[FE3] Heroes of Light: A new complete and modern translation/localization patch!

Another quick little update: at the suggestion of @JohanMikes , we’ve added back in the exp symbol from JP (with some small edits to align it and stuff). Looks fancy! Patches in the folder have been updated.

It would be sick if you could translate the debug battle test menu (look it up on TCRF, I can’t add links yet).

Patch folder updated for a minor fix. The book 1 opening narration had its final line being cut off, and for whatever reason, trying to repoint this particular text file causes it to look like complete nonsense. So I retooled the final line slightly to work better, as seen below. The final line would’ve been just saying that Marth went to Talys, but this narration is immediately followed up by the chapter 1 narration saying that Marth went to Talys. So this should be fine.

Something may still be bugged within the opening code, because when the game restarted, these garbage lines started to appear.

Yeah, for some reason, those extra lines of garbled text seem to appear only when the tapestry rolls a second time, or from a reset like that. The regular text still appears, so it’s just an extra line below it of weird stuff. Not sure why.

Heya! First off, huge thanks to the team behind this for releasing this translation. I’ve been learning Japanese myself for some time but for first playthroughs I prefer reading in a language I understand as a massive story-appreciator. Tried playing fe3 a few years ago but fell off of it for one reason or another, so playing both books all the way through for the first time now!

That said, I don’t know where you would like any spelling mistakes messaged outside of here, and if you’d like me to post each one as I come across it or not, but for now I just beat chapter 5 of book 1 and noticed Nyna saying “conitnue” rather than ‘continue’, just a small typo.

Once again, huge thanks guys, appreciate having this more localisation-focused effort! makes the text flow really well and even if there are some lines that feel a little forced, I do really like the humor and flow of it all.

In here is fine (you can post multiple pictures under a dropdown to avoid cluttering the thread). Alternatively, the discord server linked in the main post works too. Thanks for playing and wanting to help!

Thanks to the team who made this. It let me experience fe3 for the first time. I just beat book 1 and noticed a typo. Marth talks to Caeda and there is a typo in this dialouge. Silly is spelled wrong.

Typo is here

Thanks for the report! Patches in the folder have been updated now with a number of corrections that people have brought up.

It’s been almost a month, but I just want to thank everyone who worked on this. We now finally have fe3 with proper official names. I just finished the gba fan remake of fe1 and wanted to finally begin book 2 for real. When I first played fe4 I bought a custom cartridge to play it on original hardware and I was planning to do the same with fe3, until I remembered the latest translation still didn’t have official names. I figured I would have heard about a new translation for fe3 if one had been released but still decided to check just in case. And boy was I happy. Finally, FINALLY. I had also heard from people who played book 2 in japanese that all the fan translations for the game didn’t quite live up to the quality of the writing in japanese. They said it didn’t quite do them justice. So seeing you mention that this was because of text space and that finally this new translation doesn’t have this issue is so great.

I do have one question though. Given the fact that some bugs were reported here and there and not all of them appear to be fixed as of yet (I’m really not sure) should I wait a bit more before getting myself a custom cartridge with this rom? I wouldn’t exactly be able to update it, so that’s why I’m asking. Note that even if you told me “yeah go for it!” and I ended up finding bugs I wouldn’t blame you at all, nor would I consider it your fault. I specify that because one could be very hesitant to tell me to do it at all out of fear of “being responsible” if anything bad happens lol. At the end of the day I would be the one to make the decision.

I’m also unsure about which version I should use for fe3. Is there some place where I can see what the differences are between 1.0 and 1.1? And for this patch specifically, which versin would be best? Is there any difference between headered and unheadered?

I’m just as happy to have a new FE3 patch as you are, bruddah. It’s really been a long time coming. The truth is that if you’re going to play this on a custom cartridge, there’s always the risk that it might get updated in the future and you won’t be able to easily update your cart. That’s just the natural risk you take from playing something new in this way. Thankfully, the only bug (that we know of) is that opening tapestry bit reported above, which is purely visual and doesn’t happen on a fresh start of the game. Otherwise, it’s primarily been the occasional typo here and there for updates. I just updated the download link earlier today to incorporate some more fixes, so you can download it now to get the most recent version.

