How is your process of creating OC characters, are you using references or do you draw your characters out from scratch?

Thanks! Most of my artwork these days are from commissions, so with that usually the commissioner already has at least a basic design or idea in mind. I then gather up pixel art reference for various things like the pose, the hair, the face, the armor, etc.
If the commissioner is more light with details/gives me more freedom, I usually try and make decisions that reinforce their original concept/character so that it’s visually clear and coherent. Poses are a good way to do this.
