I’d like to announce a map making contest for the month of May. The contest will be for single chapter hacks/games, and will have a theme of Pride! We selected this theme in honor of pride month being upcoming, but the theme can be interpreted in whatever way you choose.
The contest will be judged by Aarongeddon, Alexis Sara, Mekkah, and BlindCoco, so a mix of romhackers, indie developers and romhack fans!
Rules
Submissions should consist of one SRPG chapter made in an engine of your choosing.
Any assets used should be either owned by you, or used with permission and proper credit. You can use assets from Fire Emblem or other games as well, with credit. Generative AI use will result in disqualification (this goes for both visuals and audio).
Each person should make no more than one submission. You may work on a team, but you should only have worked on one submitted project. Please credit all team members either in the project itself, or in a message alongside your submission.
Submissions can be sent to theactuallizard@gmail.com, dmed to actual_lizard on discord, or private messaged to me here.
Submissions should include any special instructions needed, such as the difficulty to be played.
If the project is not a simple executable or gba patch file, the submission should include detailed instructions on how to launch the game. Submissions must be playable by the judges without requiring paid software.
Bigotry or offensive content (as defined by myself and the judges) may result in a disqualification.
The deadline for submissions is 11:59 on May 31.
Scoring
Each judge will score every game out of 25, and those scores will be combined for an overall score out of 100 for each game.
Scoring will be based on the following factors
Gameplay (10 points)
Presentation, including visuals sound (5 points)
Story (5 points)
Use of the theme of Pride (5 points)
Prizes
There are prizes for the top scoring games as follows
Top Scoring game: $100
Games 2-5: $25 each
Prizes will be paid out via either venmo, or paypal, depending on the winners preference.
Announcement date of winners will depend on how many entries there are, but the goal is to announce a winner by the end of June! I’ll also edit a link into this post that contains the projects once there are submissions, that way we can all try each others games
If you are interested, good luck and I look forward to seeing what you create!
I’m with knabe, this does seem like a pretty inopportune time for a contest. I imagine the people stewing on one chapter ideas would’ve spent them (or attempted to spend them) on SIGURD.
But this contest also isn’t marketed for FEU directly (i saw the lil youtube video )… And… yk… a pride themed contest during pride month is badass. Wishing the best to the contestents
Judges/organizers feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but I get the impression ‘Pride’ as a theme relates to what it means to be proud of yourself and your identity. So yes while there absolutely is an LGBT component it’s more about how LGBT characters relate to their own identities and develop communities and build relationships than specifically just ‘include a gay person’. It is open to degrees of interpretation!
I’ve been wondering if the neurodivergent could also be included in this. I don’t think we have enough like good representation of the ND crowd in our medias. Or at the very least there isn’t substantially deep representation. Then again I guess with stuff like adhd it would be a bit hard to show the harder side of life like executive dysfunction since fantasy worlds are more suited for “quirky” characters and the like.
As somebody who was too busy last month to participate in SIGURD, this feels like an opportune moment for me to a submit a good idea for a map, but I do apologize for everyone else who’s been busy with SIGURD to make a new map. I do hope the maps for this will be just as good.
You can do a pair of Moms proud of their nuerodivergent trans daughter who is fighting to save her non binary partner from an evil emperor and are deployed together to save them against the demons of pride. There is a lot of room for lots of layering different themes of pride together, make a pride pizza with all the pride toppings.
