Introducing myself...nearly a decade later

There’s that feeling in life where you end up convincing yourself that you are a lurker within FEUniverse, what I didn’t account for was that during my spring cleaning of older accounts and all, I end up finding this crusty ass account that hasn’t been touched in nearly a decade so you end up being like “Wait, I had an account!?” and as such, the revelation ends up being that yes, you are the fire emblem user within the FEUniverse sphere, and as a result, I may as well introduce myself.

Hi, first of all, I have no idea where the nickname came from, at the time I was trying to find ways to get a copy of SRPG Studio (back when it wasn’t translated) because I was somewhat of a collector of old proprietary Japanese game engines for some reason (lol I never ended up using the thing), I am guessing the nick just came on a spur of the moment thing, so I ended up using Kris for the profile pic, since that fit, somehow.

I discovered FE properly through whoisthisgit videos back around 2012/2013-ish, since then, I’ve been on and off with the series. I beat some of them, and I read the plot summaries of some of them due to either laziness or the ‘goddamn this looks way too slow to beat’ FE4 syndrome I had.

I only beat one hack which is FE8 Reforged and at some point I am planning to beat Sacred Echoes (both extremely well done hacks), I have heard tales of TLP but I never really bothered, sounds like edgy fun from what some people have said.

FE I enjoyed the most is Sacred Stones through Reforged, and my least favorite of the FEs is 3H by a country mile.

So…yeah, hi there. (I am sorry if you try to offer me bombs, Kris absurd plot-armor makes it so that the bombs end up being reflected back :(((, nuthing I can do about it)

First, welcome! Hope you still enjoy your stay after 9 years.

Second, whoisthisgit? Mentioned in 2026? Let’s go! I also watched a lot of their videos back when I was younger, I believe it was the first time I heard of Fire Emblem as well lol.

This one specifically is still one of their classic FE videos that I always come back to watch:

A belated introduction begets a belated welcome bomb! You can use it to uncover secrets, but be careful!

Welcome AvatarofMarth hope you enjoy your time here.
Warning there are pyromanics here under any circumstane, Do not accept lit bombs and try to hold it last person went to the moon and had to be rescued by me via the rescue staff

Can’t believe it’s going to be 10 years since 2017. I wonder how my life would’ve been if I discovered this site around 2018 when I was a teenager.

Anyways, enough rambling. Hi there AvatarofMarth. It’s great that you introduced yourself. Always better late than never.

Hey!

@CrimsonFox One of my favorite videos of his is the one among the most powerful characters in gaming, the one that stars Ash the Vandelier from Vandal Hearts, imo one of the most busted characters in all of gaming, it’s a classic and I recommend it (Vandal Hearts is also really good too)

@Starshadow_Melody The belated welcome bomb has expired out of old age after being shelved for so long and it can no longer accomplish its main task :((, keep it, sell the materials if you find an use for them.

@Aswink Thanks! Have seen only expired and no longer functioning bombs so it’s all good.

@AlemOwl So I am going to give you a bit of my recollection of how FEUniverse was at the time, which isn’t a lot from me but what I recall was: It wasn’t as active as it is today, not to say it didn’t have any posts but at the time, romhacking was significantly more challenging because the community was still deciding on what framework or method to use to publish either hacks or fangames (There might have been a decomp but it was either way too early or not advanced enough to move forward). I made an account here as I mentioned to look for SRPG Studio, one of the “potential engines that might have taken over” since Shouzou Kaga was using it in one of his indie projects. I didn’t stick around for long because my interests at the time jumped from one place to another, and I quickly forgot about this account until I managed to save it. LT wasn’t a thing, Tactile didn’t existed, SRPG Studio wasn’t translated and all other options relied on crude hacks and inaccurate emulators (mGBA existed but it was in a much rougher and incomplete state, and your only other option was No$GBA for the most part)

I think the topic of conversations back then were generally more on what the current FE games were doing like since Awakening and Fates did good numbers on sales. But don’t quote me on this, since, as mentioned, I am only posting now :PP

Hi. I joined in 2018 as a teenager. And as you can see, I still haven’t produced a hack to this day.

To piggyback off of what @AvatarofMarth has said, (Also, hello!) the community was indeed very different back in those 201x years. I joined at the end of 2018 (November?) and FEB had been out for some 9 months iirc. It was essentially the birth of the community you see today.

That said, romhacking used to be so arduous that people were indeed looking for just about any alternative they could find, be it tactile, fexna, or srpg studio. I got lucky in that I didn’t google search “SRPG game maker” and “Fire Emblem Maker” until after the release of FEB.

Even then, it still took a few good years for people to get comfortable with the tool and start pumping out hacks like you see today. I think those early experiences with this site/community as well as my initial difficulties with picking up romhacking (did not come naturally to me at all) are a big part of what have delayed me in actually creating my project ideas.

Hey hey!

To add on a bit more information from what you said. Community was primarily gathered within the Discord server, because the forums barely had any activity due to them being in that era of “Discord is awesome, let’s ditch or barely post in forums”, the irony in all of this is that forums are making something of a resurgence while Discord is nowadays trapped in a myriad of controversies after controversies, but people were desperate to move on from IRC or custom chat clients and so the forums only had sporadic activity until the boom happened when the tools matured. (Ancient history only some people remember, at the time SerenesForest (the other notable FE-focused forums didn’t always have Discord, they had a system where you needed to log in to your account, and then hop in on the chatbox which had a limit of 20 active members, it was like IRC except you could see posts from previous days and also had profile pics, this was an admittedly awkward system because whenever a new FE game or such came out, the chat would be full and thus you would be unable to join and post as the 20-member limit locked you out, ahh, the memories~)