That said, I have no idea how this will work on a custom cart, if at all. I have zero experience with stuff like that, since I always use an emulator instead. I guess if FE4 project naga worked, then this FE3 patch should work too? Since both of them expand the rom size a bit. But I’m hardly the expert on this subject, so don’t take my word for it. All I can say is that the patch itself is perfectly fine, nothing gamebreaking or stuff like that to worry about. If you want to play it like this, then go right ahead.

As far as version differences, I don’t know where all that is documented. My understanding is that 1.0 is generally buggier and has some debug things left in, while 1.1 fixes and removes that stuff, so it’s the safer bet. Headered vs unheadered is only for making sure your rom and patch file match, though. Otherwise there’s no real difference.

Ah thank you. Typos don’t really bother me, especially since usually those that remain are hard to notice.
I played book 1 chapters 1 to 4 and compared this new script with the other scripts as well as fe1 and fe11 and from what I can tell this adds a lot of sentences that weren’t there before? For example the opening to champions of aurelis talks about guerilla tactics being all they can really do without the proper force to fight back and how they’re essentially just buying time until help arrives. Hardin himself mentions his hit and run tactics being effective but not fulfilling as well. This is all great and gives a much much clearer picture of what things were like before Marth arrived in Aurelis. But from what I gathered, this was all added in this translation patch? Don’t get me wrong, this all makes perfect sense lore wise and was most likely what kaga would have described had someone asked him. The opening also talks about the history of Aurelis itself which once again is nowhere to be seen in any other version, despite all being canonical information from expanded lore iirc.

So this appears to be more than just a translation patch but also a sort of re-write? Extended script similar to Radiant Dawn’s hard mode japanese script? Or is it that all the translations we had of fe3 were always much shorter than they were in japanese and all this extra info was always there?

Don’t get me wrong, this still read wonderfully and I’m pretty sure I much preferred this over any other version of this story, but maybe labeling it as just a straight-up translation patch can mislead people a bit. It’ll make people think this is what the script always was in japanese. In terms of getting a proper view of the evolution of fe stories and its writing it could create major misunderstandings.

For example, had this been the script I had to compare to shadow dragon when I first played it, ohh boy I woud have thought much much lower of fe11 than I already do. It would have led me to believe they did nothing but make changes for the worse and ruined the story of fe3. Or I would say that fe3’s writing was where Kaga-era writing was perfected instead of fe4.

But at the same time I’m completely torn on this because this is so good that I really don’t want it to start being labelled as nothing more than a “fan-fixed” story or even worse, fan fiction. So I feel like I’d be really cool to have some more clarification on the translating process.

I want to make it clear that I mean all of this with complete respect and once again, I’m pretty sure this is much better than any of the scripts we have of fe1 and fe3’s story.

I didn’t label it as a pure translation patch. The title of the post says translation/localization, and the main post body describes it as such. This wasn’t really a secret. As I mentioned in the post, additional lines are added primarily to incorporate other official material where it fit (such as Aurelis’s history as you mentioned), emphasize things that are already there (such as Hardin’s guerilla tactics), or just to make connections/ideas clearer or flow better. Archanea is already somewhat infamous for a lot of its worldbuilding being in supplementary material or otherwise not very out in the open, so it makes sense to put it somewhere more visible. The ultimate goal was always to make the script more lively, and that meant being pretty liberal with it. But I’ve tried to be open about that in the main post.

You’re right. I guess I just didn’t expect the additions to be this big. I underestimated how much would be added. In a way, we still have the older translation patches that are extremely faithful, but with outdated names lol. It would just be weird if for example this script ended up on the wiki instead of the old one for example, but this is out of your control and has nothing to do with you or the translation patch.
So this is pretty much “what if the ds remakes had actually improved the script instead of leaving it as it was” in a way? Not counting the localization. But even then I think this is better. Or I guess it’s much closer to what radiant dawn did with the extended script by adding more lore.

What were the sources for these kinds of additions? For example, where does the guerilla tactics info come from?

