currently struggling because i cannot for the life of me figure out which character slots i can safely overwrite without breaking any cutscenes
im just gonna take a break from that part and work on promo bonuses and enemy growths, i really got nothing
The only boss I can think of who could be recruitable is Brendan… but I see it as complicated.
Honestly, there’s quite a few I could see as recruitable, with differing levels of difficulty in actually doing it. Brendan is one of the most complicated ones because… He’s not a boss that you fight at any point in the game.
I could see Eagler, Erik, Fargus, Uhai, Lloyd/Linus, and Ursula all having a potential route to their recruitment. Though to be clear, I absolutely do not plan on making all of those characters recruitable, I think that would bloat the cast and negatively impact the story in some ways, but I could see a world in which some conversation or combination of actions could get all these people to join Eliwood’s army
I guess making a boss recruitable is difficult (and I’m looking at you, Oliver…) because, well… it’s a boss, you’re going to defeat it, not have tea and cookies. But… it doesn’t mean that some boss could join Eliwood (or Lyn, Hector)
Oh yeah no, I agree. I don’t wanna have a boss that’s just like… You talk to them and now you don’t have to fight them. Skipping the boss fight would just be straight up lame. Really my plan as far as recruitable bosses goes is just making Erik and Fargus recruitable, the former right after you beat him and the latter probably just before Victory or Death.
I’m also heavily considering making it possible (albeit difficult) to spare whichever Reed brother ends up at Cog of Destiny. I don’t want to add a “golden ending” where everyone lives, I still want the Black Fang’s story to be a tragedy, but I do think having one recruitable Reed brother could be cool. Mind you, they wouldn’t join literally the next chapter, they have some shit to internalize first, but maybe they’d join at the same time as Fargus?
I know that one’s gonna be a controversial idea though, I don’t expect everyone to like it.
Yes… I understand. I’ve also planned to have a recruitable boss in my project… although not everyone will like it. (Because it’s also controversial)
About Erik being recruitable… that never crossed my mind, but Fargus could join (maybe in the last chapter). I mean, who wouldn’t want Fargus in their group?
That’s what I’m saying! Fargus is awesome
My general concept regarding enemy quality is like.
I don’t want to make the game significantly harder or anything, but I do want to have stronger enemies mixed in with weaker ones. So my plan is to increase enemy growths by a pretty big number (maybe ~10-20%?) and then adjust accordingly, some enemies will actually be a lower level than they are in vanilla to account for this while others will be the same or even higher.
Hopefully this will even out the XP gain more or less, though it’s gonna take a lot of messing around to get the exact numbers right
Technically not a boss, but recruitable Bramimond would be cool…
yeah final chapter with athos. you can get apocalypse from him
With Wallace, why not let him join at chapter “Whereabouts Unknown” ? where the party starts after turn 5 and saying something “Glad that i made in time?”. It fits since he is the last “Lyndis Mercenaries” and the chapter is in her grandfather castle.
Keep the good work.
That’s not a bad idea, he could be an interesting Jagen type unit, but personally I’m not a huge fan of it for narrative reasons. Wallace joining late adds to his character in two ways:
1. It appears first as a reference to his terrible sense of direction, which is funny.
2. It’s later recontextualized as a major part of his Lyn support, which is one of my favorite supports.
My plan with Wallace is mostly just to buff his stats to make him actually feel like an unstoppable armor knight, cuz as of right now he pales in comparison even to Oswin, who already underperforms by the midgame
If we ever get some sort of skill system for 7 I too will consider unblueing the portraits in an “Update 4” so it’s not just shoving skills into the game as well as lowering map tile brightness- things that they clearly did to compensate for a lack of backlight in those days when the GBA SP didn’t exist.
(BTW, that looks very nice.)
Personally, I had him in the same chapter as Rath, it was pretty simple to move the triggers over to Kinship Bond and adjust the dialog accordingly. Copy pasta’ing a new trigger for Renault to take his place in Four Fang was a little more involved.
I actually believe that there was an attempt at implementing skills into FE7! This topic:
Sadly the author of it, JesterEmblem_EX, announced that they took a break because of frustrations working on FE7’s coding, but there’s still a build available for download on the topic, that can still be tried out and possibly expanded on.
Funny, ‘cause I’ve been watching c-sys for a while and completely missed this.
That is pretty cool, I might poke around, see how many crashes I can add to the pile. ![]()
I might consider adding skills if that patch is functional, but I’ll probably save it for later. I wanna get a functioning alpha build for people to playtest first. Though I do wonder where the best place to post that alpha version would be… Might just post the link in this thread when it’s ready
I have quite a bit left to do before I can release it anyhow, I still need to recolor all the battle sprites and make sure the new character is properly playable throughout the entire game
Speaking of the new character, we got a playable Tactician! The Bramimond recolor is just a placeholder until I can get a custom portrait commissioned.
There are a lot of little things I need to experiment on with them. I want to try and get their actual name and affinity to show up in-game, and I want to give the player three options for their class, but we’ll have to see if those things end up being possible.
I’m going to remind that there is an option for the Tactician to be female. So… Y’know. If you can only use one portrait, you’ll probably want it to be fairly ambiguous.
I’d keep the hood, by the way.
Oh I 100% want them to be ambiguous, that’s my #1 goal with the custom portrait. Like I said, Bramimond is just the placeholder.
Tbh though I don’t really wanna keep the hood, makes them feel too mysterious for my liking, and honestly a tad sinister. I’m just gonna give them hair that covers their eyes like Lowen lol
