idk, just some generic mining equipment

I think you could do the turns in as little as 2 tiles.

Some inspiration from Golden Sun.

Lanterns!

I played it about … 13-14 years ago and I can’t say I remembered it at all other than the abrupt ending, and liking the battle theme and general battle system. I’m glad y’all enjoyed it though.

Anyway; going back to the city tileset for a bit because the railroad tracks on the cave tileset carry over to the city tileset and use essentially the same palette.

I think the radius of the turn is too small, personally. The tracks themselves are based off of RPG Maker 2000’s and from the same Thomas the Tank Engine game the train was modified from.

Looks completely fine. Won’t look weird since it’s not like you’re going to see the train moving over it.

It was driving me nuts, so I couldn’t really resist…

…and then I put it in the cave tileset.

Tileset layouts;

I cleaned the city layout up a little bit so that it’s a bit easier to read, though I do admit it probably could be better.

Caves;

I will probably be making battle platforms for the cave tiles because there’s significantly more terrain types in play with the caves (the stalactites use forest/mountain terrain, for example, and the larger rocks use peak) than you might be expecting.

I need to revisit palettes 1 and 3, though, because they’re barely used. I want to use palette 1 for not just glowing lanterns, but for glowing crystals also. Might be tricky because I didn’t take enough colors out of the walls. I have a surprising amount of space on the object palette still, so I’ll probably add some more mining equipment.

I went and added a second row of carpets and a second throne that uses the same palette the ground does, because why not. Works with the gray cave, not as much with the brown one.

Also, I fit both water tiles in without too many issues. I’m more partial to the one on the bottom left corner, but there’s nothing stopping anyone from using both on the same map at the same time.

Green/purple crystals, and some orange ones. They both share a palette with the lanterns, which means that I can have it so that they glow a little.

I love type 2 animations. 8)

So this tileset still is using 4 palettes for everything except 2 tiles, that use palette 3, but I honestly don’t like those tiles (image) and I’m likely to take them out, but I’m not sure what else I could do with them that I’m not doing with other palettes.

There are four type-2 tile animations I have that are usable; one for shining lanterns only, one for green crystals, one for purple crystals, and one for blue crystals.

… anyway, here’s what I have right now.

Not sure what else I need to add, or what I should add.

Probably going to send this into the repository soon because I think it’s perfectly usable as-is, but I’d like some color palette suggestions.

Sent this into the repository with 6 palettes included. Here’s 5 that I did…

… and then I got a palette from @TheAtlas;

Tileset is free to edit. I strongly encourage sharing any palettes that people make for this. 8)

Might be making battle platforms to go along with this also, though I think some that I’ve already made might be mostly fine.

This is a pretty awesome cave tileset ngl. If I knew or remembered how to put new tilesets and recolor them I would use this on some romhacks I’d like to make.

It was cool seeing how the tileset slowly evolved into this

There’s a bunch of tutorials out there, I remember searching for one and using it. Really straightforward process though.

I’d love to do it again, and there’s a very good chance that I will! :smiley:

@TheAtlas was talking to me about ambient sounds about a week or so ago for a thunderstorm. I told him I’d do it, I’d just have to find something to import for a rain sound that was good enough for me, and arrange a new instrument bank for it, blah blah blah.

About that – turns out the FE8 attack and spell sounds are NOT fixed frequency, which saved me a lot of trouble. So I just imported FE7’s rain sound into the same instrument bank FE8 uses for magic and most of the attack sounds… and had some fun. :smiley:

I may not have needed to import that rain sound, it might already be in FE8, because in the test rom I used, the sound data number started with an 8, not a 9.

Making another test map for the more vanilla-style metropolis tileset. Made quite a few more subtle changes and I’m not sure if the trees should be oriented like the lightposts are or not. Basically, should the treestump be on the top or bottom half of a tile, and how should that impact the tile type. See example below

I’m making a pretty big deal about it because this is what that tileset looks like right now;

The sloped gray brick walls are placed much less nonsensically on the Mineshaft tileset and I really should fix this one so that it’s at least similar to that because this (see below) is messy, IMO;

Suggestions and the like to all or parts of this post are appreciated, particularly if you want to use this tileset or a variation of it (because variations are likely) for your own projects.
