Hello there everyone! Welcome to The Lightning Hack (FE7:TLH) main post!

This is a light rebalance of FE7 that not only features new classes, weapons and the usual QoL patches and gameplay changes, but also a fully working Str/Mag split mechanic!
The purpose of this hack was not only to finally cure my itch to work on something for FE7, but also give a base project for new FE7 hacks that can work with the new Str/Mag split, hopefully opening a lot of creative possibilities for future Blazing Blade projects.

Hope that you enjoy playing through it, and here’s the full list of changes:

Gameplay Changes
  • The premier mechanic: Full Str/Mag Split (by Tequila)! All classes now have separate Strength and Magic stat growths, just like in modern FEs. Every unit and class has been properly updated to accommodate this new change.
  • New classes (e.g. Jouster, Battlemage, Warmonk) as well as weapons (e.g. full set of knives for Thief classes, full magic weapons for all 4 physical types). This also include slight overall rebalances of vanilla classes and weapons.
  • Wallace and Fiora are now pre-promotes (General and Falcoknight respectively).
  • Ursula’s class changed to Battlemage. Renault’s class changed to Warmonk.
  • Snipers gain the mono-weapon crit bonus. Assassins can now steal items.
  • Innate crit bonus of promoted mono-weapon classes increased from +15 to +30.
  • Experience gain for healing/dancing/stealing increased from 10 to 15.
  • All effective weapons damage multiplier changed from x2 to x3.
  • Armories and Vendors all updated to accommodate the new weapons (and an extra, late game secret shop is now also available).
  • Supports are now earned at up to three spaces away, and are twice as fast.
  • Recruitment Alternatives: Eliwood can now recruit Fiora on ‘The Dread Isle’, while Karel can now recruit Karla on ‘Battle Preparations’ (Hector Mode+10/5 Bartre is still necessary, but if you have Karel he can simply talk with Karla first to recruit her).
  • Several QoL/Bug Fix patches, as well as new battle/magic animations. Credits of all works listed in the text file inside the download links.
  • Casual Mode & Fixed Growths Implemented: Casual Mode based on Mkol’s FE7 Plus, while Fixed Growths is available on the [FG] patch.
  • New patches available in the download links with the [LEM-HMB] tag, meaning “Lyn/Eliwood Mode - Hard Mode Bonuses”: in vanilla only Hector Hard Mode give HMBs to enemies, so with that in mind these optional patches instead implement HMBs on all hard modes available. Enjoy the increased challenge!

  • The same material on weapons now shares the same total uses.
  • Short Bow is now 1 range, giving bow users option to fight in melee.
  • Secret Book/Divine Icon buffed from +2 to +4 Skill/Luck.
  • Energy Ring now increases BOTH Strength and Magic by +2.
  • Magic Tomes are now of considerable lower weight (except siege).
  • Last chapter S Rank weapons now from FE8 w/buffs (+effective vs Fire Dragon).

would you say this is a top to bottom rebalance for normal and hard lyn/eliwood/hector routes. or is there a difficulty you would say is specifically balanced for playing through and providing feedback?

Despite the new Str/Mag split implemented, it will still be mostly similar to vanilla difficulty wise, such as the stats of the playable units. But it can be considered slightly easier than vanilla, due to all the QoL patches and some gameplay additions (such as 1-2 range knives to help thieves, effective bows for archers to deal more damage against key bosses, etc).

I’m open for feedback on any difficulty! Try the one that you’re most familiar with.


Also important notification. I’ve uploaded a quick fix, same download links on OP, that fixes the following: the Bolt Axe wasn’t tagged properly as a 1-2 range weapon, both Pent and Louise’s inventory were updated, and a few enemy cavs had the wrong class for their weapon.

Simply download it again and patch a new FE7 file while maintaining your save.

First the Sponge Patch featuring a playable Tactician, then that Legacy Patch, and now this?? Man seems like this is going to be a new experience to play the Blazing Blade with this rebalance! Looking forward to the Casual Mode, FE8 Style, new changes, and Lyn’s challenges in her game and stuff. That being said I’m currently playing the Sponge and Legacy rebalance patches so Im gonna give this a shot!

I see plans for the Fixed Growth mode in the upcoming plans, I follow project intensely. Very excited for this; but I’m happy to play by applying my own patch for such a thing for the time being!

I think i’m good on that. I want to try out rebalance romhacks for a new experience and a new fresh adventure for pure casualness. I appreciate the recommendation tho

This has been a fun hack to play. I enjoy the updated graphics and choices you’ve used for animations and classes. One bug I’ve found so far, Aion’s bolting is still equipped even when Kishuna is present in 19x. If you have animation on and he targets a unit, the game freezes on the battle screen. If you turn animation off it proceeds like normal and he will miss since he is not supposed to do any damage. I can provide a save if this helps.

