So I’m just gonna say it right now. I LOATHE the Fire Emblem Heroes mobile game. Boring, power creep infested gameplay followed up by singlehandedly the worst story in the history of Fire Emblem- FATES AND ENGAGE INCLUDED- it’s my living nightmare. Books 1-6 I really don’t like, book 7 actively made me want to use a devil axe on 0 luck, and book 8 is… actually pretty decent so far. It also doesn’t help that I genuinely hate p*rn.
I bring this hate message up because I had an idea for a funny romhack about the lords of their respective games revolting against Askr and all the Heroes characters to return to their worlds. I’m still working on Fort Pinewood (probably gonna bypass level secrets for now to get the dang demo out), but while this is in my mind, I have a request. Based on what I know, there’s not a lot of availlable portraits of Heroes characters in Klok’s repo, so if I could get portraits of most of those guys (Book 7 characters banned, book 8 characters optional), I think I could make this work.
I’m just going to say it, this hack is going to flop bro. Why? Because you can’t make a joke out of something you hate because then it stops being a joke and instead becomes, y’know, you being a hater, which you can automatically do without having to resort to comedy to make your argument. Look, I understand you and I empathize with you. I think we all do. FEH sucks as a game that wants you to play it. But in my humble opinion that you are happy to disagree with, if you’re brainstorming a way to waste precious hours of your life making a hackrom whose sole purpose is to shit on a mobile game that, in the grand scheme of things, hasn’t done much to hurt you or the Fire Emblem franchise as a whole…you’re letting your hatred consume you, man. I don’t think that’s healthy for your psyche. I’d honestly scrap this before it becomes a Lovecraftian monster that feasts on you until you’re nothing but a raisin of who you once were. If I were you, I’d much rather write an essay about why I hate FEH, post it somewhere, and move on with my life. That would be a far more efficient and effective use of your time than a full-fledged hackrom. But that’s just my opinion, coming from someone who still hasn’t even entered college after three years of being out of schooling, so take it with, like, ten grains of salt. I otherwise wish you a good evening

This seems like a bit much. I mean romhack ideas come from anywhere. Idk if this is purely a hate project, or more like a springboard to make something.
I say make a hack with passion, and if your flaming passion is disliking Heroes greatly, make the most gosh darn polished hack you can with that passion.
I suppose that’s a yes because I was full-time from when the game came out till around mid-2019 when the Nah and Yarne banner came out, wasted a whole iTunes gift card on that shit, got absolutely nothing, and ragequit after that, and then I was on-and-off up until like late 2022, primarily coming back whenever my husbys got in like Noah and Febail. But that’s not what I mean. I would imagine that since Mr. Goblin wrote out his whole hate story about FEH, then this hack is being made out of pure hatred and nothing else, and that’s a destructive mindset to have. Sure, he can make the most polished hack he can out of that fuel, but it’s still not going to be a fun product at the end of the day. But fine, I’m in the wrong because I spent money on FEH. Say what you want about the background behind it, but I think a story about the emblem worlds against Askr to go back home is actually a pretty cool idea.

In fact, I did something similar in my own hack where it’s revealed at the end that the summoner Kirin has been gathering Fire Emblem heroes from across time and space to control the space time continuem and erase all Kaga games, and your army dukes it out with his stupid-looking dream team.

You have a hatred for Fire Emblem Heroes, a perfectly reasonable thing, and that’s a passion. But you can’t make a game out of hatred - the “path to the dark side”. You need to turn this into something you love. You need to be having fun with your hack. Make fun of FEH in a way that’s not basically yelling about how much it sucks, but as a sort of satire cleverly showcasing all of its faults. If you’re not making something you find fun, pleasant, and enjoyable, then other people probably won’t find it fun, pleasant or enjoyable.
I think this is a great premise. You should write a story about why the Fire Emblem characters resent being forced into this messy crossover universe, and you might even have something to say about human nature or society underneath. If you go about having a message, definitely be sure to be subtle - people don’t like a soapbox message.
Of course, the real easy and fun strategy is to just make a lighthearted story showing how ridiculous Fire Emblem Heroes is, but have the characters take it all oh-so seriously.
Even if your hack is a joke, if you take the time to carefully think it out and put some care into it, it can still be something meaningful.
Nice to see support for the idea! I didn’t expect to get a paragraph of harsh backlash as my third idea, but I didn’t expect this either.
The offer still stands for portrait submissions as a lot of Heroes characters are unavailable in repos and I kinda need those to make this.
You shouldn’t’ve said “Shut up.” I can respect you for trying to be polite, but trying to state an opinion with salt never works. While I agree that something shouldn’t be made out of pure hatred (I’ve performed and seen that mistake happen multiple times,) it’s something else entirely to dramatically attack someone for even thinking of doing it. And if I make a full-blown project, I’m going to put some love into it, even if it’s an anti-Heroes satire.
One thing I feel is important for you to know is that it is very unlikely for you to find the portraits you need.
I never tried my hand at making pixel art, but I know these take time and effort to be made, and it’s unlikely people will make them for free, specially since as you said it is still an idea, so there’s no guarantee that the project won’t be dropped later on, which would make all the effort put into them be somewhat wasted.
The fact we even have the repo that is so well organized and extensive is a miracle by itself honestly.
You will either need to work around the limits of what the repo has, learn how to make portraits or comission someone to do them for you.
