What makes you wanna play a hack?

Been thinking about this. When yall see a thread what makes you wanna play it? the concept, the units? Other player’s replies on the thread?

I think its a mixture of story, gameplay and maybe sheer hype. I dont really play too many hacks for some reason, I guess…

Probably a combo of fun gameplay and writing. I’ll probably play a hack if it has atleast one of these two factors

Hacks that are kinda more under the rader usually gets my interest. Most of the time they suprise me with gameplay, or story concepts I get hooked on.

what mood I’m in

1st Encounter of a hack, probably aesthetics and how refined it is

Everything else is usually based on others experiences/word of mouth and whether it interests me or not

Usually what hooks me to a hack is unique units and classes, along with cool gameplay. I also enjoy hacks that are meant to be de-makes or anthologies of mainline FE games.

Gameplay, units and story. I especially like if theres some gimmick thats not seen normally. 2 immediate examples are Restoration Army with all the trainees you get or the pirate one where you pick the order you take on the chapters.

When I see that shiny [COMPLETE] tag on the title I find my interest piqued.

Honestly, a lot of it is aesthetics. I love seeing unique portraits and assets, that’s what grabs my attention first and foremost. Fun and unique gameplay ideas come next. I especially love hacks that incorporate fe5 mechanics into the GBA engine (Bells of Byelen my beloved). Once I’m actually playing, I have a hard time maintaining interest unless the characters are strong, and I find that I can excuse a lot if I’m invested in the little guys on my screen. 90% of the time the characters are what get me to stick (Drums of War my beloved).

I’m waiting to see when a hack gets released that doesn’t just look and feel like more GBA Fire Emblem. When I see a hack like that come around, I’ll probably be interested.

thats kind of impossible with the way the engine works…

I usually play a hack that looks interesting with no specific factors, but what usually hooks me is if Lyn is the central character, or if there’s avatar creation in the hack, I have not found a hack that has both yet, and I don’t have PC access right now so I cannot make one for myself

I mainly go for the gameplay, since I’ve noticed I’m biased towards going to the ones that are just meme hacks or ones that are just edits of vanilla FE GBA (i.e making all characters into knights). I really like being silly and not very worried of anything. Of the ones that are more normal hacks with more going into them, I’ve only went for the ones that are based on the stories official FE games (FE8 Reforged, and Sacred Echoes), mainly since I don’t have too much interest going into the ones that tell a new story of their own, feeling as sometimes there might be a little bias towards them being much better experience than anything else. But well, maybe sometime after most of the hype has died down I’ll go and check some of these romhacks and see if I end up enjoying them. After all, that’s how it happened with some games or franchises that I’ve seen around more or less after the time they were getting more popular, like with the very FE franchise back in 2022.

Although, I do wonder why I like making walls of texts lol. Sorry about that. Or not.

I’d play anything that makes FE fun in any different way from the vanilla games, really. Having a new story is also a big bonus even though I drift more towards gameplay-focused hacks

You should know that’s not true with some of the stuff I do.
Then again, I guess mine aren’t actually hacks.

Good art (I’m very shallow), and the general vibe of the comments in the thread.

Also i will play anything that is released by Not Quite Rodents (Parrhesia and Lumi)

I was referring to games made in the FEGBA engine
