused on her goals. I think games need more leads like her who don’t try to justify their actions with silly things such as morals, without getting into edgelord territory.
It’s nice that you were able to see some boss quotes, as I probably wrote far more than a solo dev should have. I’m also glad that you enjoyed the (intentionally dry) humor in the hack, since I don’t think anyone has highlighted it before.
As for the typos… yeah. I’ve fixed a lot yet there are still so many of them. I wrote so much of it right into FEBuilder without any spellchecking like an amateur, so it’s natural that it turned out this way. Plus, I would write it very late at night after long work shifts. I like your Hammerne suggestion, so that could become a reality in a potential 1.6 version, along with some bug and typo fixes.
It’s an honor for me to know someone has FoR in their top hacks. Thank you for playing!
Ruview aside, I’ll take this opportunity to talk about something else:
My other hacks
First, since people always ask me, there are two hacks other set in the same world. The first is A Tactician’s Scheme, a gimmicky hack which gameplay loop revolves around hiring generic mercs, and defeating enemies to obtain more gold.
It’s a complete, short hack with only 6 maps. The story is also somewhat connected to FoR, even if it may not appear that way at first. Spoiler: it’s a prequel. I would say this is my true underrated hack, and I wish everyone who enjoyed my first hack’s story should give it a try. I think it’s when I started getting a lot better at making cutscenes.
My third hack is The Divine Curse, which sadly has been on hiatus for a while, and I’m not making it a priority to continue it. Act 1 is supposed to be a prequel to FoR, while Act 2 would have been a sequel. I was close to completing Act 1.
To be completely frank, its future is uncertain, so I don’t necessarily recommend anyone to try it now unless they’re very curious. I would like to at least finish the prequel part and maybe leave it at that, although that doesn’t sit right with me either.
It’s a shame, because I like a lot of the plot points I had planned, but at the moment, I lack the motivation to keep working on it, and I’d rather spend my time with other projects. Or should I release the script as a Wattpad novel?
Regardless, if I have more to share about that hack, I’ll do it in its own thread.
I have more to say, but I have to think about a lot of things. Thanks to everyone who’s still trying out this hack years after I finished it.
Holy awesome will check these out!
I saw this thread on the front page of FEU the other day and decided to give the hack a try. I had a good time and enjoyed the larger maps (some of them reminded me of FE4, in particular the one where you had to seize Axholm castle but could choose to engage Burgundy on the way by entering their territory). Giving the player control of boats for naval battles was a novel idea - I don’t think I’ve seen that in any other hack I’ve played. I chose hard mode and felt the overall difficulty was quite fair.
Here’s my team going into the Endgame chapter with some commentary on each unit. Overall, I liked how unit stats were relatively grounded and did not reach the situation where everyone was capping stats left and right; this allowed for units to feel meaningfully different from each other.
Squad
I had an extremely blessed Roman - he kept getting good level ups well beyond what I expected from his mediocre growths, and he turned into an absolute juggernaut. Having the Provoke skill on him was super valuable because he was able to soak up hits from drawing enemy attention. Honestly, Provoke felt pretty broken because it gave me a lot of leeway in placing my units when I knew the enemies would all target Roman (or Amir, see below).
Rebekka was an excellent all-rounder unit and provided nice support as well, especially in earlygame where the 2 atk/def was more impactful.
Decent healer, nothing stood out too much.
Good support partner for Amir, and upon promoting, was my best utility unit with his good damage output, healing ability, and summon ability. He was a crucial unit in one of the maps with a bunch of enemy magic users where I could stick him in there with Nosferatu and hold them off by himself.
What an excellent unit to suddenly add to my squad! He immediately replaced Sabrina (who was pretty bad) when he showed up. Having Wary Fighter and Provoke made him the ideal bait for enemies, and gaining Short Shield made him actually invincible against physical enemies - he soloed Charlie without taking any damage.
He got some good level ups early so I kept him around, although his stats are really nothing to write home about. Still, he provided solid offense and an A support with Roman. Stacking his skills increases his damage output drastically (+12 total if all three are active).
Good bruiser-type unit with an interesting archetype (kind of like a Swordmaster axe user with his crit rate skill). He had an A support with Jordan, but I had to drop Jordan pretty early on since Jordan kinda sucked.
A flying nuke, and completely invincible with three Nosferatu tomes in inventory.
Just a healer.
I kept him around because I liked his portrait, even though his stats are relatively mid. Lancebreaker was very useful against that one female spear-bearing boss that my other units would’ve struggled to land hits on.
She has excellent stats for a dancer, but I never really used her for combat.
Filler combat unit when the deployment size allows.
I dropped him somewhere around midgame, but since this endgame chapter has a higher deployment limit, I gave him a Master Seal and brought him along. He was a bit too much of a glass cannon which is why I dropped him originally.
Just here for thief duties.
