I tried playing the first couple chapters of this hack. Seeing as the story is entirely identical to vanilla so far, there’s not much to get out of that, so I’ve focused more on the gameplay.
And that reveals one fundamental, massive flaw:
Seth.
In Master Quest, Seth is so ludicrously overpowered compared to the rest of your party that there is no reason to not just give him a stack of Javelins and have him solo every map. Granted, that’s somewhat true even in vanilla FE8, but Master Quest makes him far, far stronger.
He starts off with base stats in the 20-30 range, while other playable units have bases comparable to vanilla. He gets easy access to a variety of weapon types, and doesn’t even need them because Javelins kill everything.
Compared to other player units, the enemies actually seem to be strong enough that they might pose a challenge to the likes of Eirika and Garcia, but I didn’t bother trying because Seth just killed everything.
Oh, and 5x has Orson to fulfill the same role. At least Orson doesn’t have 1-2 range, so you need to have him kill mages on Player Phase.
Maybe, and I mean maybe, lategame/endgame will have foes strong enough to stop Seth from killing every last one of them? I haven’t seen those, though, and I’m guessing there will be no shortage of prepromotes to cheese that part too.
Bug Report: After chapter 6 all my stocked iron knives got their durability reduced to 6, it didn’t happen with any other weapon not even mail breakers or serrated knives I had in stock, the set in use is okay.
EDIT: Success causing the bug, it happens when you buy iron knives in the prep screen’s armory and restart the game, happened again at chapter 7 prep after the restart.
EDIT2: It’s a bit cheap to use a warrior in chapter 7 forcing you to deploy Seth.
It happens again in chapter 8, maybe other players didn’t have my hoarding issues but it happens, maybe it’s because the emulator (mGBA) but it seems too small of an error for that since other emulators normally cause freeze and graphical glitches, anyways thanks for listening.
I’m enjoying it so far, but I’m going to second the opinion that Seth is ridiculous in this hack. He was one of the best units in the game in vanilla and this hack makes him even stronger to the point that he is literally untouchable by any of the enemies in the early game. Maybe he falls off later but it still doesnt really matter because the early game is trivial with him around and I dont feel the need to hold him back because if he does fall off I can just use the tower to grind my other units.
There’s the problem, even in Eirika route chapters 10-14 there are enemies even your promoted units at 20 do single digit damage but Seth can clear the map alone, I’m sorry for dissing this hack but the balance is way too off.
I will be straight forward, the hack is not made to be balanced. It is made to be chaotic but something different to have in sacred stones to mix up things.
I wanting to do go for one last project before going on a break from the hacking scene for a little while.
But I want you guys to tell me what I should do since some of you guys are waiting for other things regarding the hack on this page.
So I will make a poll to decide this.
Focus on this project as of the page.
Focus on the new project then come back to this one.
Mainly focus on the new project but use spare time for the posted projects. (I have A LOT of spare time.)
