Challenge Mode Stuff

All of my questions so far have been with tech issues, but I want to share a more laid-back question here and get to know yall.

First, cutting to the chase, the reason this post is in the Design label, what challenges have the community made up over the years besides Ironman? What are your favorites? The memories with said challenges?

As for me, my favorite is Pseudo-Ironman. It’s like your standard Ironman, no resetting chapters, but if I get a Game Over, I don’t restart from the very beginning. Maybe there’s a different name for that, but idk. I don’t really like restarting an entire chapter for a single unit like a standard Fire Emblem run, but the thing that kept me from playing Ironman is the overwhelming perfection it demands to prevent going back to the very beginning. So, one ironman I was doing, I didn’t go back to the start because of a Game Over. Honestly, this improved my mood so much. From my experience, it gave me an appreciation I never had before of bad units. For instance, when I lost Marcus in FE7 I was forced to default to the frail Isadora, but I was able to do a Harken support with her and give them both a bunch of dodge. This, and I finally could beat Battle Before Dawn, the bane of all ironmans, because I could immediately get back there. Well, that was my example, and forgive me if this should be in Community instead of Design, but I’d like to know what different playstyles are out there.

Edit: That same run, Eliwood chose violence, it was bizarre. He did not carry my run- he WAS the run. I can show you his final stats if you wish.

One of my favorite ways to play is also an ironman variant (oh that’s a relevant phrase these days…). I play on Casual mode, but if a unit dies, I’m not allowed to deploy them for the next chapter. This lets me use some different strategies, try out different units, without feeling SUPER punished, but still gives me a consequence for poor play. If I really want a strong combat unit for the next chapter, I need to keep them safe, or else make sure I have someone who can fill their role temporarily. I did this on an Engage playthrough recently and it was a lot of fun

I believe it’s called a soft Iron Man, while restarting when getting a game over, it’s called a Hard Iron Man.

A way I’ve spiced up my many playthroughs of Fire Emblem, is I would set a spinwheel using this website, and adding different entries that would take effect for every chapter. For example, I would spin the wheel for chapter 1, and it lands on “I can’t use my Jagen”, so I can’t use my Jagen for that chapter. For chapter 2, spin the wheel, “I can only use Heal staffs”, and so on.