Thanks a lot for the report, don’t worry about the save also, I managed to replicate on my end.

What happened that I pinpointed was the ‘Melee And Magic Fix’, a base patch that the Str/Mag split patch works on; it had an older version implemented, that made enemy tome users still target units while inside the magic seal aura, resulting in the “fight” that freezes the game.

I’ve implemented the proper updated version, that also fixes it. After playtesting it, enemy mages will now not target you inside the aura like in vanilla again, preventing the freeze.

It’s already up for download! Same links in OP; just patch in a new FE7 file with your save.
Not only that, but this also reminded me of two other QoL patches that I had forgotten:

  • Battle Stats w/Animations Off & Hold L Button to Skip Battle Anims (both by Tequila).

They’ve been also implemented in this same update, listed on the credits text file.

With this, all of the important changes were finally implemented, and I now consider it complete!
I’ll still keep a lookout for any possible reports of glitches that might need to be fixed.

Here’s the full list of final changes, again all done and ready to play on the OP links:

  • Full FE8-Style Portraits (by Eldritch Abomination), w/fix for generic soldier frames.

  • Casual Mode Implemented: Based on Mkol’s FE7 Plus Hack, a new option will appear at the start of either Eliwood or Hector Mode to activate it for that save file. While it also had the option on Lyn Mode in FE7 Plus, there were reports that, if you do activate it in Lyn Mode, then you cannot change it in Eliwood/Hector Mode (and vice-versa). Even then, Lyn Mode already has a semi-casual mode where units that get defeated there still appear back on Eliwood/Hector’s, hence why I implemented it only on the main modes.

  • Fixed Growths Implemented: Works as a separate patch, the one with the [FG] tag at the end of the file name. More information on how the patch works here.

  • In Search of Truth: Cleave Bow drop fixed to appear in both Eliwood and Hector Modes.

  • Imprisoner of Magic: New Holyspike tome added as droppable, appears on all modes.

  • Several enemy generics had their class changed to some of the new classes (e.g. Myrmidons to Vandals, Soldiers to Militias, Archers to Hunters, etc).

  • Fixed some enemy mages in Lyn Mode having slightly higher Defense than normal.

  • The Dread Isle: Besides Florina, Eliwood can now also talk with Fiora to recruit her.

  • Battle Preparations: Besides Bartre, Karel can now also talk with Karla to recruit her, without the unscripted fight (Hector Mode+10/5 Bartre is still needed to make Karla appear, but once she does AND you got Karel, you can have him talk first with her instead).

Finally, to get Hector Mode’s A Glimpse in Time (Ch.19xx), you still need to both level up Nils in Lyn Mode and defeat Kishuna in the chapter before, but the requirements are easier:

  • Nils’ level experience requirement now reduced from 7 to 5.
  • Kishuna’s Magic Seal class has -2 less base Speed and Defense.

And that’s everything, do let me know anything else you might need to know!


Something else in regards to what was asked before; if I’ll immediately make a new hack/project with this one as base, I actually don’t have any plans to do it, again I’ll simply keep a lookout for any new reports of possible bugs or glitches that might appear and I’ll need to fix.

If anyone likes this hack and wishes to start a new project using this one as a base (full hacks, reskins, PMEs, etc), feel free to do so! Since it was created to not only play well by itself, but also to have all of the implemented classes/weapons/etc available for use.

So as a more official writing, I fully allow anyone to start a new project using this one as base.

Is V 1.0 the most recent patch on the dropbox? Couldn’t tell, download doesn’t end in the patch version.

Two bugs I’ve found. Eubans doesn’t have the rank to use his weapon so he is unarmed. Eliwood’s promoted lance palette is off.

Was with first patch in DL, I downloaded what’s there an repatched, the Eliwood palette issue is still present.

The Readme text file marks the version right at the first line, it’s v1.0 no problem!

As of the bugs, I noticed what is happening with Eliwood’s promoted palette, will be an easy fix that I’ll push soon. Now the other bug; just to confirm, do you really mean Eubans, the boss of ‘Kinship’s Bond’? Because he already has the weapon rank necessary to equip his Spear.

Ah I meant Pascal, crazed beast.

Update: The new patch is now up! Same download links on OP, simply download and patch a new FE7 file, while maintaining your existing save.

This fixes both Pascal’s weapon ranks, as well as Eliwood’s promoted palettes. Not only that, but a few other palettes from classes were also updated to be better looking. Enjoy everyone!
