SmithPlays Fire Emblem: I Made The PERFECT Fire Emblem 7 Romhack Discussion

Kinda ranty but:

I agree with a lot of the opinions said here but a lot of you express them in such an obnoxious and snobby way that I almost want to disagree purely out of spite. I get that the language he uses rubs people the wrong way, and maybe he could have done a better job being open about the assets he used and crediting people, but I can’t help but feel like many of you don’t realize how annoying and rude you come off when expressing your opinions. At some point, it goes past giving criticism for the choices made in the hack and devolves into hurling insults or mocking both SmithPlays and others in this thread.

Noticed my screenshots getting crossposted into this thread from r/FE, so I figured I’d give my own two cents, which is perhaps a mistake. Played through Lyn hard and Hector Hard.

It’s fine.

I am notorious for hating rebalances (anyone who knows me will know my contempt for Project Ember and the like) but this doesn’t even go far enough to make the kinds of mistakes they do. It’s your standard rebalance with a few extremely questionable design choices (like Nergal bringing along about 15 druids and heroes to gangstalk you during the first part of Light, or both versions of PFoD being combined into one terrible megamap)

Don’t know where this thousand million whatever hours of development/playtesting comes from, I suspect that number was trumped up to sound cool in a youtube video.

The only reason this is getting any attention is because a youtuber made it. It’s not any different from any rebalance you can find trawling this forum that gets about 70 downloads and promptly forgotten about. Just because a person with an audience made a thing doesn’t make the thing automatically good or interesting. It’s okay to not have an opinion. However, if you’re going to have an opinion, please go away and play it yourselves so you can form a cogent one.

I’m not going to weigh in on the “lack of respect for FEU” issue, as none of my assets are in it, so I can’t really comment. I think assuming exploitation is a bit much, but if it bothers you, I don’t think you need to worry about it, as this rebalance will likely be forgotten about outside of the audience of whoever made it before long, and I don’t think randomly branching to FE is going to amount of much of that nice youtuber money as it is.

(also there’s way less money in FE rebalances as opposed to Pokemon rebalances as FE games are actually good)

I do agree that the discussion has kind of lost the plot a little bit. I personally created the thread because I wanted to hear others opinions on the gameplay mostly. However the crediting and general over exaggeration of the video itself did make me roll my eyes a couple times personally. The crediting thing, I think is an actual issue. The word “clout” was brought up? I think I may be misunderstanding, but that’s a silly way to describe wanting recognition. I love the amount of effort and dedication the community has had to provide peoplewith free resources to use. Scrolling the animation and portrait repo is fun as hell, not to mention the coding and patching projects that I couldn’t imagine doing myself like ever. Calling wanting proper recognition for the people who deserve it “clout” is quite silly in my opinion.

I would like to hear more opinions on the gameplay. I’ve not quite finished yet, but I have played through it proper and it’s quite over tuned at some points. It’s hard to feel as if units are really that different. Most changes are minor at best. Like how much will changing ninos magic growth really help her? She’s going to cap it anyways. The changes to the lords do affect them, but I don’t use Eliwood anyways so I can’t comment on it. I really hate that they left in the rain and snow in for a couple chapters. I shutter at the thought of replaying pale flower of darkness. The worst part is the snow, it’s so slow. Other chapter changes are pretty minor early on, just better enemies, with a bit of too much spam for my liking, but that’s probably just fe7 being fe7. I have yet to see the surprises for the final map, but we will see.

I don’t really care to get too deep into the conversation, but because I’ve seen concern over lack of credit be brought up, I will mention that assets, graphical or otherwise are credited with in the project’s Github which is linked in the YouTube video:

Aside from getting Zane’s name wrong, nothing sticks out to me as wrong here.

I actually didn’t see many other FE7 rebalances on this forum. Maybe cause they aren’t popular here? I did find one that interested me though. Like I said FE7 didn’t grab me much the first time so I don’t think I should comment that heavily on the gameplay experience

I haven’t finished it yet and am doing an Iron man LP of it like I’ve done for his Pokemon hacks, but I think the bigger challenge with a hack like this is that games like Yellow/Crystal/Emerald have clear flaws about them that are worth addressing/attempting to ”perfect” TradeMark such as missing pokemon and lack of move diversity while FE7 is largely pretty solid outside of needed unit balance. TheSmithPlays “perfect” TradeMark FE equivalent is probably most apt in comparing FE1 to FE11 if Shadow Dragon was a NES game without reclassing but still had all the same new classes/promotions. In that regard, I think this hack leans more towards a failure as a “perfect” TradeMark hack as it doesn’t make as many comparative changes like his Pokemon hacks did. It does seem to be harder which is nice, but I’m not an FE7 expert. Giving Snipers a crit bonus and Berserkers desert movement is more in line with the kind of changes you’d really expect in a “perfect” TradeMark hack, but if it was up to me, instead of 1-2 Short bows, I would’ve added in cross bows for Archers/Snipers (the animations for them exist).

