What do you like about FE Revelations?

What do Rev fans like about Rev? The only time I played FE Fates Revelations I disliked it. Then again I don’t remember much about that game, and I was severely burned out on FE at the time from doing every FE in a row in a marathon.

The best thing about Revelation is that you can’t buy it anymore

The sandbox aspect was pretty cool. For me Rev is middle of the road FE, some nice and cool stuff, but also some utterly stupid stuff

Unlike the majority of the other fans and smart asses (no offense), I enjoy the Revelations game for what it is, however, since the modding community came in, I’m really interested in the big mods like Abyssal Bloodline and Silent Waves and I admit that these are better than the vanilla. At the same time, without Revelations mistakes, the modding of that path would’ve became known today so I thank Intelligent Systems for making an awesome DLC. Kinda in the middle of playing the GBA romhack rebalances (Project Sienna, Blaze & Thunder, Plus & Enhancement patches, and Sacred Stones Reforged) at the moment and maybe Thabes Overwritten (big ass Awakening mod), so I might come by and play the Revelations mods again once I have that in my time and collection.

I’ll be generous and say that I liked their idea of making it the gimmicky route and that it lets you control most units of the other routes combined. Unfortunately much of the execution of the former wasn’t enjoyable to me, which prevented me from fully enjoying the potential of the latter.
The main thing I was looking forward to was playing an epic four-way battle involving all factions, but then they all team up against you and I was even more disappointed. It’s just how expectations go sometimes.

i think it’s really disturbing how badly paid game developers screwed up the game balance of rev (random shit tier units like odin/niles, corrin disgustingly overleveled for the majority of earlygame, extreme midgame gold shortage without buying skirmishes) but at the end of the day i did enjoy rev because it gave me access to all my little scrungos and i got to have kaden/selkie and keaton/velouria in my army at the same time, as well as build up every single unit in the game if i wanted. like mentioned earlier, the sandbox nature really benefits. still think it’s disappointing and concerning how poorly made it was though, for what is supposed to be the “true route” as admitted by devs

it’s a fun sandbox game with maps that are generally as good as most of the vanilla games with fun characters and allows you to use the Birthright cast in a game that doesn’t punish a lack of bulk as hard as Birthright does.

Fates came with a system that lets you essentially transfer units and skills between games in the Unit Log.

In Rev, you’re given access to almost every unit from both routes. I used to spend a lot of time making different builds and poking around in the My Castle area. Experimenting with the various DLC and paralogues is a bonus I guess.

I don’t really have much to say about the story, that’s old territory. Same goes for the more notorious maps.

That said, I do like Valla’s aesthetics, and at some points, it feels worthwhile. Some of the gimmicks were cool in concept. I know the snow map is hated, but the rewards were worth the slog to me.

I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, though. It’s an acquired taste.

Access to so many classes all with unique animations. You even get different animations based on whether the weapon used is Nohrian or Hoshidan. It’s an absolute treat!

I hate that the Unit Log doesn’t let you unlock supports.

If you mod a character with Paragon to unlock his supports on a route you normally can’t get him on, does recruiting that character from the Unit Log let you unlock his supports?

Out of all of the 3 routes, Revelation (not “Revelations,” that’s an RD chapter) definitely needed to extend its length the most. It’s DLC, so I feel like it kind of deserves to. Corrin has to rally not just 1 but 2 kingdoms by their side, and so we barely get enough time for Valla itself. On top of that, the Vallite conspiracy, while a natural element in my opinion, felt underbaked (sadly, TWISTD somehow felt even worse). People complain about Engage recycling the 4 Hounds, but if there was any title where I’d say that recycling bosses should, not simply could be a good idea, it was here. If Anankos can revive prominent characters, why not do it again and again to emphasize the brutality of Corrin’s golden path? Also, Izana should have died by deliberately saying the V-word to Takumi. That would lend more credence to the Vallite curse and give him a stronger character attribute at the same time. But enough about story.
Revelation is interesting because even though it recycles maps, it also experiments with gimmicks to make things more interesting. However, beyond the very questionable balancing issues, Revelation’s gimmicks deciding to be a midway in terms of strategy level between the GBA-like Birthright and the brutal Conquest, while well-intentioned for the sake of the sandbox nature of the title, often results in wonky execution in areas where you really feel like they actually did know what they were doing. For example, Chapter 18, Veiled Kingdom, is definitely inspired by the final map of Thracia 776, which already had a rehash in FE7 because it’s that good. You’re supposed to split up your team to occupy several switches simultaneously while reinforcements continuously pelt at you. It perfectly disincentivizes turtling, juggernauts, and low-manning. Sounds like a perfect map, right? Except you first have to waste a turn or two getting your Dragon Vein royals into position to open the pathways first. Other chapters like the Sumeragi map in Chapter 25, Blades Drawn, also have time-wasters like the automatically moving horizontal elevator. You get why it exists, but it still feels frustrating.

Chapter 13, A Lost Peace, is somewhat understandable. Sure, it wasn’t the big faction war people really, really wanted to see. But consider the fact that you essentially have to program not 4 but 5 separate allegiances due to the fact that allied NPC/green units already exist, so you would essentially have Player, NPC, Foe 1 (Hoshido), Foe 2 (Nohr), Foe 3 (Valla). On top of that, you also have to crunch the math of multiple enemies duking it out against each other. And it’s not just the players, the devs would have to make sure the chapter doesn’t devolve into a playable cutscene due to the multiple factions hitting each other. Are you really going to program a whopping 5 allegiances just for 1 map that can become too easy to play, too boring to watch, or both? Clash of Queens in Engage FX had this issue where there were so many enemies that they straight-up disabled animations by default. The wiki even mentions that Fell!Ivy actually has nerfed movement. Just another detail that shows even the seemingly simplest of concepts can require the most complicated of solutions. And that kind of sums Revelation as a whole. A sandbox game going for a more idealistic golden ending in reality has so many criteria that it needs to succeed at to stand a chance. If you don’t feel like playing Revelation, I at least recommend reading the Crown of Nibelung manga and listening to the Fates Drama CDs.
