It means a lot to me when someone takes the time to write such a comprehensive review of something I’ve made. I’m glad that you had a good time with the hack despite some of its issues, and your screenshots got a laugh out of me. (Aldrich files made my day, and I completely forgot I gave Jackson that skill, LMAO)
And I’m very proud of it. I never thought a dozen people would play one of my games, let alone a few thousand. Just the fact that I was able to finish a project of this magnitude, and make it publicly available is surreal to me.
Gameplay stuff
I agree the first six maps are the lowest point of the game. While I’ve thought of shortening Act 1 to make it more palatable, I’m not sure how to pull it off without removing some important context or making breaks in-between chapters too long (for my taste). I had not played many hacks when I made it (and tbh, still haven’t despite being a creator myself, lol), so you could say it was catered to the beginner I was at the time. I understand why those chapters are extra boring to people who are already experienced.
As a small trivia that I’ve never shared before, chapter 5 and 6 (outside and inside of the imperial palace) were originally going to be the same map (with the inside being significantly smaller). Here’s a funny mockup I just made in MS Paint to illustrate how that may have looked like:
Yeah, would have sucked. It could have improved the story’s pacing, though.
Story and spoiler stuff
You’re right in saying that Rebekka is the realest character ever. I enjoyed writing a character so unapologetic and laser-focused on her goals. I think games need more leads like her who don’t try to justify their actions with silly things such as morals, without getting into edgelord territory.
It’s nice that you were able to see some boss quotes, as I probably wrote far more than a solo dev should have. I’m also glad that you enjoyed the (intentionally dry) humor in the hack, since I don’t think anyone has highlighted it before.
As for the typos… yeah. I’ve fixed a lot yet there are still so many of them. I wrote so much of it right into FEBuilder without any spellchecking like an amateur, so it’s natural that it turned out this way. Plus, I would write it very late at night after long work shifts. I like your Hammerne suggestion, so that could become a reality in a potential 1.6 version, along with some bug and typo fixes.
It’s an honor for me to know someone has FoR in their top hacks. Thank you for playing!
Ruview aside, I’ll take this opportunity to talk about something else:
My other hacks
First, since people always ask me, there are two hacks other set in the same world. The first is A Tactician’s Scheme, a gimmicky hack which gameplay loop revolves around hiring generic mercs, and defeating enemies to obtain more gold.
It’s a complete, short hack with only 6 maps. The story is also somewhat connected to FoR, even if it may not appear that way at first. Spoiler: it’s a prequel. I would say this is my true underrated hack, and I wish everyone who enjoyed my first hack’s story should give it a try. I think it’s when I started getting a lot better at making cutscenes.
My third hack is The Divine Curse, which sadly has been on hiatus for a while, and I’m not making it a priority to continue it. Act 1 is supposed to be a prequel to FoR, while Act 2 would have been a sequel. I was close to completing Act 1.
To be completely frank, its future is uncertain, so I don’t necessarily recommend anyone to try it now unless they’re very curious. I would like to at least finish the prequel part and maybe leave it at that, although that doesn’t sit right with me either.
It’s a shame, because I like a lot of the plot points I had planned, but at the moment, I lack the motivation to keep working on it, and I’d rather spend my time with other projects. Or should I release the script as a Wattpad novel?
Regardless, if I have more to share about that hack, I’ll do it in its own thread.
I have more to say, but I have to think about a lot of things. Thanks to everyone who’s still trying out this hack years after I finished it.