I’m positive that was mentioned somewhere, but I can’t for the life of me remember. Nor is it easy to source things on mobile, of course. I’ll try to get you an answer tomorrow on that. Generally though, stuff that’s in FE11 or supplementary material like official guidebooks/interviews and the like. Sometimes FEH or FE12 where applicable. There’s still interpretation at the end of the day though. This was somewhat modeled after FE5’s recent patches and their approach to beefing up dialogue, though FE11’s raw prose was also a big inspiration (and in some cases is used verbatim where it’s just the best option for a scene).

Yeah I’d be very curious to see that. There’s a reason I didn’t immediately catch on that it wasn’t in the original.
I took a look at book 2’s intro and saw the exchange about Melladus between Jagen and Marth and was very thrown off considering the tone the original fe3 had lol. Are there many other instances with humor like this in important story scenes or is this an exception?

Just want to clarify that when I said “There’s a reason I didn’t immediately catch on that it wasn’t in the original.” I meant that it fits so well that I never would have thought that it wasn’t in the original. I thought it was always there.
Wanted to clarify because if read quickly, the opposite could be interpretated and thus be seen as very rude.

(Apologies for the delayed response on this, I was very sick yesterday)

The guerrilla tactics stuff for Hardin actually comes from the JP script for the Archanean chronology at the very end of the game. Couldn’t remember it off the top of my head is all. So putting that into the part of the game where he’s actually doing it makes sense, yeah?

Malledus I talked about at length in the main post. He is pretty much the one major “added joke” thing in this patch, since I just think he’s inherently kinda goofy on his mere existence. That one bit at the start of book 2 was more to transition out of that is all. There’s added wordplay and gags where appropriate, but the intent was mostly to be more subtle. Malledus was the big fat exception because I find his existence inherently silly.

Though I also think he’s somewhat emblematic of the tone difference between books 1 and 2. In general, I find book 1 to have a somewhat lighter tone (not just in this patch, I mean the source script). Which sounds weird to say, since the world is being conquered by Medeus and humanity is enslaved and whatnot. But I more mean in how it’s delivered, since the actual script is pretty sparse, especially compared to book 2. Chapter start and end dialogues tend to be pretty short in book 1, and you’ll go whole chapters at a time with Marth not saying a word. It all makes it feel more by the numbers, for lack of a better term. Like it’s just a standard “hero saving the world” shtick, and everything’s gonna be fine and all that. Whereas book 2 has Marth talking in every chapter, with much more emotional investment in the stakes of the story. It’s not just about saving the day from the big evil dragon, now it’s about Marth’s trust having been broken and steeling himself to kill his former friend. Especially because Marth is actively talking in the story at all times, it overall is much more personal and thus feels like a bigger and more serious conflict, even if the War of Shadows technically was the larger war. So silly stuff like how we handled Malledus would not fly in book 2, which is why it’s largely not there. Again, the line at the start with Jagen was more to transition out of that, which is why it was placed at the beginning of the book.

Anyway, for a quick example on a scene addition that does add some humor: Marth’s recruitment talk with Merric in book 1. They’re supposed to be childhood friends and all that, and Merric in his FE11 Wendell recruitment has that bit about not blowing himself up yet, so we basically combined those for a little gag with Marth, remarking about a past furniture ignition incident. Fitting for these guys who are supposed to be chummy, so it’s a good way to show it since it fits for the scene. And it’s also kinda funny, but more meant to be amusing, you know? Wordplay, allusions, that sorta thing. The main post shows another one that was added, rather subtly: Phina suggesting Navarre should wear red instead of purple was added here as a nod to how Navarre did eventually change his outfit to red in the future, befitting of his Scarlet Swordsman title.

My friend is playing through this on a slightly outdated patch version since they haven’t felt the need to update, so this may have been fixed already, but I can’t seem to see a changelog with the exact typo fixes per patch listed anywhere. If it has been fixed, please ignore me~

(“sorcerery”, which I assume is supposed to just be ‘sorcery’?)

Nope, hadn’t been reported yet. Just fixed that (and a second instance of the same typo elsewhere) and updated the download link. Thanks for the report!
