Working on a FE8 reskin (The Fallen One)

Hi FEuniverse. I started working on a FE8 reskin now that I found some time. I don’t know if reskins are still played in this time, but I am not that great at hacking, therefore, a reskin. It will be a bit more than just a reskin, as I aim to edit some things. Even though the project is just developing, I thought I share my idea here because I would really like to give some of you the chance to submit a character that can replace some of those from the original game. And once I have the cast set or at least some characters, I can go ahead and move on with other things, like story text editing. I just don’t want to go on ahead with my characters and then have trouble inserting all the new information; I have no idea how I would do that, so it would be manually and slow, and I would like to avoid that.

What I can say about the story is that it will be based on Norse Mythology. I wanted to start out with a reskin featuring characters from several mythological worlds involved in some big conflict, but I decided to just go with Norse for this one.

Anyway, the story will feature Reginleif, a valkyrie who’s fallen from Lord Odin’s grace; she is the main character. Ragnarok, the end of all things, is already midway through its course, and the gods have brought their troubles to Midgard. The Reskin will tell Reginleif’s story, which will see her traveling through Midgard during a dark time when evil has grown tenfold due to Ragnarok. Some evil deities are at work there like never before, seeking to grow their power in order to survive the event, and Reginleif, with but a handful of einherjar that she kept in her valkyrie pendant before she fell from grace, seeks to find ways to postpone or even thwart Ragnarok, all while she helps those suffering from the war.

If you’d like to submit an einherjar/character, even a map boss, feel free to join. Or if you wish to be part of this somehow, also join, I can always use help. You can add stats and other stuff to your character if you want, but it is not required. It would be nice if you do submit your own mug and also a class. Note: a few vanilla characters will not be available for the taking because they will feature characters from mythology.

Honestly, this sounds pretty convincing, and I might try to make a unit for this :333 Although I do have a couple of questions on how this will function:

  1. Who exactly isn’t available for the taking? I mean, I would assume Eirika is Reginleif, but I could also see Ephraim and maybe the other Magvelian royals at least, which is like a third of the cast and not very fun tbh. I think a list of the available slots would do wonders.
  2. In terms of character creation, what are our limits? Do we have to stick to the figures already established in the mythos? Can we make our own? If so, what are the cultural restrictions? I would imagine someone like Hera, Venus, or Ra being unfit for this setting.
  3. A follow-up to the previous question: How many characters are you planning for this in total? Will it only be the 34 replacements, or is there room for more?
  4. Another gameplay-related question: What are our limits for the gameplay side of things? Are we restricted to only the vanilla classes? Can we add our own?

And as a final note: I hope and pray with the blessings of all the gods that Reginleif uses the Reginleif in combat cause that would be so damn fun :sparkling_heart: Plus, hey, at least it’s better than the Rapier :face_with_hand_over_mouth: I wish you good luck with this, and I’ll be back with an Einherjar :two_hearts:

Thanks for showing interest, AthenaBaer. I will answer as best as I can.

  1. You are right, Eirika is Reginleif. Ephraim and Seth also taken. So are Vigarde, Lyon and Valter, and the other kingdom rulers. But most recruits are up for grabs, as well as most enemies. I can always move pre-ordained characters to enemies in order to open up slots if needed.

  2. No, you can create a character of your choosing, set to have the role of either einherjar or Midgardian warrior/ess, or an enemy if you choose so. For this reskin, which will feature only Norse Mythology, yes it would be unfit to have other mythological figures. If all goes well, that will probably be my next attempt: a reskin/hack featuring a story with several mythological figures involved. Cultural restrictions would apply to characters being the medieval type, viking type, nobility, etc. Just don’t make characters too fixed on our actual era, keep them fantasy style.

  3. I was gonna leave some enemies out, as not all are needed. Even if there are untaken units, I will simply use them as default einherjar that I made up. In other words, around 25-30, perhaps all available. I’ve been wanting to learn how to add more, and also how to add more weapons, but I haven’t touched that yet.

  4. It depends what the custom class can do. Feel free to come up with something new, if I like it, I will definitely apply it.

Final Note: Ephraim’s spear, yes that would be nice to see. :slight_smile: At this moment she has other weapons according to her class. Not gonna spoil that yet, but I might change my mind and have her be a lance wielder. Thanks a lot, I hope all goes well, and I hope to deliver this ASAP.

Update: I have been busy moving the story forward. I have worked it up to chapter 4 so far. I know screenshots are missing at this time, but I will submit some once I get to where the tower of Valni is unlocked.