I haven’t played FE7 in forever, so I think the hack is fine. It’s nothing to write home about like Sacred Echoes or Vision Quest, it’s not complete shit like Corrupt Theocracy, and is ultimately just a simple re-balance hack. It’s just there and more likely aimed at people in a similar situation to me; likes FE and FE7 but hasn’t played it in a long time and wants something different.

From who? He credited everything he used.

Yeah those people got the recognition when they were credited, that why we credit things. Who else needs recognition?

“Oh, wow, a cool new FE7 rebalance ! Those are rare beasts and the changes are thoroughly explained and make sense, I’ll play it. And oooh, what’s this !? FEUniverse has a thread on it ?! I can’t wait to see the enthusiasm everyone else surely feels as well !”

… …

slowly backs off and closes the thread from a safe distance

You get your ass back here and start screaming incoherently like a responsible adult, sir and/or madam.

I have no horse in this race. I think the next person to make an FE7 rebalance should do a stat deflation hack. The first order of business will be to give Lyn 1 Base Strength and 5 base Spd.

No horse in this race? Great idea! All player mounted units are reclassed to have the same weapons but no mounts :joy:

Kent and sain are armot knights.

I didn’t even care about the ‘PERFECT’ title or the lack of credit. It would have been nice to give credit from the start, sure, since that’s how we always work in this community. I simply disagreed with how they decided to handle balance in this hack. It really didn’t feel like this is how they would have designed FE7 if they were to make it from scratch now. The Wo Dao was the tipping point for me; after that, I just couldn’t get myself to have any interest anymore. I really did start watching it with an open mind, and even changes until then I thought were weird didn’t make me stop until then. I’m honestly not sure what you all were even arguing about generally above, and I admittedly don’t really care to read all that. A lot of people are just being a bit toxic for no reason.

The funniest thing about this argument is that he actually did add the links that I was saying would have been nice to add to the description AFTER it was pointed out to him! Which was a good thing of him to do!

It sounds like you missed the point of what I was saying because, for whatever reason, you’d rather grind your axe and complain about FEU.

Chef’s kiss. No notes.

Honestly, can this rebalanced even be perfect if he didn’t make the reed bros playable, i don’t any new fe7 content if i can’t experience using linus

There’s a reason “credit to the artist” without specifying who you’re talking about doesn’t really fly here. Idrc much to respond to the rest (and there’s credits now, so my problem doesn’t pertain to the hack itself) because a lot of it is difference of opinion, but respecting artists, coders, etc is absolutely important and I’m kind of baffled you’d go to a forum full of them to say crediting is unimportant.

I didn’t realize people like you still existed lol. How do you go through life with so little self-awareness that you write a post like this?

Anyway if you think that people criticizing a hack product is somehow a drama smear campaign you might not know what words mean. Also if you care enough that a youtuber’s rebalance is kinda mid that you’re writing screeds about its design flaws to disprove a clickbait title, then you might want to take a step back and think about how much this actually matters. This entire thread is just obnoxious beyond belief lol

Pictured: Criticism of a hack product

Did you miss the point or are you being dishonest? He did not say there is a CAMPAIGN (which sounds like dishonest framing on your part), he is criticising Crimson immediately assuming from San’s post that Smith did things as bad as Mangs -

and positive elation at the idea of lumping Smith in with Mangs -

…when Smith isn’t the one who was accused

Granted Dawn should have called Crimson out specifically but he is still completely correct on this point - for clarity’s sake here it is again:

Nah don’t worry about it that was a one and done deal, since I already noticed that this thread exploded into a million pieces (and continues on!) I decided on my own terms to leave in a joke in bad taste to see who would bite and single it out without even reading my other posts to figure out that I’m probably just trolling on drama posts that I, again, dislike being a part of.

Even so, I’ll not leave this post on a too big of a sour note and help out in one last way:

Remember the video that SanbaiIce shared on his post? Pat’s response to a scandal involving his friend? Well that’s actually a reupload of the original video who is still on Pat’s channel, but is currently unlisted. The reupload is posted by a user named InfrarainCH2 (originally with the intentions of leaving an uncut version at 10:02 compared to the original’s 9:51) and, thankfully, a comment by the name of SnakieJakie had the link of the original video on Pat’s own channel.

Here is the link to the original video (at the time of this post still up and unlisted).

“I didn’t actually make assumptions and suggest doing something that would smear him, I was trolling”
lol, I guess that is the only way you can salvage the situation

Also in the 0.000001% universe you’re actually trolling, rule 4 is about to have company:
”No flaming, baiting, or bullying. This applies regardless of whether a specific member of the community is targeted.”
