100 more? Nah that’s too low, let’s aim for 1000!
In all seriousness, glad to see people like this topic,
Have some splices.
With that out of the way, I have been told I have a particular way of splicing and some people wanted to know my splicing process so there you go
This is not a tutorial? I don’t know, sry for bad english
Programs used: MS Paint and Usenti
Pros: It works
Cons: ill suited for commissions, you don’t know what you’re going to get,
Messy method
So the first step is to create an empty canvas on MS Paint, that’s the canvas where you will be making your splices.
It helps you keep your WIPs somewhere and it is easier to just have a canvas rather than several files, plus it allows you to make a ton of WIPs and so you can try so many different things
so then you take a portrait you want to splice with.
I recommend the Vanilla ones but you can use F2E portraits (as long as you credit them)
I think Bandits and ennemies portraits are easier to splice so that’s what I took
from then on, you want to try stuff, splice whatever you want, let your imagination run free
Ms paint has a tool that allow you to be precise with the parts you want to use
But what’s important here is to make a character that’s different from the vanilla one, a genuine original character so you’re going to change several aspect of your portraits by splicing different things
Here I spliced FE7 Erik Eyes and there’s already a change
So what happen when I do more small changes?
Boom new guy who dis?
-
The hair was taken from Lowen and another FE7 Bandit, What matter here is the shape of the haircut rather than the consistency between the differents hairs
-
The jaw and the mouth were taken from Oswin, it’s crazy the number of things you can do by just changing the jaw
-
Eyebrows, like the eyes can really change the expression of someone, here you can see I only changed one eyebrow, which is a mistake that I will fix later
On the importance of the eyes and eyebrows
There’s also the “same-face syndrome” that exist in differents mangas, which is a lot related to the eyes, all that to say that If you manage to change the eyes, it is easier to call it an oc
I also gave him a scar because why not?
the body is temporary and not mandatory at this point, just wanted to see what I could do with this portrait
Time to usenti
Usenti is good for colour management, especially when using that method, because you end up with a lot of colours
Here we’re gonna make the splice have only 3 colours for the hair and 5 colours for the skin, 1 colour for the outline
How to properly reduce colours in Usenti
Since the norm is 16 colours for the portraits, we need to reduce the number of colours,
For that usenti has a tool called requantize
With it you can choose the limit of colours on usenti, and the program will reduce the number of colours by itself.
It’s great! But it can be a problem since Usenti doesn’t know with 100% accuracy which colours you want to keep.
So what you want to do, is to do it the manual way by taking similar colours and giving them the same value:
Then by using requantize BUT NOT ENTERING ANY VALUE (just pressing ok) the number of colours on the right will refresh, showing only the colours remaining.
Which bring us to this
it’s ok? but definitively not enough
So we shade it, both the skin and the hair.
To each their own way of shading
(I swear it will improve)
Which bring us to the body.
it’s basically the same process,
Splicing till it work
regular copy paste for the frames with a bit of custom work and there you go.
I took a rather simple splice for this explanation but WIPs can get way messier like this
And it's important to keep WIPs
Because a WIP can make 2 SPLICES or more
Remember you can always ask for feedback on the FEU Discord
and if you want a proper spriting tutorial I recommend this one by BuskHusker,
If you any questions regarding the splices feel free to ask them.
