[FE3] Heroes of Light: A new complete and modern translation/localization patch!

Alright, finally beat the game as of literally like 40 minutes ago.

Fantastic Translation! I would love to read the original script just to cross-reference and see what liberties were taken on the whole, but I really do think you sold the tone of the story and the impact of the characters really well. The Archanaean cast does so much with their comparatively little time for characterisation, got a great feel for this cast thanks to book 2 as previously my only exposure to them was through fe1 and fe11 with heroes adding some little pieces here and there. Book 2 especially felt really well done, I think the story is what made me blitz it in just under 2 weeks (well, that and the pretty easy difficulty of fe3 overall, it seems). Thanks for updating the translation and bringing this to a new audience!

For some reason, attempting to patch via rom patcher js simply doesn’t result in a working rom.

Are you using the latest patch?

I think you might’ve just patched it wrong then, I tried it myself just now on that site and it worked fine. Did you accidentally check the “add header” box or something?

Awesome to see FE3 getting some love. The dialogue looks a lot more natural and the new fonts are very pleasing. I think this means I should give this game another playthrough soon!

There are several typos within the screenshots. I can point them out if you’d like.

Don’t forget about Doluna over Dolhr. Kind of want 1 that turns Draug back to Doga & Lorenz back to Lawrence. Same with Samto if his names “Samuel” in this patch.

Updated the patch folder with a notable fix: the garbled graphics that would appear in the opening crawl (except when it runs on a fresh start of the rom) are now gone! Now you can view the legend of Guardian God Naga without distractions.

Side note, shout out to Guardian God Naga. When are we getting this alt in FEH?

I’ve updated the patch folder for another fix and some various typos, but it comes with an amusing story.

Turns out I forgot to test the Watch staff all this time, and nobody ever noticed because nobody uses the Watch staff. While fiddling around with it and fixing the text, I noticed some odd stuff.

For those not aware, the Watch staff’s purpose is to reveal rooms hidden underneath roofs. When you use it, the room and its contents will be shown for a few seconds while the screen is tinted white. You’d think that the staff needs you to target a roof to use it, but this is not the case. Instead, Watch’s usability is on a per-chapter basis: it can only be used in chapters designated for it, being the ones that have roofs (chapters 14, 16, 17, and 22). But within these chapters, you can select any part of the map to use it on, and it will function normally, but won’t reveal anything.

However, a strange oddity occurs specifically in chapter 14: if you use Watch on one of the rooms after it’s been revealed AND after opening a chest, it will cause the chest to appear closed. See below, where Marth has opened these chests, but Watch makes it appear closed.

This would also theoretically occur in chapter 17 for the chest room, but I didn’t end up testing this. It does not occur for the chests in chapter 16 though, since there was never a roof above them. See these chests that were opened and remain opened.

I also just want to point out the general strangeness of the Watch staff. You get this thing in chapter 10, but it can’t be used until chapter 14. It has 5 uses, and only 4 chapters where it can be used (one of which, chapter 14, having zero enemies in its rooms). It kinda reminds me of how Rescue is handled in this game, since both are staves with very clear spots where the game wants you to use them. But Rescue is applicable in a ton of different scenarios, while Watch isn’t. Watch is even unused in FE5 and FE6! The whole palette tinting thing brings to mind the FE3 v1.0 rom exclusive bit where they left in a debug map palette editor via a button combo. If you wanted, you could use that button combo to make maps tinted white just like Watch does. It almost makes me wonder if FE3 Watch would have gone unused, too. Just a bizarre staff all around.

Oh yeah, said button combo for the curious. Only works on v1.0 roms of FE3. Enjoy coloring!
Select “view map” while in preps.
Hold L, R, and one of A/X/Y.
Press up or down to adjust RGB values (A/X/Y are each one value).
Press L + R + B to reset.

Lots of cases of words not being capitalized & what not. Basically if its a word goes past ellipses in game with a space in between it, then it should be capitalized. In-game Example: “We… may have to make some sacrifices” Fixed: “We… May have to may to make some sacrifices”. I don’t blame you for making this mistake since other official FE games make this mistake too. Nevertheless, this is grammatically correct.

But you don’t capitalize after an ellipsis unless you’re actually starting a new sentence or using a proper noun, just like any other punctuation.
Like in that example you chose, the sentence isn’t being interrupted and started anew, it’s just being paused. Like this:
“You’re some kinda… monster?” vs. “You’re some kinda… Monster?”

First one is correct because it’s continuing the sentence that the ellipsis was simply pausing, not ending.

If we’re to be consistent with official FE entries, there should be no space.
“We…may have to make some sacrifices.”
This is how FE11 does it. I do know that in other languages, though, like Spanish, the space is included. I guess it’s just a unique English thing. That said, I personally prefer no space.

But if we forgo that, then “We…may have to make some sacrifices” versus “We… may have to make some sacrifices” is a matter of style.

As for ellipsis followed by a space and a capital, like, “You… You can’t do this!” I do think it’s different from, “You…you can’t do this!” (or, for the sake of what’s in the project, “You… you can’t do this!”)
The first is like a pause in thought, like, “You… (Okay, now I know what I want to say) You can’t do this!” and then the second is like a long stutter from just being so choked up. “You…(c’mon, say the words already!)you can’t do this!”
This is also something FE11 does. The soldier in the prologue says to Marth, “But… Well, I’m not privy to the specifics.” He wants to say what exactly he may know about what’s going on in Gra with that “But…”, and then sort of cuts himself off, to essentially say he doesn’t know enough. They’re like two separate thoughts. “I’m gonna say what I’m noticing… Actually, I don’t know enough that I should do that.”
Then in chapter 20, Nyna says to Camus about him fighting Marth: “It is…it is unbearable.” That’s Nyna being choked up, and struggling to get out that one thought. If she were to say, “It is… It is unbearable,” that’s like, “It is… (…Oh, I got it! Now I know what to call it!) It is unbearable.”

That’s my take on how to handle ellipses in all English writing.

Personally I think not having a space after ellipses in any context just looks weird, so I just never do it. But yeah, if the word after the ellipses is uncapitalized, then it’s a continuation of the same sentence, so the ellipses is just a pause.