So this is some kind of PME but with Story implications? this is quite interesting

@AthenaBaer, the character looks great. You submitted more stats than I know for a character, but I will change what I can. (Allow me to explain: I would have no idea how to add/change the Boon or Bane.)

Also, there’s no problem replacing Franz, I am just concerned whether the triple attack can still work. But, I can always have the vanilla pegasus knights be pegasus knights, that is, if I can’t reassign that special skill to other characters.

@Gero Sorry, what is a PME? I have a slight idea but not really; is it a hack?

Lastly, for AthenaBaer and anyone else down the line who might join, your characters don’t have to be original, they can also be related to those found in Norse Mythology. Example, you can create an original character but having family ties to a god, or other Norse character. If this is the case down the line, I will have to set a minimum of sorts. I just don’t wish to have Thor have five extra sons or daughters, etc. :sweat_smile:

Additional update info. So far the game is working fine with all the additions/changes I have made to it. It’s starting to look a little different than the vanilla, with a few extra scenes I have added. It’s got the skill system integrated, but there are some errors shown in the status screens, nothing major, but a word that says blank instead of Skills and another ??$ on another blank page. If when released as a playable patch, hope that is not an inconvenience. I will also try to fix that.

I mean, the Boon and Bane are simple, really: It’s just +/- 2 in the listed stat, a real easy change in the Character Editor; it’s a similar thing with all the 1’s too, just gotta make sure the personal bases match up with the numbers in parentheses :two_hearts: And on the topic of the Triangle Attack, there’s a checkbox in the Abilities section of the CE that allows for that (specifically 1 in this case, two boxes above the NPC tag). There’s more to it than that, of course. Still, I can figure that out…eventually :sweat_smile: And the three Pegs don’t need to be Pegs cause anyone can do the Triangle Attack, with the caveat that it’s better on pegasi than anything else, so I’d recommend just unchecking that box if you’re planning on changing their classes.

As for what a PME is, it’s a Pick My Edits ROM, where someone starts one up and people can list changes they’d like to see for that ROM (essentially what you’re asking for here); most of the time (like 90% or so), it’s just characters with maybe a few custom classes and weapons thrown in for good measure, but it’s fun because it’s the most powerful reskin possible, not just by editing the ROM, but by garnering a community and letting them decide your fate; 9/10 :333

I have an update on the project. I’ve gotten the story up to chapter 7. Now I just need to work on chapter 8 and the finale of the first part, which ends with the tower of Valni appearing. Here’s a breakdown of what I have worked on.

More than just adding text, I’ve done some editing in some of the chapters; inserting some events, removing some, etc.
Created several main characters {mugs} for the story.
Successfully got rid of the blank word that was appearing instead of Skills; also edited some missing text in that info screen.

Hope to have the first release ASAP.

Hello! I’ve been a little busy. I managed to find some time to come and reply. I’m glad more of you have shown interest in this project. :slight_smile: I see that some of you have submitted more than one character. I should have been specific in my first post, I really forgot to add that I would be taking one submission per member. :frowning: Sorry if this causes any inconveniences, but it is just to give other members a chance to sign up later, if they wish to join and replace a vanilla character. So, I am afraid some of you will have to pick one of several characters.

Pyoro, thanks for explaining to Shadow that Eirika was already taken. Yes, sadly she is, so are the other characters mentioned. As to inventory, some of those items will work and the character will have them, but I might not add some of them. In the maps, as the player, you will have all bosses dropping items, as well as other characters, like sub-bosses.

Okay, that rule would be nice and all…but how many do you genuinely expect to show up here? Do you expect twenty-seven more members to join in on a project that was dead silent for two whole days before I showed up and that needed clarification as to what this project even was, not bothering to provide a template of your own for how you would like to see our units displayed for you to put them in, and not even using the latest Skill Systems patch to include the Magic stat aka one of the backbones of two of my units and supposedly at least nine others so the builds wouldn’t even work because apparently “I keep getting loads of errors that I don’t want to ask people to help me figure out”? What a way to fumble a bag, good sir. I suppose I’ll pack my bags, delete my units, and move on to greener pastures. I’m already swamped as is. I don’t need a third ball and chain wearing me down. Good luck, I guess.

Yo OP I might give you a Submission, I really like the concept of this hack, don’t let anyone to let you down. Fuck whatever Athena said, this project doesn’t need SkillSystems, it would add bloat and make it harder to balance. If you want I can help you with guidelines so people can create their characters the way you want!

Also if you want the Str/Mag split, it is an stand-alone patch.

I might recommend you to do a new post though, since this one is a bit tainted now.
