[Playtest][Lex Talionis] War of the Dragons Chapters 7/?

I have been working on this project for a couple of weeks, my first hack. Though the story had already been in play a long time ago (DnD game with my friends), it has changed drastically. I am very interested in the potential for hacking, so would love to receive any feedback, be it negative or positive.

Summary

500 years ago, the Holy Dragon Empire ruled the whole known world. However, when the Emperor died, a brutal civil war erupted between his five children which almost destroyed everything. Ultimately, after 30 years of war, only the firstborn and his middle sister survived and struck an uneasy peace.

In the year 534 of the Holy Dragon Empire, this power is now a former shell of its glory. Corruption runs rampant, its neighbors plot its destruction, and Emperor Cassius is on the verge of death, to be succeeded by his son, Augustus. Unfortunately, the powers that be have other plans, and soon, a War of Dragons will threaten the continent again.

Features so far
  • So far, 20 playable characters split into two routes. (Expect double those numbers by the end).
  • Personal and Class skills (Done for the first 10 levels approx, still a WIP)
  • Modified swords, bows, lances, and axes to make them more interesting. Several of those with multiple modes.
  • Anima magic is divided into four branches, and each one has it’s own style.
  • Magic similar to 3H
  • Unique classes (Sword Knights, Hunters, Vagabonds, etc) that make for great additions.
  • Tougher enemies overall. Expect to be hit and be hit hard, min damage is always 1. So no uber tanks.
  • Lengthy plot exposition, and interactions between characters.
  • Expect choices every now and then, with multiple choices in the same chapter.

  • Finish working on more varieties of axes, bows, and lances. (DONE)

Change Log

V.02 Update

  • Updated texts so that the pauses would be more frequent in events.
    *Updated Barbed Arrows so they would be more attractive by also dealing a slight penalty to stats.
    *Added costs to items, and a bit more gold gain so that there are more options to be bought in Ch4

V.02.5 Update

  • More varieties of axes.
  • Updates to Ch2 to include enemies with poison weapons to justify the anti-toxin.
  • Added more gold earned after battle to represent looting the corpses.
  • Updates to Ch3 to make it less punishing than it was, even if you had a top-tier team. (Still requires you to plan every move carefully to get all the rewards).

Uploaded V0.2 based on some early feedback.

i tried this project and already encountered a problem.

Characters will say a lot of lines really quickly, but the game skips them all, so I can’t even read them. I’m constantly having to open the log to read the long dialogue. You need to add player input stops after every two lines so the player can actually read your writing. Also, there are a lot of periods after question and exclamation marks that shouldn’t be there.

Also, the prologue can easily be lost. The enemies have a 50% chance to kill the lord in one hit. And if you’re really unlucky and the enemies get the 50% chance to hit Fenris on enemy phase, you’ve pretty much just lost.

Granted, I am playing a version that I downloaded a week ago, so I don’t know if you addressed these.

Hey, thanks a lot of the feedback, I will need to double-check that.

That was something I was told in the first version, so I reviewed it and placed player input stops so it wouldn’t happen.

Same with the prologue which should be still a bit tight, but not as 50/50.

I will review the latest version. Though it is probable that this was the early version before the changes.

@GoudaGrabber I have checked, and there have been a lot of changes from that first version. There are more pauses (though I might need to check the periods). Enemies in the prologue have slightly lower chances now than 50%, an average of 40% if using terrain (except for the boss). However, Fenris is much stronger, so he can easily save you in a pinch if needed (though his weapon ignores weapon triangle).

Still, let me know how it works for you if you try the newer version.

the problem isn’t the hit rate, it’s the fact that they deal more than half Fenris’ hp in one it, and outright kill Augustus in one hit. They do so much damage that if you’re unlucky twice in a row, you’ll lose. In fact, that happened in Chapter 1, Fenris got hit by an axe user, got left at 1 hp, because it did 20 damage, then he got hit by a 40% and died. There’s just way too much damage and too many units for how weak and fragile everyone is.

Hi @GoudaGrabber just to be sure, have you played the updated version?, because even with how low HP Augustus has, he should no longer die in 1 hit (that was changed twice by removing a trait that gave them extra bonus and by balancing stats). Fenris does have low HP, but compensates with a lot of damage and crit. (He is, after Augustus, one of the most fragile units though).

Augustus’s branch does have a harder start, in which most of the time they are outnumbered, however, there are more tools at your disposal and their growths are higher in general. So much that by the end of the tutorial, even Augustus as a trainee should be able to handle several enemies at the same time.

V.07 Update

And probably the last update of the year outside of minor things. I believe December will be a very busy month for me, so at most will implement some minor changes, and adding music to some scenes.
