Finally managed to fit my ass and nuts into a gear. Here’s my dedicated review.

Gameplay: 0/10

This caused me copious amounts of physical pain. Do not try this at home. And please call me an ambulance I can’t stand up and reach my phone.

Story: 1/5

The story is literally a guy listening to what people on the Internet told him to do. Honestly a total excuse plot.

Presentation: 0/5

Tries way too hard to shock the audience by displaying copious amounts of blood and focusing on the victim’s pained expression. Genuinely nonexistent presentation besides that, it’s just real life with no special effects.

i paid you a fine, crisp two dollar bill to give this a high review. and you threw it all away.

As it so happens, this time there happens to be a tie for first place. Congratulations to The Pen, by Frog, and Pillars of the Horizon, by Olivia and MommyRexacuse! You have all made supremely intellectual games utilising real design, and are the winners of SIGURD!
Ava Turr Ace Attorney, by knabepicer, came in third place.
Unfortunately, Chronicles of Varna was disqualified due to being unwinnable without using glitches.
As usual, the reviews for SIGURD will be hosted on an external website. All reviews, scores, downloads, and links back to FEU posts are present.

And now, my closing statement.

With two romhacking contests under my belt, there naturally was desire for a third when the time came. CELICA went quite smoothly, with the only issue of note coming up being the treatment of Lex Talionis entries. With that in mind, I decided to start the contest a small bit later this year. A few minor tweaks to the rules were made, but nothing that majorly affected anything. I then took a look at the calendar. Fire Emblem’s anniversary was a Sunday, that would make a cute deadline.

It was also Easter Sunday. Setting the deadline on a major holiday was in hindsight a mistake, and I should have started things a week earlier or later instead. 16 entries is still a good turnout, but I do know others were making things before time caught up with them. I stand by not extending the deadline, but in future I’ll take better note of things such as Easter’s timing before setting the deadline.

As for the actual submissions, the standard was somewhere in-between MARTH and CELICA. The Pen and Pillars could not be seperated, and in the end SIGURD concluded with a tie. Almost every entry does have some good ideas within them somewhere, and that’s always a good thing to see.
Thank you to everybody who took the time to create a submission. Thank you to everyone who played through and gave feedback to entries: there was a lot of this this year, which was good to see. Several entries received patches prior to the deadline, which shows the value of getting feedback. And for anyone whose submission fell through, I still thank you for trying, and I hope your work gets to see the light of day somewhere.
Overall, I think SIGURD went decently. The main iteration on CELICA was publically naming the judges each progress report in the interests of more transparency. There will always be room for improvement, however. Any feedback you have, I would like to hear, whether it be about the reviews, the chapters, the rules, or anything else that is worthy of comment.
That’s all for now. Perhaps we shall meet again in another contest in the future. The CELICA FEE3 video fell through, but I’m open to the idea of a SIGURD video still. Wherever it may be, I hope to see you all again some day.

if some of you haven’t, and were waiting for reviews to be out first, i implore you to give all these a try, people poured heart into em all and i’d love for more people to see what came out of this.

Whoa Serge also has a closing statement

Y’know, I saw CELICA, thought the idea was cool, thought the entries were pretty cool, decided I’d want to give opinions on the Internet next time it came around. Thanks for giving me the right of official opinion giver, Mr. Darrman, and thanks to all you lovely game makers for having cool game ideas. And apologies for making yall wait so long so I could find a gear to put my ass in.

Here’s my encouraging quote:

The world of game making is like a kitchen. The doors are always open, the ingredients numerous, the recipes only limited by your own imagination. You’ll probably burn a meal or two. Maybe even the whole kitchen down. That’s alright. You’ve got plenty of time to learn. And hey, you keep polishing those ideas of yours. One of these days, one of them will become a 20 star meal, and you’ll look back upon your journey and think that, perhaps, the blood, sweat and tears you poured in was worth it to get this far.
That said, Arses in Gear II is the worst thing I’ve ever played and I am personally banning Fringus specifically from the kitchen. Bro thinks two dollars could pay my hospital bills…

I don’t have many closing words. I appreciate the opportunity to play video games and write my thoughts about them <3. I also hope that ppl could enjoy my reviews the same way i enjoyed the ones written for marth and celica.

anyway olivia/mommy and frog should duel in wood wars to decide the real winner

(this joke was made in the judge discord but i stole it)

Reading this at the army rehabilitation center (they fucked up my knee :frowning: ), I’m glad I performed fairly well for my first time participating and only my second ever hack. I personally thought the quality of the submissions was really high and every time I played one of the others I was worried if mine could even stand out - at minimum, I didn’t expect first place anyway.

First place shall be next year :raised_fist:

Congrats to Frog, Olivia, and MommyRexacuse for placing first! And I gotta say, I fully expected The Three Princes to be placed in the middle of the pack, so it being in 4th was a pleasant surprise to put it mildly lol This was fun and I’m hoping to participate next year too!

Man, the judges didn’t even do a bracket in Wood Wars. FOR SHAME

I’m disappointed in myself for ranking the same as last time (the exact halfway point both times), and very discouraged by it, but it’s better to leave that there and not ruin the mood further. I take issue with certain judging decisions but thats also something to just leave be I think.

Congrats to the winners! There was some high quality stuff here.

I feel you. I didn’t join in this time and ended up not getting a score because I didn’t submit a project, which I felt was definitely an underperformance. However, I’m looking forward to playing some of the top-placers and submitting next year!
