- Storge
My top 5 Right now would be
My top five would be:
Andromeda
Cerulean Crescent
The last promise
Sun God’s Wrath
Project Ember
My five favorite fangames (from the top of my head)
Storge - May not be a niche pick, but in being short it manages to have most of the strengths and little of the weaknesses. While on a second playthrough I do think the final map becomes a tad empty towards the end it is still a great game that manages to deliver what Fire Emblem is in a concentrated dosis of goodness.
Vision Quest - What can I say, it made me discover a new way to love Fire Emblem, using save states every turn to try and get a perfect playthrough, turns that seemed impossible turning into elegant stunts pushing the game to its limits. The shove system really does wonders. A game so good that afterwards playing FE9 felt bad as I was spoiled by this.
Undertale 2 - A comedic gem that manages to not have incredibly funny jokes, but be genuienly creative too. I prefer this to Undertale Yellow any day of the week. It also had an effect on my Fire Emblem Fangames as Undertale 2 introduced me to Nazrin who became the protagonist of my Christmas Game.
Super Mario 64 Co-op Deluxe - Managing to turn a singleplayer game into a multiplayer one with such ease is a great achivement. It really uses the fact that Mario 64 has a community to its advantage to place the community in the game itself, be it with the joys of social multiplayer or the many mods both pre installed full games and the many, many skins.
Pikmin^2 - The definitive version of Pikmin 1 and fanservice that feels tailor made for someone like me who wasn’t satisfied with how Pikmin 4 handled fanservice. It includes an extra hard mode campaign, a build in two player mode, a build in randomizer. It transforms Pikmin 1 into a definitive package.
I guess this is for FE Fangames but considering how many amazing fangames exist I thought of others too, I unfortunately haven’t played that many fangames, and I have beaten even less than that.
Oh yeah letsgo
1- cerulean crescent (good story that keeps you interested, great turn-by-turn gameplay due to nice init design)
2-Code of the black knights (good story with multiple choices and hard gameplay that gets good when you get going)
3-Bond Destiny 1(great map creativity + solid story + broken/fun units made this enjoyable)
4-Pokemblem (fascinating translation of pokemon into fire emblem, I wonder if a pokemon conquest rework with that engine could ever happen)
5- Hetja’s quest (I like roguelikes :3)
In no particular order:
The Hag in White: Unique concept with good gameplay and writing.
The Morrow’s Golden Country: The Fire Emblem hack that feels the most like it could be an actual Fire Emblem mainline game. It hits almost every part of the formula well.
Bells of Byelen: Thracia but in GBA. Great writing especially for a telephone hack, and very solid gameplay to boot.
Code of the Burger King: Funny meme hack. Made by the same person that made TMGC so the gameplay is top tier. It’s also legitimately hilarious a lot of the time.
Cerulean Crescent: Probably the most creative use of Fire Emblem mechanics I’ve seen in a hack. Also, a very strong and nonstandard Fire Emblem plot.
Honorable mention:
Bound Destiny 1: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon nostalgia go. Good writing and fun if unbalanced gameplay with a metric ton of options. The first game in a trilogy and the only one of them I’ve beat so far, but could see the others being lumped together here or up in my top 5 if the quality remains the same in 2/3.
Some FE Romhacks are played were completed or almost finished, but I would love to tell you mine.
1# Vision Quest
First FE romhack which I found from a website, looking for official FE games to play. The story, music and the characters is what sells it for me. For the story its an alright story fit for a FE game not leaning too dark or sinister, like how there in different parts of the story as well to introduce some of the characters and creating an arc for them. Characters were top notch and some became one of my favorite even in my playthrough. For the music, first time being introduced in custom music, love how some of the custom music fits some part of the chapter even the Dream Vision chapters as well , has my favorite music even if I never played that game before.
2# Morrow Golden Country
Another Romhack I think should be getting some love and surprised not some people talk about it(I understand cause this game came out 2025ish).
This romhack just has the best gameplay changes ever in a Romhack which I like, love that everything has a description/guide for a good understanding of the game considering this will be a hard romhack game if you don’t understand the whole game. That alone isn’t the only thing I like but the characters though have some of my favorite and the design on each of them are high in quality makes me love them even more. For the story it feels okay but still give it 7/10 for effort.
Highly recommend playing this game if you like gameplay changes.
3# Dark Amulet
This hack has so much potential, the story and characters are what makes me enjoy the game. Feels like it should’ve been a real FE game when I look at it. The story was enjoyable for me to enjoy the game feels too dark and sinister but that didn’t stop me at all. Characters has some fun stoy development in the game especially Vorgus, Shorn, Elyse, Harlan, Julia makes the game feel more alive.
4# The Unexpected Caller
Another FE hack I like, its a crossover of FE6,7,8 turned into an actual game, whats not to love even if I can’t understand much of the plot of this game plus the gameplay is enjoyable. Also this game gives me a lot of subspace emission vibes from Super Smash Bros Brawl.
5# The Last Promise
Popular FE hack of its time. Totally one of the best rom hacks ever made one of the hacks I encountered that motivated me to playing FE romhacks. The story, gameplay(if you minus the late difficulty) & the music were top tier.
This is basically how I actually review these fanmade games made by other people.
Vision Quest, Dark Amulet, Hag in White, Drowned King, Sacred Echoes.
(Removed)
Code of the Burger King: The first ever Fire emblem I ever played the hardest difficulty on; It was a special type of hell that I loved.
Morrow golden Country: Fun game, enough said
Speed Pmu by CrimsonFox: One of only Pmu I saw get complete, and by god was it beautiful.
The Four Kings: It may not have the best story, but the gameplay (like Fates in a sense) was amazing.
Fire emblem New Mystery of the Emblem and fire emblem genealogy of holy war only first arc though
Many people’s said New Mystery of the Emblem is bad, for me because Kris have personality unlike other created characters who have background but only talk silently, that make me can connect and empathise with kris struggles.
In no particular order:
The dark lord and the Maiden of light.
Visión quest.
Dream of five.
Cerulean crecent.
Drums of War.
