I’ve got things generally working after a lot of work, but before I release it on my coding thread, I’m looking for suggestions for achievements and rewards to use for testing and the fe8 self randomizer.
Achievement example:
Pacifist: Complete a chapter without killing anyone.
New game+ example:
After completing the first floor of Valni tower, you can claim a red gem from the preparations menu at any time, even on new game.
Achievements can optionally have a NG+ reward, or they can be entirely separate.
I’m not super interested in a lengthy discussion on whether NG+ rewards are a good idea or are balanced or not, I’m just looking for some general ideas. Thanks!
Do they have to be generic? Or can they be Sacred Stones related?
Some achievements ideas:
Complete a chapter in one turn. (“Too long: didn’t play” or something?)
Complete the game in less than 200 turns or smt like that (“Speedrun”? Could be like Hollow Knight and divide into Speedrun I and II)
Defeat x with y (defeat Gheb with Amelia I find funny. Name could be something like David and Ghebliath)
Defeat Lyon in one round of combat / defeat Fomorttis in one turn (can you defeat Fomortiis in one round? Maybe leave that one as NG+ only) (“I thought you were stronger” if you want to have references in your achievement names)
Complete Phantom Ship without deploying mounted units (No horsing around!)
Level up a unit from level 1 all the way to 20/20 (“Favoritism”?)
Promote Ewan twice in the normal campaign without entering the Tower of Valni.
Get all three super trainees in the normal campaign without entering the Tower of Valni (Child Death Squad or something like that) (obviously NG+ only)
As for rewards, the emblem weapons could be a nice reward to get in NG+ for beating the Tower.
Legit some of those are funny achievements. Well shit, Let’s break and enter, Christopher Columbus junior and Wait, staves are cool??? are the funniest.
Oooooh, okay then. that’s actually interesting to see on Fe8 :o
Kinda sounds like fun ngl but prefect to get NG+ stuff when completing it for the first time.
In my conceptualization of NG+, many rewards can be picked up without starting a new game. But you can get them much earlier than you would normally on subsequent playthroughs
I wonder if one of the rewards for NG+ could be getting new units, or if it’s possible to start with all the units you got in the game. IIRC the Bound Destiny trilogy had something like this, although I haven’t checked yet to see if this was possible within FE Builder, or if it was most likely done in Buildfiles. I really have to do some coding if I want to do stuff like this lol.
I like the idea of achievements that proc if something particularly unlucky/bad happens. It’ll end your run of the map, but it wasn’t a complete waste of time because you got a small bonus.
The Lottery: Get crit with a 1% chance. Gives Goddess Icon.
Aren’t you forgetting someone?: Clear Chapter 13 Eirika Mode in 4 turns or less. Gives Elysian Whip
No Honor: Have a lockpick stolen by an enemy thief. Gives Lockpick.
Personally, I’ve been trying to think of a “Special Mode” where certain units get swapped around and the story slightly differs! It’s a bit like Hector Hard mode and I think that some aspects could work for new game+. Thing is though that most aspects of the Special Mode I have in mind for The Prophecy of Flames, are things like characters being shuffled a bit and switching classes. But maybe characters could get bonus stats, extra equipment and treasure chests could yield better loot? One thing I do consider for said Special Mode, are characters that can only be recruited in that mode. So New Game+ giving you other characters you can recruit could be interesting.
As for achievements:
Whilst FE8 doesn’t have Gaiden conditions, an achievement pop up for meeting Gaiden requirements could be neat as it takes away the mystery of having unlocked them or not at the end of chapter.
Also, I feel like niché things like pulling off a triangle attack or something could make for a neat achievement.
Yes please. This would finally make my two braincells stop freaking out every time there’s a Gaiden. Plus, if you didn’t know about the Gaiden, like on a first playthrough or something, getting that pop-up mid-map is something really exciting to look forward to.
Many gaiden requirements are turn based or could be lost mid chapter, so I don’t think this works well unfortunately. If it needs to be cleared within 15 turns, I could display that on the first turn, but that feels more like a goal window objective. Or say I displayed an achievement after Nino talks to Jaffar in battle before dawn, but then Ursula kills off one of them with bolting the next turn. It’d probably make more sense to display a message for failing the requirements most of the time, though that just feels bad to see.
